WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Your UA-cam name seems very familiar I think you and I have exchanged comments before. Without going on an extensive search would you mind giving a brief explanation of your take?
They're wilfully ignorant when they ignore the scientific evidence for their beliefs,
ME: If I am understanding what you are saying correctly, you are conveying scientific evidence that goes against what they believe, is this correct?
and yes the evidence is out there for any evolution denier to examine.
Google defines evolution this way:
1. the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.
2. the gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form.
An example under the 2nd defining term there wasn't one under the first.

The human body, that shares 98% genetic commonality with the chimpanzee.
The human body with toes and jaws that make it look as if an ancestor was common with other apes.
The human
body with teeth and eyes and joints that go bad, so that we're privileged to live in a time when the tribe can support the weak, infirm or slow.
The human body that has 40% infant and child morality rate, and 20% maternal mortality without modern medical science. That's just the ones that get born: Fully 40% of fertilized eggs don't result in a live birth.
These are my favorite type of callers. Dumb and proud.
They make for entertaining calls on the show, but they ruin life in general.

@Guitarzen I don't think genetics are an exclusive factor on them having independent thought. Someone that has been indoctrinated can be made to reevaluate their position, and rehabilitated, so to speak. Insults are not the way of doing this, by the way.

This is like whack a mole. Callers phone in and Matt smacks them down with logic. Even though Matt has never lost an argument it doesn't matter people believe what they want to believe.
I think he has lost an argument. He has been speaking of when he was flat out wrong on his solution to the is ought problem, and was corrected, he lost that argument. At least to a degree. The difference between he and most is rather than doubling down he was like "oh, I was wrong," and didn't continue to push his wrong idea.
What gets me is when someone calls in, says they have been listening to the show for a while, and then proceeds to regurgitate the same tired arguments he has addressed hundreds of times.

Evolution doesn't say that new anatomy can be created. In fact it says the exact opposite. Everything that exists is a modification of something that came before. There is no new anatomy. Just changes to existing anatomy that can shift somethings function.

Sometimes I get so annoyed by the lack of 'knowledge' in these discussions. Penguins evolved in tropical climates. They can still be found in warm places all over the southern hemisphere. Antarctica didn't become an ice desert till after the little guys were firmly established.
Penguins have evolved to survive in cold climates, THAT'S the point. They exist now in that climate and are able to do so because of evolution.

@@Flammiedrum His point was they were designed for the cold which is false. The base shape of a penguin is neither designed or evolved for the antarctic, it's a swimming predator. The majority of penguin species don't even live in the Antarctic. Tropical penguins don't look fundamentally different.
I get the point of the show isn't to correct the caller that their view of biology is horribly wrong, it's about their argument but I want to scream at the callers at time. They should've just said, but penguins exist in the tropics like Namibia, Angola and South Africa. But that wouldn't benefit the conversation.

Contrary to what Matt said, humans did evolve from apes. Humans are apes, and our common ancestor with other apes was also an ape. Chimpanzees are more closely related to humans than Gorillas.
The reason Matt says that is because all too often among the crowd that Matt usually talks to, when people hear 'ape' their minds immediately go to chimp and gorilla. Matt says that to avoid people from thinking that.

Hitler was also a Christian, that's not a hill he wanted to die on, matt showed mercy.
Actually he wasn't a Christian. Hitler only publicly supported Christianity. Privately he considered it an effeminate, weak, pacifistic religion not suitable for the German people. He would have preferred if the Germans chose Islam or Shintoism as their main religion. Privately Hitler was an atheist. He considered himself a man of science, even though his ideas were not scientific.

I don't mean to claim religion as the main cause of Hitler's regime. He was hunting predominantly Jewish people though, so that does appear to be religious motivations, that's speculative I guess.
He was obviously not entirely in grasp of his critical faculties, so flights of fancy are more likely.

I am waiting for the day when credible universities have to give religious exemptions for the science requirements to get a Bachelors degree. Dixon must have gone to a faith-based school, even though his voice sounds like he may still be in high school, where children are denied preparation for the real world.

IT WAS A VISION! Do your dreams make perfect sense in a real world and if you relate them to someone else do they seem to be 'blatantly preposterous"? But many (not all)dreams have deeper meanings that would be helpful to the dreamer. The Bible is full of symbolism and prophetic dreams and visions - we're supposed to be smart enough to ask God to help us understand them so that we can know what is really being said. John 3 16, however, is not written in symbolic language and anyone can comprehend what the words say - it's an invitation to know God's love, the desire of His heart and His promise to those who trust Him, whether they choose to believe those words or not.

Some biblical dreams were interpreted as coming true, so we can look to others to see if they have prophetic meaning - again YOU do the research - it will mean more to you that way. 3. why did Jesus speak in so many parables? (short answer - those who WANT to understand, will seek Him for the answer - those who couldn't care less will never know.) 4. Intelligence is an idol worshipped by many today. It has no bearing at all on whether a person can know God or not. In fact, some who regard themselves as quite intelligent are considered fools to God. Have a good day.

One thing people never mention is the earth itself is far from perfect. Some areas are too dry and some too wet. Some are too cold, etc. Then you have a molten core center. Why? If a perfect creator created it why it it so far from perfect? Why is it not 75 degrees every day and plenty of fresh drinkable water? Why is heaven perfect, but God blew it on earth? Sin is not a reason for a poor design of the earth itself

Hey Dixon. Penguins live in Australia and it’s a bloody hot climate here.
Penguins can live in all sorts of climates. I saw them in London zoo. No ice required.
I've seen them several times in the desert, on the wild. Humboldt penguins are a thing and they are awesome.
In the southern hemisphere there are penguin colonies above the 33rd parallel, which is a temperate zone 6000 km from any natural ice.
As a long time penguin enthusiast, I am immensely irritated that it was not brought up that there are also penguins who live in South America, Australia, and Africa. THEY ARE NOT ALL ARCTIC BIRDS.

I seriously think it's worth being more gentle with young callers. They are new to the debate concepts and trying their best to reason through. They are also the most open-minded to challenges to their established status quo. I know matt has to deal with these arguments constantly, but there is real opportunity to help spread skepticism among religious communities by being willing to engage in more low-level debate with the younger ones.

We don't have a common ancestor with "THEM". There's no "them" to have a common ancestor with.
This is exactly like saying bulldogs share a common ancestor with dogs.
The next thing is a bit more controversial, but it shouldn't be: The scientific evolutionary model DOES say we evolved from monkeys ("Old World monkeys"), so we ARE monkeys.

At the time, I thought he went over my head since I haven't had a Science class in ages and my memory is medically flawed. When he says we share a common ancestor with Them- he is referring to Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Bonobos & Orangutans.
The ancestor we share is a species that is no longer around today.

You need to learn about the biological concepts of "ingroup" (us) "outgroup" ("them").
Gorillas are the ones who can call bonobos, chimpanzees and humans "them". We CAN'T. Because WE are US.
We can call bonobos and chimpanzees "them". That's it. We can never group bonobos and chimpanzees with gorillas without also including ourselves.
If you make a group that includes gorillas and chimpanzees, THEN WE BELONG THERE AS WELL.
There's no way around this fact.

But we are still all different species which means I can absolutely say “Them”

We can not interbreed with any of the other Great Apes and we have differences in our Genes & Chromasomes that make a big enough difference for me to 100% be able to say “Them”

We know straight off the bat the caller was ignorant. Most penguins may live in colder climates but the Galapagos Penguins live at the equator. The only thing you could say about Penguins is that they did not live north of the equator.

This caller’s worldview is completely stuck in one giant hypothetical, yet he‘s completely unable to grasp what a hypothetical is.
