I am working on a composting chicken yard, and I am getting a lot of flies. Do you have that issue / how do you deal with it? I have about 8-10 inches of chips.

Yeah flies are an issue on the homestead where ever livestock are present. I use a few fly traps to help reduce the fly load which are really effective. Frequently cleanings of bedding can help.

If I may ask, how did you cultivate the relationship to procure food waste or scraps like the fruits and vegetables? I have tried here in upstate South Carolina with many grocery chains and most give me an excuse of government regulations won't allow it because they get fined, people eat old foods and it creates liability issues, blah, blah, blah... I have video and provide proof that I am looking to only give these items to my chickens and set up a system like yours to be able to make compost and feed the chickens. Our garden only provides so much in terms of food for our needs and preserving it so having left over for the chickens is somewhat harder to come by. Any advice?

I totally understand your situation. It is highly competitive for establishing relationships in this regard and don't mean to suggest it is easy but it really takes persistence and a little creativity. Don't overlook schools, restaurants, food banks etc. It has become increasingly difficult due to a variety of reasons but each entity has discretion on how and what they do with their expired food. I made a video addressing some things to consider in trying to get free food. ua-cam.com/video/AFgCxkFuc7Y/v-deo.html
I hope this help spur some ideas. Good luck my friend!

Eric, you had me both worried and excited at the prospect of having "too much compost". We keep expanding the amount of compost as well as the number of beds we have but seem to use every bit of compost we have. I have stopped using fertilizer on the lawn and instead use whatever is left from our compost figuring if we ever have to turn the lawn into one massive garden the soil will be at least better than it is now. Now if could only find someone who would let me borrow their chickens every once and a while.

Haha there might never be too much! It sounds like you are going to have a pretty amazing lawn conversion. 👌
