Have you done any unexpected or non-traditional paint schemes on minis and been really pleased (surprised?) by the results?

    • @naphaneal
      @naphaneal 5 років тому +3

what's a traditional paint scheme? if you consider "box art" as traditional: yes, every time. unexpected: also, yes. for a painting competition a local game store held. I painted a heartseeker of Slaneesh more in the lines of a lizard than the usual pinkish-purplish style

I’m just getting into warhammer and my little sister (12) wanted to paint tyranids with me. She chose to go with a variation on behemoth with green accents, and she used my 3D printer to build her own base! I thought it would look like a watermelon but she pulled it off quite well!

Hey Jarrett! You said you used Vallejo Premium White Primer, I assume that's the brush-on kind? I'm having some trouble with beading using Contrast paints over spray primer, so I'm looking for a better solution.

I really really like the idea of painting them like The Fallen, and it's inspired me to keep an eye out for cheap Beastmen models to do this with myself.
They also seem to take contrast really well which is cool, the only models I've tried contrast on haven't taken to it very much (Tau infantry fatigues mostly).

I like the style. colourful dudes. It's a LOT of different coulours being used though, especially these rather expensive contrast paints. hmm. >_>

Beautiful work, my dude. You've certainly earned yourself a sub.
That said, something that you might want to consider for finishing, and this is not at all meant to detract from the quality of your end product, because the colors and technique are solid: try finishing up with a few spots of gloss or satin varnish over your matte coat with a brush. It can really help to step things up just a bit more. Matte varnish hides a lot of crimes, but it can also bury a lot of distinct changes in material. It'll make wet and/or shiny stuff come back to looking wet and/or shiny, and it's usually just a few extra minutes of effort.
Just passing along some tricks and ideas from one painter to another. Beautiful work, and keep it up.

That's a brillant color scheme and it's quite intersting to follow your work flow. seeing you combining all those painting techniques in a fluid process gives me some perspective on ways to improve my painting.
I'm so stealing that idea by the way! 😈

They look SICK. They look a lot more red in the final shot compared to the painting steps, where they look more orange. Did the varnish make the redder, is it the light or is it a filter?

I wasn't too sold on the models either but they do seem designed in a way that you can do a lot of different things with the which others like the skeletons and skaven didn't seem as good for. They were too defined to a certain in lore group while the beastmen alone can be changed to suit any number of factions. I've seen some great khorne looking ones, some great slaanesh looking ones. I think a good starter box has to have a certain level of freedom in the appearance to let players make them their own and they are certainly a nice way to do it without resorting to 'i paint my guy in armour or flappy ghost OC colours'.

Thank you for this video. I really love how you describe the thought process behind each additional color you use. Hearing how you wanted things to stand out or you didn't quite like the direction it was going so you changed approach is huge in highlighting (ha) how painting a mini isn't about having a perfect plan going in, but adapting your approach as you go.

It makes me want to start collecting Beastmen even though I play Warmahordes.

Thank you so much for this video. This concept is something I have told people when they get stuck on how to paint something. Find an inspiration from some other area that you love. Painting space marines in your favorite teams color, etc.Great example of exactly that. OK and at less than 3 minutes you use the one thing with contrast I wish people would do more (because it is super easy and makes the contrast so much more effective.) Use it again in the shaded areas. Straight throwing fire my friend, best video so far! (That's saying something as I already liked your videos to begin with.)

Interesting paint scheme. Been really enjoying your creative use of the contrast paints. I have been pretty cool on that particular paint line, but you are getting some really nice results with it. I personally would have deviated from the reference material and made their eyes that same turquoise color. I think that would have really made the eyes, and faces overall, standout. Thanks for the video!

Another great video. I really enjoyed seeing the way you used different methods to shade over the orange contrast as a base. I’m working up to be brave enough to use my airbrush more in my painting and I like the way you use inks with it to achieve effects.
