  • Over the past 20 years, there have been a number of major, if not catastrophic, tsunamis that have led to numerous fatalities and brought about increased awareness of their impact, which has resulted in significant advances in understanding where and how they are generated.
This talk, by BGS geologist David Tappin, briefly covers how this raised awareness has developed, focusing on events such as the Papua New Guinea submarine landslide tsunami of 1998 (when 2200 people died), to the Indian Ocean earthquake tsunami of 2004 (when 220 000 died in Indonesia, India and Thailand) and, most recently, events in Indonesia and Tonga from volcanic eruptions.
David has researched all of these recent tsunamis, especially focusing on those from submarine landslides and volcanic eruptions.
