Just make sure your T&C’s are clear, you cannot warranty a used gearbox or other used parts… you should only warranty your work. The client choosing the saving in cost on the job for using used parts compared to new parts has to be the risk the client bares…. Unless you fully dismantle, clean, inspect and build the item and then charge a accordingly for this service and give a limited warranty. Clarity is your friend… written, large text/legible T&C’s, gone through step by step with the customer up front so they know what risk they are accepting and the choice they are making.
My policy was if a customer wanted to put second hand anything in a car the customer bought it and delivered it to me. If they wanted it fitted as is then pay me and take the vehicle away with no warranty on parts only on labour. If we overhauled the part then warranties apply. When cast iron blocks and heads were involved we refused to remove the head unless the customer agreed to a radiator clean or re-core as required after inspection.

Sorry Rick, but it absolutely does work like that. I once (only once) sourced a used engine for a customer which obviously went wrong because the seller didn't tell the truth. I had to rebuild it etc at my expense, but never again. Honestly you don't need to be doing your customers a favour. Would they do you a favour in return and pay for the second attempt because they dont want to disappoint you? It's your business and your livelihood, favours are £10 here and there, or a free bit of labour not full gearbox rebuilds! The cars you work on are all expensive luxury toys that most can't afford - the owners can! Love the channel, keep up the good work.
Don't sell used gearboxes unless the client expressly agrees to no warranty. Someone pays the price. If the customer is being cheap, and doesn't want to buy a new or a built fully warranted gearbox why the f*** are you paying out of pocket to fix a used gearbox that shouldn't have been warranted in the first place.
@@robingchan Doesn't matter, it's a used gearbox. It's a different story if it's a rebuilt gearbox. But a used box shouldn't be warranted through the shop. It could be warranted through the salvage yard... But that won't cover labor for the rework. At the end of the day THE customer needs to be aware of the risks with a cheap USED gearbox.

So what’s causing the clutch failure that tanks the gear box? Are these turbo cars or high mileage? I’m worried now as mines at 55000 miles. I have never used launch control but do launch her 90% quite a lot. What’s the thought on pre emotive clutch replacement? £5k clutch is better than a 30k gear box??

Question for Rik. Lambo. Sit there reving the nuts off for fans to see. Alternators keep failing. As DDE are experiencing. Also great to see you have now surpassed the 40,000 subs & climbing. Do shorts help as I have not done them yet. Steve.
Second hand parts come with zero warranty. If the customer wants to cheaply do the fix the responsibility lies with the customer. Fair enough work out a cheaper labour price if anything goes wrong but liability should be on the customer solely. If new gearbox fitted the liability is with installer but will be backed by manufacturer 🤷🏻♂️
@@senco981 I totally agree. But 2 for 2 gearboxes proves the point. No good going out of business to make friends? Explain the situation clearly and let them make a decision ?
@@stephenmattinson6892he has been doing the v10 stuff for years and I presume that that’s the method Ricky takes to keep costs low for the customer as he said it’s 35k just for the box brand new that’s excluding fitting and consumables so on a 70k R8 nobody would want to pay that as it’s more than half the value of the car.
