When I first heard this song it was a hilarious. Then I lost a friend to cancer and this song took on a whole new meaning and helped me cope in a way I don't think was ever intended. And then another friend overcame cancer and this song took on a third meaning that was also probably never intended. Everytime I listen to it I remember all the great memories of the friend I lost, and the memories to come with the friend I still have, and the adventure of all relationships. Thank you Tim.
this is genuinely my favourite love song ever. people think its a horrible song but if you listen carefully to the words and feel the emotion in the song, you start to realise its a meaningful song and that Tim Minchin is one of the most sensitive singer/songwriters there has ever been.
I love the fact that the 2010/2011 (or even 2009) uploads seem to be way more passionate, personal, and heartfelt than the later ones. It's always been so strange, even surreal, to hear people's _laughter_ when he's performing this particular song
Love the sparser version. Could you be showing greater confidence with your singing? You have a truly unique voice and you're one of the more recognisable ones around today (as you have been for a decade). Bravo!
I had Maligna Melanoma, and I that may be a reason why I think this song is perfect. It's just it, you can't tell when a relationship is love or friendship... It is simply there, it was there until you say, do you want to be my girlfriend? It's an analogy to going to the doctor and he told you, well, you have cancer. It was there but know you know it, now is real for you.
Wanted to use this as the first dance song at my wedding, but my wife wouldn't stand for it. So we used Drowned instead. Now she's regretting not using my first choice =P
Is it kind of sad this is my Favorite love song ... oh well theres never going to be a better one around in my opinion :) nothing will ever beat Tim Minchin :D
I wanted to request "If I didn't have you" during the middle of the reception and have it dedicated a song from me to my wife. Her side of the family wouldn't have appreciated it that much so we decided not to. I thought it was a wonderful way to introduce everyone to the type of humor and realistic relationship me and my wife share. Got my wife to agree to drowned by having her dance to it, maybe you should try dancing together with them all and see which you like best
@63kittykat Love's hardly ever painless, especially if it doesn't come to any happiness in the end, and I think the reference makes perfect sense. I can fully understand how people could be offended, but if you're going to have a go at song lyrics, this is not the one to start. And I'm sorry, but calling something terrible when it's obviously very heartfelt and done by an amazingly talented person, that's just not nice.
my fiance and I are having a similar issue. He doesn't care much, as he says, since Im the bride i get the say. Will probably go for this one though as it may be danced to slightly more easily. Then we shall break it down to funky town but medoly-ing it with something awesome. This part hasnt been decided yet either. Maybe If I Didn't Have You?
"You grew on me like a tumor. You spread in me like melanoma." Uh . . . Ethel are you sure this is 'Our Song' ? I thought it was more romantic . . . you know . . . like Mooooooooooon Riiiiiiiiiiveeeeeeer Wiiiiiiideeer Thaaan A Miiiileeeee . . . or was it Roses are Red Violets are Purple I love you like Maple Surple? . . . . I just don't remember it being so um graphic . . . Ethel ? Ethel!
SevenEllen listen to not perfect and white wine in the sun then.tell me whats funny about those, tim has comic songs but powerfull songs as well, just because you are a comedian doesn´t mean u have to be funny all the time, u can also be deep.
you grew on me like a tumour? friggin awfully painfully bad - reference to cancer and love doesnt make any sense at all. misguided- innapropiate and terrible!

I kinda miss hearing how the crowd starts off laughing then slowly goes silent as they realise how incredible these similes and metaphors are.

This is actually a sweet song.
I really like his songs, you should think about making an edited an better song of "so long". That is still my favourite as a californication fan :)
