  • Here's how the rest of my spring break went! I got to explore the Sydney Olympic Park, went to Hyde park, saw St. Mary's Cathedral, then headed back to Wollongong and drove an Australian car for the first time! Overall a pretty good way to wrap up my week off!

My great, great, great grandparents where married at St Mary’s Cathedral when they immigrated from Ireland in the 1800’s. interestingly their marriage certificate shows 2 X marks where you sign so they obviously couldn’t read or write.

Your initial comments about Sydney Olympic Park not being 'celebrated' are interesting. It was always built with the intention that it would be an ongoing and useful facility with a life of its own for decades if not centuries afterwards. So many Olympic facilities worldwide have declined afterwards, sometimes even being left abandoned, after the main event. Ironically, you are standing in front of the sea of poles which commemorate the name of every unpaid volunteer (about 74,000 of them) who helped make the Sydney Olympics so memorable, but seem unaware of their significance.

Oh wow, I actually had no idea what they were. I saw the names on the poles but didn’t know what they were for. I didn’t see a sign saying anything about it. That’s actually really cool though. Thank you for letting me know. I never want to be that person who is filming or posting something in an inappropriate place, but sometimes I just don’t know. So thank you for the heads up. I also get the functionality of it too and think that’s really smart. I’ve just kinda seen more preserved/ tourist attractions in other Olympic towns as well while they still seem to be functional today too, which is why I was a bit surprised!

The indicator controls are on the window side of the car, as the gear shift was in the centre of the car.
You don't need to turn your wipers on and off quickly, so they are mounted in the centre of the car too.

Accor stadium (which you are in front of) was the main Olympic Stadium but is now used for other sports (rugby league, union, soccer etc..). Next to it is Qudos Bank Arena, which is used for indoor sports like basketball and the occasional UFC event, but these day it is mostly used for concerts. The neighbouring suburb of Newington was the athletics village which has since been converted to residential apartments. Other than that there's really not much to see out there 😂

Aussie here, regarding the handbrake your friend is correct. You'd fail your driving test if you didn't use the handbrake as it's considered part of making the vehicle "secure". In NSW it's actually illegal to park a vehicle without the handbrake engaged, although I doubt anyone has ever gotten in trouble for it.

Looks like you have an Aussie friend teaching you the ropes of driving RHD which would have been fun. Noticed on YT vlog "Lea Nez" has arrived a few months ago also from NY to Sydney to study at Sydney Uni & working p/time & would be worth you checking out & making contact with her. Yeah the early morning jogs/swimming etc is a great routine to get into

Laura just a small tip for dealing with pesky spots. Buy a small tub of "Sudocrem" from your local chemist (used on babies for nappy rash etc ) and use it as a light mask on your whole face at night before you go to bed "every night" as it absorbs into your skin . It is cheap & amazing stuff for your skin. It really works - been using it for many yrs
