I was an Aeronautical engineering student at Illinois in 1971. One of my professors spent part of a lecture period "proving to us why the Henry Cramer prize would NEVER be won... we all believed him...ha... so much for science never being wrong. What he did not know or even imagine was that in 6 short years there would be available a very lightweight, very strong material that would allow for a huge wingspan at only 70 lbs ! Take what you hear with a grain of salt... even if a renowned professor is saying it.

And now we have carbon nanotubes and graphene. There's a real chance of getting the whole thing down to the 20-30lb range.

When came carbon fibere availabe and when afordabel for CFK-aplications for instance in planes?
Was it already in the seventies ore rather in the 80ties?
Burt Rutan impmemented CFK in this pusher turboprop busines plane roughly in the 80ties so far I know.
      Thanks for sharing your experience!

Actually all those materials were available in 1971. However hang gliding technology was just beginning. The combination of available materials and hang gliding design and flight experience put it all together. I actually went out to Shafter, Ca. and saw the Gossamer Condor fly.

      @@AtlasReburdened 🔴 What Is Islam?
🔴 Islam is not just another religion.
🔵 It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham.
🔴 Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God.
🔵 It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone.

This was such a monumental achievement to me growing up in the 70's, years later I was able to meet him when he spoke at our local community college. He said the design was created during a road trip behind the wheel of his station wagon, and borne out of a need for funds that the Kremer Prize would provide. Truly a talented, brilliant man.

this is probably one of humans greatest dreams being able to fly using their own muscles if given the chance in future I would certainty try it as would most people. people throughout human history from ancient greece have wanted to do this now it has finally come true

I have a Gossamer Condor T-shirt sent to me by Dr. Mastropaolo, the physiologist who did the physical trainer of Paul Allen to get his power output up to where it needed to be to keep this thing going long enough.

I knew Mr Mc Cready when he was president of the I.H.P.V.A in the mid 80s to the mid 90s. A great man with a wonderful imagination. I was a builder and racer of My own creations at that time. Although My later vehicles never were as good, Simple Cycle 1 was held up by him (minus the bodyshell), as, "a perfect example of doing more with less!", during the 1990 I.H.P.S.C. in Portland OR.. I came in 5th place in the practical vehicle compition, that year.

Да, чуть облегчить самолёт добавлением гелия можно было, может быть он летел бы быстрее или меньше пришлось бы прикладывать сускульных усилий для полёта, уменьшить размеры самолёта.

Makes me sad to see the potential of a human mind that can create something as beautiful as a flying machine powered by the sun soaring through the sky, in balance with nature and the human spirit and then go on to create the switchblade missile, a killing machine that stalks it's victim from the sky, locking on to it's prey, and then unleashing a barrage of razor like projectiles with surgical precision evisserating it's sole target and leaving behind chunks of shredded fleash and mentally scarred witness to it's hateful carnage and twisted ideology.

Is the ground pushing him into the air? No? I didn't think so. Thus, it is fully human powered flight. The fact that it's easier near the ground is irrelevant. It's also easier with an airplane than with cardboard wings and duct tape. So what? Nothing to do with it being human powered or not.

they look too weak for bad weather conditions and too big. maybe they could make them smaller if they had two propellers and a faster gear ratio so you can pedal slow but still get the speed thatsneeded for lift. think a hand glider shape would work. wish i had the time and space to build one

Yahoo just posted an article giving credit to "Human-powered flight stays airborne
History is made after a grad student at the University of Toronto sustains altitude and airspeed for 19.3 seconds while traveling about 145 yards at an average speed of 16 mph.
September 24, 2010|By Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times"...needless to say this article is grossly erroneous, per the above video data on the Gossamer Condor and Albatross flightsof the late 1970s.

Isn't this flight using ground effect so it's not really proper human powered flight. You got to get above where ground effect has any influence to say human powered flight is a success. Does the cyclist not have enough power to climb higher

    • @richardhill2643
      @richardhill2643 6 років тому

No, the high wing and low flight speeds generates no ground effect. The flight is achieved through the thrust generated from the prop by the power of the pilot's legs. Does not need to fly higher, but yes, it would take more energy from the pilot to get it to climb higher.
