I believe I first came across this song from Irish band Sweeney's Men who do a fine version of this tale. I became obsessed with this song after researching the story...
In times gone by, when animals were worshipped on hill tops, they sang this ballad of this wonderful ram. Black-faced guisers would do the rounds of Midland and S.Yorkshire villages in Midwinter, one adorning a sheepskin and would sing outsode people's houses bringing good luck. The tup (sheep) had the power to grant or withold this good luck for the coming year.
The song has its roots many centuries ago and was first documented in the 1700s. It's hard to say where and when it originated but I believe it to be from the time of the guising. As belief in folklore in England began to subdue, so did this custom but many processions across the Midlands will still have some tup in tow.
Though the song is far from its self by date. It is still sung from primary schools in Derbyshire to more boisterous and lawdy versions on the terraces or equally uncouth versions by soldiers. In 1855, the First Regiment of Derbyshire Militia adopted a ram as their mascot and the ballad as their regimental song, a tradition that continued into the 95th Derbyshire Regiment, and subsequently the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment, and Mercian Regiment, through regimental amalgamations.
The song travelled the world to Australia and USA. Even George Washington was reputed to sing this song, such was the immense popularity of the tale.
In Derby there are several monuments to the ram and even the professional football team Derby county sport the ram as the emblem and mascot. The ram is synonymous with Derby.
The Derby Ram has spawned several noteable versions, Dalby Ram (an Australian version) The Ram of Derbish Town and The Yorkshire Tup.
I decided the record this song on my latest album 'From Hull and Halifax and Hell...' recorded live in the Faroe Islands. Musical instruments didn't arrive on the islands until the early 20th century and I reckon this is the first time Northern English traditional folk song has been recorded here.
A.L. Lloyd, the indefatigable and famed folk song collector spoke of this song ''A song as tough and as indestructible as the hoary old tup that it celebrates. When the beer has a good head, the potent old Derby Ram is never far away. Some say The Derby Ram is related to the Greek god Pan. Some say that he represents the Devil himself.''
