Thanks Stu. Loving your tutorials. Got my first uke 5 weeks ago. I played classical guitar as a teenager. Am now 65. Have mastered the triple strum you showed Formby style. Wow! Will order a tee shirt to wear when I teach my yoga classes!! ;) Namaste.
Hi Timothy, good to hear from a fellow Yogi 🙏🏻🎶 I am glad that you’re enjoying my videos… I post new content every week here on the channel… Hope you subscribe for more goodies 😊 Wishing you well! Namaste.
That’s wonderful to hear Carol… Not about your injury, but that the lesson is helping you to find softer ways of approaching the instrument. I highly recommend stopping often and making this into a hardwired habit… Every time we touch the instrument we feel the space and the lightness of touch. Be jamming, and if you haven’t already, please subscribe to this channel for more videos like this one!
Thank you Uncle Zen. I am a beginner and you are helping me a lot ... thank you. I was stressing before I found you. I am back to being dedicated to learn. :)
I have been ignoring the increasing pain in my thumb for a year, hoping it will disappear. Of course it hasn’t and my playing time is now limited because of it. I will practice your tips and stay tuned for more. My ukulele keeps me company and challenges me during these sad and solitary times. Your channel is a lifeline for me. Thank you.
Thanks for being here Susan and I'm glad you got something good from this video lesson. It takes time, but with consistent attention the habit of gripping tightly can be changed 😊 Be well...glad to keep you company via my lessons. Hope you'll subscribe for more videos like this 🎶🤙
I had that problem to the point that I thought that I would need surgery. I had to limit myself to a half hour or 45 minutes of practice. It still bothers me if I don't conciously relax it especially with challenging chords.like Barre chords.
Nice, simple help for the opening of my daily practice. Usually I just start through my list of (simple) songs. This is a nice touch that will be a good opening reminder of what it’s all about. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it & thanks for saying hi Dennis...adding this approach to your daily warm up of songs can help improve any tricky chord changes that you encounter 😊 🎶
Hey Stu been following your channel for a couple months now since I took up the Ukulele in January this year. Love this lesson for me personally who is still very much a laymen player. Keep these coming. Thx
Thanks very much - I am a full-time professional and can play all kinds of complex stuff - however, I delight in making things accessible so everybody can join in. Be well & play on, Stu
Thanks Stu. I'm a beginner in the UK thoroughly enjoying learning from you and your youtube colleagues. Really enjoyed this tutorial. I shall keep tuned in. I'm a big tai chi fan too. Stay safe and bless you.
I have friends who struggle to sing and strum so starting tomorrow their going to be singing 1,2,3 and 4 then once they got that down do it again and emphasise the first strum then strum 1 and 3. Brilliant work Stu as usual and using that cheeky Dm in there is inspired. Stay safe
Ive not seen my friend for 10 Covid weeks so it was great today to finally catch up and for us to Uke it out. hes so improved and loved your chord vamp. Happy Jammin
awesome compliment to what we are doing with that reminder to relax too, Stu....loving how you break things down to basics and then build on these, building confidence at the same time to add voice AND counting! After playing in groups for years knowing many chords, struggling with chord changes, strumming poorly just kind of keeping up, this is so helpful to moving me forward from stuckness, loss of passion and confidence and undoing really bad cramped habits. I love your compassion, understanding and generosity of spirit and your 'heart'. I also love your choice of tunes....and your fingerpicking!!!! Makes it so much more interesting too as you make those links, of chords, the fretboard, so we can see beyond all the trees and recognise the interconnectedness that makes the forest!!! And all that in your playful way.
Thanks for picking up on but I’m laying down Esther! Try to keep it fun, playful… And go deep into music training in a kindly holistic way. 🎶😊👍🙏🏻 Keep on jamming!
Ukulele Zen You’re welcome 😊 and I have subscribed to your channel :-) I really enjoy listening and watching and learning from you thank you I know it takes a lot of time and effort on your part but I just want you to know I appreciate it. I’m a new beginner and I already have learned so much from you👍🌴

Great tutorial, Stu! The other thing i "sing" are the notes when i arpeggio those same chords; also E7 fits in nicely with Dm & Am for ez 3-chord progression...
How's the extra strumming pattern like tt you were playing besides just the down strumming on only the first beat. Sounds better. Can you teach that strum pattern?
Ahahaha great pizza! Molto bene ♥️ u ar so funny, thanks to o much, i started playing uke 2 years ago, but i think i bend still the wrist! I will pay attention to it ! Thank u .. ciaoooo
Hey Mia, it's a similar process with bar chords...it gets adjusted a bit for the different physical conditions the hand has to go through for the bar chords...but the common element is stopping, softening & letting go. Could be a patron thing for sure...
Stiffness has been my big problem. I am getting better since I come to meet your videos though... I think I try too hard to loose my stiffness😅 And that makes another stiffness...
Yes… I totally understand what you mean. I’ve worked on Saufley of my hand for many years so it takes patience and consistency. Keep on staying with it on a regular basis and you’ll see the hand will soften up when we train it to relax and let go. It can be very humbling how long it may take, but it will happen with consistently showing up 🙏🏻🎶🤙😃
I'm having trouble keeping space between the uke and the hand. I kind of got used to playing using the palm as support. Maybe I need a strap or I'm holding it wrong.
If your hand stays relaxed, it's all good. I would recommend a strap unless you've got a little soprano uke - they're light enough to hold w/o a strap usually. Whatever feels right for you Naveen :-)
Great lesson however i feel like i slip into cradling the uke in between my thumb and palm simply because i have quite large hands and I'm not sure how to correctly hold the tenor uke up should i have a strap instead? but my uke doesn't have the little button at the bottom to attach to! Confusing times and impeding my ability to move around the fret board :/
I hear you 100%. Two things: 1. you may want to get a strap button installed at a local music store someday - having a strap is very liberating for the left hand...makes everything much easier. 2. It's OK to cradle the uke in the crease of the thumb as long as it still feels like a relaxed "grip"....while. make these suggestions, I fully respect that everyone has different hands & needs - so do what is comfortable for you 🤙 Play on! 🎶
This is all well and good if you have long slender fingers like yours, theres no way i can get my short stubby fat fingers to do this, and my thumb refuses to sit nicely on the back of the neck......HELP....
Thank you! So encouraging on a cold winter’s night!
You are so welcome! Keep on jamming 😊🤙🎶

Thanks mucho!

Love the lesson, as a beginner I tend to squeeze the neck. Greetings Stu, keep the good work.
Thanks Joel! Relaxing the hands is my "North Star" of practice so to speak....everything else seems to fall in line from there 😉🤙

Stu, I'm finding because i'm doing so many barred chords, that yes, I'm getting too tense. Thoughts? Maybe a patreon thing???

Stu can you please teach that intro that you "got out of your system"? 😁
Sure - I'll do that someday soon. That is a tune I recorded on my 1st CD Stukulele called "Iwao's Blues"....I was just going on autopilot there...
2.48 what are you doing??
