Another thing I like is that since there isn't a second version and is set in the past, it's much harder to contradict anything said. Overall this Pokedex was great. It's nice to finally here entries that feel like they come from a person with their own added flavor and experiences. Some of my favourites are ones that get more personal to Laventon like Roselia's thorns being a call to a duel in his homeland, him relating to Clefable's homesickness, Gardevoir's dress being remiscent of "ladies of nobility" and him sniffing Shaymin's flower.

I hadn't thought about the lack of version-to-version contradiction with this game. Great point!

The addition of personal anecdotes and opinions didn't just give the Pokedex a really fresh style It also says to really humanize laventon especially ones like the Clefairy entry. I'd love to see this style used more in the future, and used to give other professors a bit more depth

Absolutely! You almost learn more about Laventon through the Pokédex than you do directly from him, haha.

My favorite entries are the ones for the Porygon line, where Laventon fully admits he has no idea what the hell these things are.

Yes! Laventon saying that PorygonZ's strangeness has been greatly magnified, and that “This worries me” is one of my favourite bits in the Pokédex.

You know what would have been really fun and interesting? If instead of just joining the Survey Corps and collecting and researching Pokemon, you got to choose what corps you wanted to join, and each corps would have different missions and objectives for you to complete. The story would still be the same roughly, you'd still have to fight the nobles in order to close the space-time rift, but the missions and quests that you undertake would depend on which corps you joined or are best suited for.
    Examples:
    1. Survey Corps - Catch and research Pokemon. (Obviously)
    2. Security Corps - Protect the village or even fight certain Pokemon spotted near the village. You would also help in protecting other small settlements as well. Battling and combat would be a huge focus, unlike the Survey Corps which is more focused on research and documentation.
    3. Medical Corps - Most missions would involve learning about healing items and helping either injured Pokemon or people. Joining this corps would also involve learning how to cook to keep the villagers fed. As people become closer and more accepting of Pokemon, maybe one major mission could even see you helping Pesselle, the leader of the Medical Corps, establish the first official Pokemon center in Hisui. (This one requires a little imagination.) ^^'
    4. Supply Corps - Learn about and gather materials for the village and other settlements. Maybe there is even a separate "Dex" of sorts of materials that you have to gather and document. Similar to the Curry Dex from SWSH. You don't just learn about animals in the wild after all. Learning about different plants and terrain is also vital to learning about the wild in general.
    5. Agriculture Corps - Growing crops for the village and other settlements, and learning about the different crops that you can grow and their effects. Missions would also involve finding and taming specific Pokemon to help with the gardening and cultivation much like in the final game.
    6. Construction Corps - Missions would involve expanding the village and catching certain Pokemon to assist.
This would give the game way more expansion and replay value since you could start a new playthrough and explore a different corps. If the game was multiplayer, players could even explore together and help each other complete missions. Players could even benefit together by helping each other. It would be kind of an interesting way of tieing into the message found in the Solaceon ruins: Friendship: All lives touch other lives to create something anew and alive.
Of course, the only major thing that I would change in the story is Arceus sending you back in time since the goal was for you to collect all Pokemon (Though you could keep it, just have Arceus give you a different purpose such as quelling the nobles or closing the rift). Personally, I would have preferred if the player was from the past instead, but hey.
Sorry for the long essay, but those are my rough ideas. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. :)

I can agree that would be cool. But it would also be, essentially, six different games in one.
To be honest, I don't really understand the appeal of the idea of different progress streams. I could maybe see a game where you have a lot of different ways to accomplish a given objective, but what you describe, with completely different sets of objectives, just doesn't sound feasible to me. Instead, I would encourage The Pokémon Company to produce more spin-off games along the lines of Ranger, where collecting and battling Pokémon are not your objectives.

Love the concepts but some of the corps seem to overlap a little.
I think catching and battling are core elements of a Pokémon game and then the medical corps could involve bridging the gap between people and Pokémon. This way you have three unique corps that all represent different parts of the Pokémon universe

I’ll be honest, I forgot Crobat had feet. Is it just me, or are they harder to notice in a 3D model than a 2D drawing?

I don't know, man, I've known and remembered that Crobat does have feet since Gen 2 xD But you do pretty much have to see Crobat from behind for the feet to be noticeable.

That's a great question. I haven't looked up JP dex entries for this game, but as far as I know about previous games, they tend to be translated pretty close.

This is how the pokedex of future games should be. Not only in the information it provides, but also in how the entries are made:
    - Different missions when catching the Pokemon.
    - How many species were caught.
    - When should they be captured.
I hope that SV have this system for the dex, being open world increase the chances that we have like this. I just want it to happen.

A bit of flowery language isn’t bad as long as you realise that’s all it is. Flowery descriptions to help illustrate how strong a creature is.

As long as you realize that's all it is, yes. And that's exactly my point. A lot of people don't realize it. I included Rhyhorn specifically because I saw a fellow creator treating it as fact in their own Pokédex review.

While its true that many of the entries for Hisui specific Pokemon have incorrect entries started by Laventon and then carried on through more modern Pokedexes, it's also likely that the problem existed even before his Pokedex, since it's pretty strange that the Survey Corps (and really Galaxy Team as a whole) still don't have a lot of knowledge on Pokemon that also exist in regions that have presumably already been explored.
And I think that brings up an interesting implication for the modern Pokemon world too (though I think that Legends at least implies it in canon?) That the acceptance of Pokemon into human lifestyle is less about knowing more about Pokemon than in years past, but more so about the ease of which they can be controlled and befriended through technology like Pokeballs. Maybe I'd even go so far as to say that funding in the Pokemon world is poured more heavily into developing that tech rather than actually learning about the Pokemon.

  • @castform7

Is it weird that I thought the Survey Corps had more than 4 members. Maybe I missed something cause I just thought they were the smallest group and that since no one could do the job to the fullest, it was up to me. In hindsight, I probably should've noticed that literally no one has a Survey Corps uniform other than Akari/Rei and the player.

Seriously though, great video (as always). And I agree that hyperbole and metaphor is okay here and there, and it's interesting that these exaggerations may have influenced future 'dexes. They (GF) must have put a lot of thought and careful consideration into writing this one - bravo! 👍

7:28 I mean, can you blame them? Remember, the pokemon world is one in which God is observable and catchable. pokemon are creatures that defy real world science, so it would make sense that pokemon world scientists are more likely to accept fantastical explanations for phenomena

@@UmbreonLibris well excluding the machamp and vaporeon ones I'd agree. It's has been shown (in pokken I believe) that machamp can punch 1000 times in only a moment. And the eevee evolutions are the quintessential pokemon of that type. So I find it perfectly possible for vaporeon could be similar to water. Sometimes fantasy science doesn't make sense using real world logic.

There's this multi lingual fisherman on Route 226 that I can remember speaking French and German
and if that's anything to go off of I now expect a
    German region
    Italian one
    and Indian
    We got French with Kalos
and Spanish with this new Iberia one
although I wish that the spanish one would be based more off of the Spanish Empire
    more clear cut biome diversity

    • @Ditidos
      @Ditidos 2 роки тому

The iberian peninsula does have a lot of biomes, though. Rainforests, deserts, marshes, mountains and arid plains to name a few. There isn't really an area for cold Pokémon (except maybe the mountains that form a frontier with France, albeit they could make some mountains taller) but hey, the sandstorm climate normally makes more sense there than in Galar, I think (it is more of a mudstorm than a proper sandstorm and it's not frecuent at all, but it can happen sometimes if there are strong enough winds coming from the south).

7:18 Peer review: We don't know how many fits per second those are, this is meaningless >.>
7:32 Taking all of those accounts as fact leads to a much weirder world lol.
Just like all of those pokemon that are said to turn alive from lifeless matter implies that there's some weird magical life force on the environment.

    • @UmbreonLibris
      @UmbreonLibris  2 роки тому

I think there _is_ some life force in the environment-basically what aura/infinity energy/dynamax energy/etc etc are. But that's inconsistent with being able to breed those animated Pokémon with any other, and being able to hatch them from eggs.
Regarding Machamp, the full quote is "In but a blink, this valiant Pokémon can overwhelm its foes with more than 1,000 blows from its fists." A blink isn't a standard measure of time, but I don't think any amount of time it might take to deliver 250 punches per fist would be reasonably called a blink.

    • @didack1419
      @didack1419 2 роки тому +1

@@UmbreonLibris _That's inconsistent with being able to breed those animated Pokémon with any other, and being ableto hatch them from eggs._
At least each of them would not stand in an evolutionary relationship with the rest of the pokémon. Each of them would be an independent tree as a species. Weird concept because they would still breed with other pokemon, but the species keeps the same as the rest of pokemon.
It's not like egg-groups stand in evolutionary relationships like clades either, so it's not an issue some animated pokemon don't share egg-groups with other animated ones.
So, if you give up evolutionary relationships and any form of physical reproduction, they could just reproduce with each other, I guess.
The big problem is those references to DNA, which they could not literally be about deoxyribonucleic acid.
