jesus theres some rude people in the comments. this guy programmed this in 6502 Assembly, on his own. its quite an achievment. Everyones acting like this was an official port. It was a guys hobby ffs
Agreed. Amateurish, maybe, but it's just the guy's hobby. Kudos for creating a working character tile and scrolling system, even if this is on the slow side. Actually, this is almost exactly like Sonic the Hedgehog, only with a little more realism. Less Sonic and more Hedgehog ;-)
@@rikuruohomaki3230 I think people saw 'mayhem in monsterland' for the C64 and thought this would be finally an 'official port' reskinning it to the actual theme. Mayhem in monsterland actually has the look and feel of sonic the hedgehog for the c64. Once you see the footage of that, you'll see why a lot of die hards are not all that impressed. If he called it something else it would be very impressive. Afterall, there aren't enough good platformers for the c64.
Bit iffy, but not bad for two weeks' hobbyist work. With a bit more development this could actually come good, given that the C64 isn't far off the NES or SMS in terms of power (though slightly less graphically rich).
I cant believe he got to have the bg way over the actual map but didn't think of making it have parallax with some interrupts, it would've looked so cool
Commodore Executive: Let's make a Sonic game on the C64, but take away everything that makes Sonic good! Jack Tramiel: I love it! Here's $5 for the budget!
Shame this hasn't been developed further. I'm currently playing Adventures of Tronic, which is essentially a sidescrolling shooter but with a pretty good looking Sonic sprite and sonic looking background. If the sprites from Tronic could be added to the platform engine of this game and developed, I think we could have a pretty solid Sonic port for the C64, along the lines of Zeropaige's Super Mario Bros port, which was almost perfect.
@@olds86307 Now the Sonic conversion has finally come to the C64, our prayers have ben answered. I played the nuts out of that, and the Mario conversion. Just shows what the C64 can do with some clever programming :)
As a proof of concept, it seems like the coder wanted to prove that Sonic wouldn't work on C64. Then again, there's Mayhem in Monsterland, to prove that, technically, it could totally work. And there are versions on Master System and Gamegear, to prove that a slightly downgraded Sonic is totally doable on an 8-bit system.
It's 100% feasible. Sam's Journey, which came out last year exclusively for C64, has far better graphics than both SMB 3 for NES and Sonic for Master System. It all comes down to the skill and passion of the coder and pixel artist. C64 has (rudimentary) hardware accelerated screen scrolling, so fast scrolling is definitely not beyond it's capabilities. I've found a few youtube videos of people who created C64 chiptune versions of the Sonic music too. It's really good
@@jeffthecoder I couldn't agree with you more. Having seen video of Sam's Journey, even following it's progress, I am very impressed by it. I used to code a little when I was a kid, not that I was particularly good at it. But knowing at least something of the inner workings of VIC, the C-64's graphic processor, I am amazed by the things people are able to do these days, like making extra colors to the C-64 palette by blinking two colors, or various creative ways people create impressive parallax scrolling effects on the C64, or various sprite multiplier routines etc. Sam's Journey is pretty colorful and has a great, smooth, multi-directional scrolling routine. And the whole game looks very polished.
Does "awful" even come close to doing this justice? Mayhem proved that a Sonic type game on C64 would be possible... this is just a horrible, ugly mess. One for the scrapheap!
My apologies but this looks and sounds horrifying. Look at what they did with Creatures and that was two brothers having a laugh in the 90s. Then look at this. No-one's laughing.
@97channel if i'd been drinking milk, it would have come out of my nose just now.. also, this looks and sounds terrible.. i hope it didn't take long :P

11 years later we have a true port
"Mom, we can buy Sonic The Hedgehog?"
"No, we have Sonic at home"
Sonic at home:
This is amazing and so realistic I can almost feel the pixels
At least here Sonic moves slowly like a true hedgehog :P
GOTTA GO SLOW!
Congratulations, great work
Come on, it's a try. Good job mate.
Still better than Fortnite and OXO (1952).
I call this: "special sonic"
The sonic on the title screen made my sides hurt lmao
Those weren't chili dogs
"I WANT SONIC"
"WE GOT SONIC AT HOME"
Sonic at home...
The butchered music was absolutely HILARIOUS. XD

Wow... After seeing this, Sonic 06 is the best game in the world!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This just screams 'a Tiertex conversion'
No one knew what happened to Sonic on the C64 after this point.
Edit: someone got it to work.
could be a usgold - tiertex conversion in 90s
This is a work in progress port of Sonic for the Comidore 64 and there will be the sequel coming soon.
U mean the actual sonic port
Sonic movie beta
Thanks for a laugh
THE TITLE SCREEN LOOKS LIKE THE OLD SONIC MOVIE

this is so good that youtube thinks its sonic 06

This is like a good quality version of a sonic the hedgehog game on the Atari 2600, it's pretty good.
This isn’t the Atari 2600, this is on the Commodore 64
Sega: Sonic the Hedgehog
C64: szouch thes hedgjehdzespig
Now Sega should be worried.
0:13 seconds in and I'm laughing. That is the most demented sonic I have EVER seen. Hahah love it!

Somic the Hedgehog
Not gonna lie, if I'd have seen this game when I was a kid I would have loved it.
This is better than on the Genesis
Blast Processing...Yeah
Blast my ass
An attempt was made.
Sonic looks like an actual hedgehog in this one. 10/10 for realism
MAN that looks like a good game.
we got something better already!
lmao dude made the "gotta go fast" stroke drawing meme into a game

in the title screen...it looks like Sonic is holding a cigarette!
Sonic games need physics, that's what sets them apart from other platformers.
Idk why but i'm a little bit scared of this.
Sonic if US Gold ported it back in the day!
Oh man, it's so beautiful
still better than 3d sonic games

Funny how you said this two years ago, because a near perfect port of the 8-bit Sonic 1 came some weeks ago
Very cool! Robin from 8bit show and tell just did a video about using border graphics, give that a watch, you'd probably enjoy it!

Sonic 1 on the C64 but only limited to 64KB and wasn’t made too well at the time.

So sad to see that his arthritis is now at a very advanced stage. :-(
ohoho, how the turn tables.............
I suppose this is a pre alpha demo of this game no? Because the music is really rotten, the game is too sluggish, No enemies / collectibles etc etc...
and you thought sonic gba was bad
Wow, incredible what's possible on this platform.

Its no Mayhem in Monsterland... thats for sure...
Ok, Nice attempt with assembly Language
If it is all done in assambly languange thrn this is not bad, despites the music is off melody and things being zoomed out.
