- Keir Starmer has said that he is going to have to make tough decisions and "make them early" in his first news conference as UK prime minister.
He said that prisons are an obvious example of an issue that needs to be addressed, "where other parts of the system are broken".
On Saturday he chaired a cabinet meeting for the first time in Downing Street in which he said a "huge amount of work" was under way.

@@an-albumhole4400to be fair you need at lay at least some, if not 2/3 of the blame on the people that crashed the world economy, Brown really didn’t have a lot of choice in what he did, and equally it can be argued neither did Cameron/Osbourne with regards austerity (although the extent and proportionality of it can be) as they had to react to that action. Roles reversed the same or at least very similar chain of events would have happened. Or the country would have imploded with loss of homes, business, pensions, savings… i’m no huge supporter of either and am sometimes swing right/left centrist with my views.

starmer doesn't have the same charisma as other politicians, and his speeches aren't going to dazzle anyone, but he is a man who started from the bottom and worked hard to reach the top. we may be pleasantly surprised by his achievements as PM over the next 5 years.

I'm no starmer fan...not at all, but have to applaud the appointment of James Timpson as Minister for Prisons. Someone who is brave, bold and actually knows/has experience in what he's being appointed to do. I know James will change things- that what he does, but have no clue what other strategies they are going to employ as government...literally not telling us anything definitive yet.
If you look at most of his cabinet appointments, they're people with actual background knowledge of the area they're working in.
Not like the Tories who just filled positions with whoever was ideologically aligned to their leader.
I mean, the deputy PM isn't ideologically aligned to Keir. This is how politics should be done.

@Pinopley you should know then, that NONE of the locksmiths trained by Timpson have criminal records at all, and cutting keys in branch (yes I have cut thousands as your father has) does not enable anyone to pick a lock, or pose any threat to security at all.

He was the architect of awful uk management of covid , many people died because of his mismanagement , many people never recovered from covid thanks to valance . covid enquiry will recommend he and is cabinet office cronies were culpable for many U.K. deaths and loss of thousands of businesses , hence he will need to go when starmer reads the report. already starmer is playing up to the evil rotten civil service that is responsible for broken U.K. this means nothing will happen in the next 60 months .

5 years isn't long to clean up 14 years of complete incompetence and mismanagement. His main plan seems to be to change the planning system so that we can actually build the housing and infrastructure to support business expansion and grow the economy after 14 years of stagnation. That will take time - I hope we give it to him instead of voting in more populists who promise the world and deliver nothing.
