_“The quality doesn’t matter to them [the passive consumer]. And do you know why? Because they don’t understand the value of quality because they don’t have that quality in their lives.”_
Quote of the year Ralfy! That’s a WMD of a truth bomb. Same can be said of the senior managers of distilleries who make the decisions to chill-filter, add color, age in dead casks, and do all they can to cheapen their product. That quote should be a tee shirt.
The walk from Ardbeg to Laphroaig with a bottle of Ardbeg 10 shared between friends and blue skies is a nice malt moment for me.
Dear Ralfy, on behalf of all Italians, many thanks for sharing your recollection of Limoncello in Amalfi. 🇮🇹 grazie 🙏 ciao amico mio. S.
Your Xtras are always so good, but this one shows the Ralphy Philosophy at its very best. Thanks for sharing!
That started like a "fitter philosophy" episode 😅but yes, this is good old Ralfy as we know him and love him!
My malt moment: Several warm evenings in September 2015 Bowmore Harbour with my friends tasting an old bottle of Laphroaig 15 yrs. It was magic!
Ralfy's Amalfi mellow limoncello malt moment - love it!
Hello, Ralfy!
I've been following your videos for quite a while, and I've continuously found joy and knowledge in watching your reviews and extras, and you've really helped me a lot in expanding and enhancing my whisky experience, and in having better malt moments along the journey, even during extremely hard times..
I have a malt mention, and I really hope it makes it in one of your videos:
Hello, Marvelous Mirthful Moonlight Malt Mates..
And thanks a lot for your amazing, genuine, joyful and informative stuff..
Sláinte!
Amin
Thank you for the great insight in to the refined Malt Moment 🙂👍☕
I live in Manchester, but as I watch this episode, I’m in Sicily, with a small bottle of limoncello sat right here, to sample this evening, on our verandah, overlooking the Mediterranean. Nice bit of synchronicity!
I can't believe you found a bottle of Elmer T. Lee in Vegas! I've never seen one. When you mentioned Las Vegas, I was sure you were gonna say Smoke Wagon bourbon. As for alcohol transporting me to other places, Scotch and Rum do that for me. Rum transports me to the US Virgin Islands (St. Johns), and Scotch takes me back to my vacation in the Highlands and Edinburgh. I toured the Glenlivet distillery, although I have to say I'm not a Glenlivet drinker (It was just a lot easier to go there than the Isle of Arran:).
I like the fact that you're travelling around beautiful places with rich culture of spirits - cheers 🥃
A particularly good video..hadn't thought of some of the ideas you express here...and you express them very poetically.
All ye gather round for brother Ralfy is holding court and teaching us lessons worth listening too. When I pour a dram from my humble abode in Australia it takes me too the rugged coasts of Islay or the rolling hills of the highlands. Enjoy the moments like these and appreciate the the craftsmanship. Somethings are worth savoring..
Thank you for sharing this moment with us ralphy, you transported me back in Italy as well. These moments is what we all seek for and you can only let them happen, all you must have is an open mind and a heart of exploration.
Love the extras so much
Lovely video Ralfy, would love to hear more of your stories of your travels and drams in future extras.
My uncle bought some mezcal from the mountains of Michoacán Mexico. It was the best experience I ever had. Your right ralfy!
Dear Ralfy,
I returned from a trip in Austria and Italy, where I had an experience after which I told my girlfriend that I have to comment on THAT Ralfys video. So, we drove up the magnificent piece of roadbuilding called the Plöckenpass (Passo di Monte Croce Carnico in Italian) between the two countries. On the summit, next to the former border terminal, is cute northern Italian restaurant owned by the same family for the last 75 years. Fantastic home-made food, local wine, local coffee and friendly staff. After the dinner, they asked us, if we´d like "digestivo". Yes, it was Limoncello, made by old female owner of the restaurant. It had beautiful yellow to orange colour (not pale you find in shops) and you could taste the peel of the lemons. It was gratis and it was Limoncello moment which elevated beautiful holiday to unforgettable. We took a bottle of wine home and my only regret is that I didn´t ask if it´s possible to buy also Limoncello. Maybe next year.
Cincin!
Greeting Mr Ralfy, what a video, human brain is a fascinating organ, you smell a perfume or cologne and 50 yrs later if you smell the same perfume, you would instantly remember it.I really enjoy my single malt when I am camping, a few sips , Cuban cigar and some Allan Parsons music. Shallow experience shallow people , used to see them a lot in rooftop bars etc, all they knew about whisky was Chivas Regal with 200 grams of ice . 😆😆 Honestly the best thing that I had heard in so long was the margin between being drunk and stupid and enjoying the drink, very very well said sir.
On my travels I have bought bottles of whisky's , but not drank them at the location where I was, but took them home. Still, when I open them at home I remember the holiday, the place where I bought it. Like a whisky I bought in Tokyo on my honeymoon, the whisky I bought in Aviemore 1 day after I got married there. The whisky I bought in New York... From a lot of bottles whixh I didn't buy in a local shop or online, I know where I got them from. Drinking them brings back the memories and that makes the malt moment more special than drinking something bought from a website or a shop in the district where I live. I have a blended whisky , bougth at lidl in the uk. Distilled in 1981! 34 years old! Quite a sherry bomb, because it was distilled in 1981, it brings back memories of that time , I was in primay school then, aged 12. It's the stories behind the bottle that can make a malt moment more special too :-) I have 2 bottles of Armagnac now in the house, distilled in 1968, my birthyear. Bottled 2021, so 53 years old! 1 bottle was 200 euro, the other just 100 euro! Will be opened when I have my 60th birthday, and when I retire. Ofcourse no memories from 1968 :-) But when I drink them, I'll remember all what happened since then, in my lifetime... It makes drinking a dram that bit more special than drinking a standard whisky from a big brand. Thanks Ralfy for all those video's and all your stories. I have seen almost all of them. Enjoying it a lot. Learned a lot. Will keep watching them. Slàinte mhath !
Extras Episode for the ages. Thanks for this one.
Just listening to you right now, I'm going through my head of the malts I've had and the memories associated with each one. Since I only drink when all is well, every memory is a grand one. Thank you!
ET Lee is elegant bourbon. Wonderful stuff. Glad you were able to find a few bottles!
I've never had ET Lee, but I completely trust Rally's judgement on whiskies, so I'm sure it's a good one. However, too bad it's chill-filtered. I'm sure I'll end up getting a bottle at some point though.
After a couple of extras where you took us through the basics of a tasting notes and ways we can acess malts, this is very important episode where we can hear the very essence of your tasting philosophy and the source of enjoyment in high quality spirits 😀
ralfy's wisdom... priceless and leaves you speechless...
Time is not valuable when youth has it in abundance. When you mature. When you start to focus. When you start to live. Maybe.
Great stuff as ever Ralfy.
According to UA-cams subtitles, Amanda's malt mention was a *Mock malt mention* and you Ralfy are in *The Buffy*...😆😆😆
Quality videos as per usual..
Ah yes. Elmer T. Lee. The quintessential high rye bourbon that drinks so elegantly. Elmer really knew how to pick honey barrels out of the rickhouse. The reason why we have Blanton’s bourbon is because of Elmer. Luckily I have a few bottles stored away in the face of outrageous price increases.
it should be included in Ralfy's best! it's such a poetic spiritual manifest! Cheers!
Hi Ralfy,
an interesting topic, but you forgot the Madeira and the Port wine 😉
cheers
I savor the moment couple of times every week sitting near the fireplace with a dram or two watching a wiseman sharing his experience and joys in this channel.
Ralfy the Romantic - love it!!
"Carpe diem." Sipping on Clyde May's Alabama Style with a dear friend on his front porch in celebration of the the purchase of his new home. The whiskey was small batch at the time and had such a unique, almost a caramel, butter scotch hint. My friend, who had tragically lost his wife a few years prior to, was in tears knowing that he and his young daughter would not be able to share this home with her. We sipped some more. Sadly, he was killed in a car accident only a few weeks later. Although I've never been able to quite recapture that memorable flavor with any subsequent bottle of Clyde May's, I will always have fond memories of that time with my friend on that front porch and just how damn good that whiskey was on that day.
Such memories keep you warm in cold times. Carpe noctem.
@@geezerama Indeed they do
😌🥃
@@geezerama yessir
Thanks Ralfy, great outlook on pleasures often not appreciated!
You’ve made me really look forward to this winter now! Can’t wait to get my burner fired up and sip a quality short drink 👍
I absolutely loved your description of Amalie lemon chello moment! 🍸🥃
A better bourbon is EH Taylor by the way, made by a southern officer after the war. You'll love it! If ya invite me to your island I'll bring ya a bottle haha
Greetings from TX
Lovely talk.
I love these extras 😁
"Everything in life is as deep as you are" - Unknown. What a great fuckin youtube channel!! Thank you.
You are my favorite whiskey reviewer. Thank you Ralfy!
Ralfy, you're a dreamer. 🙂
“Ralfy in the Amalfi”having a limoncello moment…. thanks for sharing my learned whisky Sensei 🙇
Ralfy, you are a poet. Thank you!
Coors Light takes me straight back to the days I crewed stock cars in the PNW... it's not just the burnt tire notes either.
Enjoyed this xxtras. When you are envisioning being in Mexico with your medical and palm tress are you still wearing the flannel jacket? Haha. That was in my head. It is true though, when you enjoy an integrity bottle that you spent your hard earned money on, you want to get taken away from the physical space your in and go to another place. No worries or thoughts or phones or televisions...just you, the dram, and an enjoyable moment within your head. Hard for some to relate and understand. Thank you
I only like drinking my fancier whiskies for the first drink or 2, after that I switch to my economical bottles, it almost feels like a waste as it is hard for me to enjoy with the effects of alcohol starting to take place!
To clarify, enjoy all the different notes, as they get missed as my senses get effected
You're right to do so. I smoke grass now and then and I would never poor myself a quality dram while being high. I like my whisky with a clear mind, and a clean mouth
Cheers
In Greece there's Tsipuro... One of the best my holiday, Tsipuro moments...😉
"You don't want pure, you dont want clean, you don'- For goodness sake, maltmates i'm telling you, you dont want smooth! never ever want smooth. no chance. Never!"
Quote of the year for me!
Great video Ralfy. Personally I only pour about a dram (yes...the old 1/8th ounce dram) into a glencairn when I am tasting any of my bottles. I spent more time nosing it, then I do drinking it. and even that dram gets spilt up into 3 or 4 sips separated by time. I find if I drink more then I do start to feel it, and then I think my perception of it has been affected. Truly enjoying the journey and finding the few bottles that I really like the taste and smell of...
Everything you talk about in this episode Ralfy is very closely connected to the (spiritual - _no pun intended_ ) concept of mindfulness.
Thanks Ralfy!!
I fucking love this dude. Keep it up my moreishly magical malty master of malevolence !!
Based on my own experiences of LSD it's maybe not a fair comparison to make with mild alcoholic inebriation. Psychological perceptions are very inconsistent for one, yet the sensation that a wee dram gives you coupled with a still firm foot in reality can be consistent. Some good stories bro
It can also bring loved ones to mind
Great story and a good lesson as well.
You're simply the best. 😎
I don't drink a ton of beer these days since becoming enamoured with the varied world of spirits however at a pub on Saturday night I tried a whisky cask Cider for the first time, you could taste the quality straight away, it's a shame to not be open to these new personal experiences, you never know what you might find.
"Truths like fists"... that's what Ralfy brings us in his reviews and extras!... I've become an Xtras addict... Thanks Ralfy for all the valuable tips cheers! 🥃🙏
LSD Ralfy!! - we talking Pounds, Shillings and Pence then?? ( librum, solidus, denarius). Seriously though, some of my finest memories have involved the heady concoction of people, place and alcohol and I trust they will be many more. Och.....perhaps that could be thee and me one day sharing a malt moment eh Ralfy? 😀
You need to get some Paranubes rum from Mexico that is in the vein of Haitian clairin and it’s done as rustic and old school as it gets. Wild fermentation like clairin and made on a still fired with used cane fibers. Less than $40 for a 1 liter bottle
Fitter Philosophy sits down at the bar and has a wee dram or a limoncello with Ralfy.
Julio Iglesias sang - To all The Girls I loved before, To All the Girls Who Cared For Me - In Ralfy's World, To All the Bottles I Loved Before....
The Elmer T Lee - simply the best for sure.
As I go on my whisky journey the number of opened bottles increases, so one day I find myself not spending the time and enjoying the loving relationship some bottles diverse..So now I try to increase the stash more then the opened bottle library... Cheers!
Ralfy time for a Q&A video!
If you don’t stop, take a full breath, notice the sweat on the wine bottle…you missed it. Life.
Keep an open heart, an open mind, and if theres a nice dram or good food, open mouth 😊 Cheers 🥃 (my next pour will certainly have the sound of the bagpipes in my ears)
About your comment on wódka, i have to admit I admire the work that some polish distilleries put into making outstanding wodkas. Some of them are shockingly good quality, pure cleaned, polished (haha) alcohol but yet so charming. I would say wódka is more about the texture and the mouth feel than the taste. (except for cask matured, or "burnt" (palona) wódka which has a subtle extra flavor)
Thank you for sharing your opinions for all these years and opening debates about whisky and philosophy.
Cheers Ralfy
There are wódka from the wooden cask as well, they are better for tastings than pure 'czysta' one's 😁
No tak mordo, that's what mentioned ;)
I'm thinking of Korona Polska, cask matured. Delicious bottle!
Cheers to you. ...
"Ralfy in Amalfi" ...woulda been a great episode!
And breathe😃😃
ralfy, really enjoyed this "trip" but you left out Finn McCool and Benandonner at the beginning.
You have turned into Pavlov ! Food does the same thing .Food alcohol is an experience .The whole neighbourhood new when my mom was making sauce and it was a battle as to who's mom made the better sauce ,who's dad made the better wine or sausages and salami or who baked the best bread and who made the best grappa .
Pride in quality not quantity .I grew up being spoiled when it comes to good food .You can eat great food but the social experience is horrible or you can have a medeocre meal that just blows you away because you are having a good time with friends and family
One of the best show so far. I
Clairin is the same......the whole room is filled with the aroma of this rum from Haiti.
Well Ralfy, next time you go exploring, should you find yourself in Chicago, the first drink is on me.
He sure does make a whisky drinker feel good about themselves doesn't he.
Would you remind us again in the next extras why it is that we should leave a dram out for the Wee Folk?
Hi Ralphy, my Sons bought me a new Canadian whiskey 18 yo JP Wisers, I wanted to see if you have reviewed this whiskey but didn’t know where to start to look for the review, do you have a search facility to do exactly that, search for reviewed whiskey’s
Thanks
Al

My Malt Mention - My Malty Masturmaltsters
. . . now on the M-mention List, thanks !
Hi Ralfy, what has been your highest Malt mark. I’m just at the beginning of my Malt Journey the highest I’ve seen on your videos so far has been 93.
😀👍
Is your next book coming out next year or sooner 🤔 please
. . . December.
Yep, the basic recipe for a life based on the real quality of one's own experience (which you don't need riches for), not the perceived quality in the eyes of others (which the rich spend a lot of money for). Corinthians 1:13 rephrased: If I give all I possess to the distillers and give over my body to drunkenness that I may boast, but do not have taste, I gain nothing.
Give my regards to the selkies, they'll need a dram when coming out of the sea.
Sorry Spelling Ralfy 🥺🥺
Sorry Ralfy but neither water or fire are elements and your referring to alcohol’s magical properties has my alarm bells going off! Wasn’t it you who said alcohol is a narcotic? I worry about you Ralfy!
Don't believe I can likewise fully condemn those who take a casual view of the alcohol they drink, as being completely void of quality in all aspects of their lives. That is just too narrow and bitter a view.
"... I knew to recognize quality ... however it is presented". Great. Can you get off all your marketing bs now?
