Altered Beast is a 1988 beat 'em up arcade video game developed and manufactured by Sega. The game is set in Ancient Greece and follows a player character chosen by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena from the demonic ruler of the underworld, Neff. Through the use of power-ups, the player character can assume the form of different magical beasts (wolf, dragon, bear, tiger, and golden wolf). It was ported to several home video game consoles and home computers. It was the pack-in game for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis when that system launched in 1988.

Man, I remember not being able to beat this game on the Sega Genesis. At age 22, I went *"full determination mode"* and I finally beat it. Now at age 26 and it seems like it's demanding me to play again.

Oof. I know that Altered Beast had many ports, but I didn't think there could be any as clunky as the Master System version. Maybe the Genesis/Mega Drive port isn't so bad after all.

The Genesis version is much better. Besides the graphical and audio limitations of the MS version, this one also cut the cave level.

Genesis/Mega-Drive port 4 or 5 megabits didn’t seem or it wasn’t much better than the SMS version 2 or 3 megabits
