This is the first episode of The Screen Savers taped on the brand new set in San Francisco in the TechTV Studios. This is a 90 minute episode!
I remember my landscaping job dried up and I spent all day sitting around watching The Screen Savers and Call For Help until I finally said, "I should go back to school for this stuff." I did and now I've had a 10 year career in IT. Thanks!
That's an amazing story. It's only worth if you're enjoying it somehow. Congratulations!
You still alive?
Outstanding story
update?
@@DarthSinistris Yeah it's going great. Getting into Azure administration now.
I miss being in my 20s. This show was my life back then. No one, not even Leo, creates content this good anymore.
Woah!!! Anyone else catch the "Micheal Scott" cameo at 15:45 lol was not expecting him in a commercial........ Also the Expedia commercial about the mosquito nets is bang in haha... I stayed at a place in Costa Rica like that
Man do I miss this show.
Same here.
7 years later... still the best computer show on tv
Leo bought 7 bitcoins around this time as he said on twit. I got the idea from him and got myself 10. Thank goodness!!
12:21 - Do we miss CompUSA ?
@@295g295, we all miss Leo, tho.
This was podcasting/streaming in its most early form. The episodes were live and they often interacted with chat. They deserve respect for playing a part in getting a generation in love with tech.
I used to be addicted to this show.
I remember making an animated Tech TV logo using Bryce for a contest they had... Never heard from them, though I was pretty proud of it.
Miss being in high school and running home to watch this show. The vhs lines enhance my nostalgia
Same man. I was a sophomore in HS when this episode aired. I loved spending my summers too just binging the Screensavers, call for help, just everything on techtv and ZDTV
I called in via web cam on the screen savers sometime in 2001-2002 and I'd love to find it. I asked how to expand the start menu to show all the control panel buttons.
God bless You Tube for this and R.I.P. TechTV. This REALLY made my evening. It's amazing that even though some of the info is outdated there is a lot of relevant and interesting info to be had some nine, ten years later. This was a part of my youth and I'm glad I can still see it and reminisce with old friends. Happy trails ZD TV and Tech TV. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your arm pits G4.
This brings back so many memories of when computing was fun and exciting. Now in 2024, not so much. I really miss the early days of personal computing.
Man... shows like this inspired me when I was in high school.
This is the show that inspired me to build my first computer. Everyday I’d sit on my couch, watching this show while I’d wait for UPS to deliver my computer part… after 2-3 weeks of shipping time, which was typical then…for anything really. When id see the UPS truck come up the driveway it was such a joy. I’d always be watching this wonderful show when he’d show up. Yep, I miss those simpler times.
I used to watch the same episodes of The Screen Savers twice. Once at night, and then again the following morning. The Screen Savers and Call for Help were always the highlight of my day. Leo Laporte essentially taught me everything I know about computers and thanks to him I'm in the career I am today.
Nostalgia is hitting me straight in the face! I loved Techtv when it was one. This was the early 2000s, the birth place of the internet. When the majority of people used dial-up/AOL and broadband was all the craze. Miss those days.
I used to game on my computer and have this on in the background off my tube tv around freshman year. The days of no responsibilities or issues lol
It definitely was the last CD burner I ever needed lol how time flies
I used to watch this before I even had my own PC and still had a family computer and was still entertained and learned some stuff.
Oh how I miss these shows.
Fk I loved tech tv so much! Loved this show. Would watch it after IT school everyday
i wish they would put this back on tv
This is a mega blast from the past. I used to watch this when I got home from school and even though I didn't have a computer I still really enjoyed learning about all of it and when my mom eventually got us a fancy Dell desktop I immediately knew everything there was to know about it. Such a great show and such a great time for tech, especially computers, just the leap in innovation after the new millennium made a show like this was so important because computers were becoming a more commercial thing and not so much a niche market so having a resource like The Screensavers and Tech TV was wonderful
I used to love THE SCREEN SAVERS!
I have not thought about this show in 17 years. Wow... I watched reruns every morning before school.
I can't tell you how comforting it is to see Patrick and Leo's faces.
used to baby sit this kid "eventually became two" the parents had direct tv or whatever with tech tv. being a computer nut kid myself loved finding this show and playboy! used to love those days!!
this was just the beginning of my love for computers on tv...smile
Really loved this show when I was younger. I was 16 when this aired and still remember watching this every time it came on. It further fueled that passion I had for tech stuff.
Thank you so much for putting this up
Love the fact that this was recorded on VHS originally...gives this a real retro vibe lol
MrShiffles I actually hate the VHS quality, as it makes it look older and worse than it was.
Pretty good chance that WAS the last CD burner people needed!
Please bring back Tech TV!
I can't quit you, The Screen Savers. This show was so great. I curse the day Comcast bought it out with its gruesome G4.
Its cute people are still tore up about this over a decade later
They were better when they were separate, but so fucking terrible when it merged.
G4 was fine, just different. You just hate change.
@@BadMannerKoreaold g4 was good not the new trash that ruined it
Thanks for keeping the commercials in there! I forgot that Steve Carrel did commercials back then.
this crew was the best
I remember this show! I have learned so much, and saved plenty of money! Need to bring something back to TV again.
Those were the days.
i'm watching this at work...nice you recorded the commercials. A fucking hero and it has Steve Carell
what a blast from the past
Never missed a show....
Loud Leo and Pat Norton. The good old days.
Nice, a full episode to reminisce about tech.
Miss this show.
Wish I had drinks with these guys.
+Ghost Dog, watch this and see where it all started and how they ALL act toward each other. They were a swell group of computer entertainment,
Heck, this goes back far enough that Patrick still had hair! :D Depending on the camera angles, Sarah Lane is sitting behind them.
Some of these people are still at the "tech journalism" thing in 2020: "Daily Tech News Show" and "This Week in Tech" come to mind.
Keep these coming!
I wish i could go back in time... I remember watching this show with my sister all the time, we had a blue clamshell ibook and played the sims livin' large lol, and I was so excited to see where computers were going in the next decade... even though we have the ipad and smartphones with huge screens, i'm really disappointed with the really slow pace of technology in the last 5 or 6 years -.-
Norton & Leo look almost the exact same today.
wow Michaela Pereira at 1:08:12 what a difference.
Had a huge crush on Micheala back in the day
LEO LAPORTE is on TWIT.TV
Careful, if you watch TWIT TV for more than a few hours you're bound to see Leo's weiner.....
We are 20 years down the road and the world has gone to hell in a handbasket.
I remember watching this every night when I was 12, and I use to always creep the webcams they had on set in the off hours.
The Screen Savers as well as Tech TV exemplify the saying "all good things come to a end".
I had the gateway SE!! Wow. Throwback indeed.
Miss Techtv but I love This Week in Tech Netcast Network
"Half of all households have some kind of internet access but only 10% have broadband" Ufff... miss this soo much...
6:10 they show a screenshot of GTA 3 but are talking about GTA 2
Crazy I was a 13 watching this show. Actually had a pioneer burner it exploded cds
I loved that show!
Im here to win the gateway computer.
Roughly a dozen years after this aired, Leo commented that astronauts on the International Space Station likely carried more computing power in one hand than was available for the whole of the Apollo program.
Man I miss these days. Good times!
This is so nostalgic now.
Leo's always on point making sure to clarify the intent of people's sometimes confusing comments.
Wild Yahoo had the idea for Xbox game pass in 2002
This was an awesome show I miss them
How do I adjust the tracking on this VCR?
Anyone else remember Leo getting a little bit spicy every now and again? I seem to remember him saying stuff that would almost get you fired even back in the 90's. I never thought he crossed a line but he came pretty close.
Legend has it that they are still giving those Gateway 500se systems away to this very day...
I loved the Screen Savers. You could tell that they were TRYING to be professional, but... I loved it when they'd put PC's underwater.
Is it too late to win one of those computers? I think it'll be an upgrade from what I got currently.
That Gateway computer looks sweet ! How do I enter the drawing ??
Damm I miss Tech TV and all the hosts the crap they have on tv is a joke!!!!!
Working from home? It'll never catch on.
15:39 Steve Carrell doing a FedEx commercial?
I remember watching this in the early 2000's
Wait… they did video calls on TV in 2002?
I started watching this show when I was 13
I used to love this show.
50:52 there was also a website called "Cool To Be Real" or something that tried to teach kids that it's good to eat meat, and not turn vegetarian. I turned vegetarian.
I wish I was American, so I could of watched this show!
funny still waatchin' after 15 years. back then i was repairing computers on the side. tech tv was goin 24/7 at home. i love the comercials.... "dude your getting a peice of crap!!"
"It's a gorgeous site!" lol yikes. Hopefully Dick is travelling the stars.
NOSTALGIA! :(
I remember the commercials too haha
I love the into.
Leo and Pat don't age minus Pat's hair.
Technology before Apple took over....those were the days. Good thing we have Google now otherwise we might all be forced to pay Apple to watch videos like this
Actually, Apple was just somewhat starting to (with the advent of the iMac G3 in 1998, the iPod in 2001, and the flat-screen iMac G4 in 2002).
Use to love TechTv...never was into computers, but I still use to enjoy its programming. I guess Tech tv was to intelligent for tv because the garbage remains on TV.
yep all i watched 20yrs ago was discovery, speed, tech tv and history when they have modern marvels
fuckin eh
Exactly, “the garbage remains”!
lol...maaan I missed this show
What a set!
Gateway. Totally forgot about this company.
I used to do tech support for them. There is a reason most people have forgotten about them
Omg i wish this was still on 24 7. I would actually turn on a television AND LEARN STUFF!
Reruns it is.
downloading games? idk man
Sadly, us that want this back, it's never going to happen. Even TV is changing. People are watching less and less TV and more programming is going towards on demand digital media.
this episode can now be done in 2-4 tweets.
Most families in US don't want broadband internet? How would you watch online videos and gaming?
I really wish they would bring back stuff like this main stream
How does Patrick look the same as he did 20 years ago?
Once you hit max level you stop leveling
Tech tv was like mtv in that it was a new medium with no other programming source initially. Both were great but the newness wore off quickly and with it the demand for full channel daily viewing dwindled. I missed this type of programming so much I was one of the first subscribers to twit.
Andy from Conowingo sounded like he didn't really like talking to Leo.
At some point, TSS went back to being a 60 minute show. Not sure of the exact date on that one.
Anyone else watch this and almost immediately add Creed's Weathered album to your music playlist?
