Very clever approach. Love the final effect! Perhaps the tallest single segments I've seen for a woodturning project.
That looks great! Do you have to clamp the segments individually for the joints to hold during turning? I would probably have used a 2 or 3 strap clamps and had it explode during turning.
Dana, No I did not have to clamp separately. However gluing the vertical segments end grain to end grain was a concern. In addition to its aesthetics, the walnut ring on top was used to support and secure the vertical segments, also having the sacrificial ring on the bottom during most of the turning process would Insure that everything stay together.
