Thomas I really appreciated your 'off the cuff' discussion of driving technique in any modern EV. I have experienced mild car-sickness in both the passenger seat and the rear seat when an unaware driver was driving an EV (both times a Tesla) because of the instant power response and the deceleration from regenerative braking. As a long-time hybrid and EV driver, I have said that people need special instruction on how to drive these vehicles to maximize economy and smoothness. Spending months in Southern California I can tell you that most drivers have a driving technique that is not only wasteful in an ICE car but nausea-inducing in an EV. Accelerator, brake, accelerator, brake, on, off, on, off. You should consider doing a special segment just on how to drive an EV efficiently and smoothly. You're the expert. Cheers!
Good point, but I think that a manufacturer should design a car such way it does not invite these driving styles. Not all EV’s trigger this, so its possible.
I'm getting the IONIQ 5 tomorrow and it's really great to have seen your video. This gives me some tips on how I should drive this vehicle. Very much appreciated.

exactly, German manufacturers are old fashioned, especially the VW-group brands. Look at Audi and BMW, man, they only update their cars, totally afraid that the new models won't be liked by the customer.
@@Jupiter8Boy64 ???? the Ioniq simply looks aged...like from back to future coming from the 1980th...the Lancia Delta is looking same...this is simply good old italian design from the 80th ...whereas the ID4 has a new design. If you like this new design is a different question.
@@Jupiter8Boy64 BMW only update and are afraid of change? Have you seen their latest crop of cars. Also the established Germans have more to lose if they make a bad decision. However the car has none of the elegance of a Giugiaro design and in the flesh it looks bloated and a bit squat. Great review of a ground breaking car. I certainly love the look of the exterior and particularly love the interior, especially the cream colour. Why are other manufacturers still insisting on pure black interiors? They look like coffins.
The only colour you can get with a Hyundai in uk is black apart from this model for example. However lots of other manufacturers offer light interiors. Volvo, Mercedes, Honda, Mazda, etc etc.
@@MaximilianvonPinneberg It is true that some manufacturers offer lighter colours, but they are very limited to the high end series. Hyundai do offer other colours. I have the light blue in my Hyundai Ioniq.

Hopefully the more powerful N version coming in 2022 will fix these and also have alcantara seats, then it will be my ideal EV in my budget.
Nice review as always, Thomas! Looking forward to the EV6 review! By the way, the accumulated energy generation from the solar panel was 14 kWh, not 0.014 kWh (it can be confusing with comma vs period used as decimal vs 1000 separator in English). Still not a ton of energy but could be relevant for those living in generally sunny areas.
@@abraxastulammo9940 I guess you calculated with 22.8kWh/km and 4137.5km? Yeah, that makes sense, and I would guess that this car has probably been used mainly during October-December, which means low solar radiation = low power generation and low temperatures = high consumption, and probably for quite a few longer test drives = little time for recharging with solar. During the summer in e.g. southern California I would not be surprised if commuters doing 10-20 km per day with outdoor parking could do 50% of their daily driving with solar. But, curious how air conditioning would impact that figure, as leaving the car in the sun would naturally lead to higher air conditioning loads...
I was really surprised when I saw the Ioniq 5 at a car dealer, this is one of the VERY few cars that actually look like a radical concept. Been enjoying the "Off the lights, empty rear view mirror" thing in my beloved Z3 for 20 years. I know it would probably pale in comparison to a modern AWD EV, but it's still good enough for me.
in Germany they use a comma and not a period to separate decimals, so we don't know how much time it has been out and about, but let's do math. They say the solar roof will add 1240 miles per year to the car which is the estimate I found when searching online. So if you say you can get 259 miles on 77.4 KWh battery (awd), that means it would take the whole year to get 347KWh. If you divide that by 12 you get 28.96 KWh per month (this will be higher in the summer and lower in the winter). So that car would need to be outside for the last month roughly of November to get 19KWh. So it is possible it's 19KWh, which is very cool for a car
I thought that your video gives a proper review of this vehicle. Best features for me would be the looks, comfort and price. It's a real competitor in the EV market. It won't hurt Tesla sales a bit but just adds more choices to EV buyers. I've enjoyed my 3 LR for a year now and it's faster with superior software and is more efficient. The supercharger network takes it to another level of convenience. Instead of going to the gas station and getting gouged by big oil, I now do my food shopping while getting charged. I never had a car whose auto functions are so in sync with what I wish. The only disappointment is I don't get to use it enough cause I'm retired and life has slowed down considerably.
You don't need to go to the menu for changing the heated seats. Just press "Warmer" and you get to that menu directly. Same as with wanted to change climate. Just press "Climate". And also that heated/ventilated seats and heated steering wheel can be auto on in cold/hot weather.
@@autogefuehl Indeed. But now there is basically no cars left with hard buttons for that. Got it on the little Honda E. Both hard buttons for climate and heated steering wheel. Love my Ioniq 5 but the worst of all is the lack of a rear windscreen wiper.

Thank you! I know that probably you are very busy answering to all messages from your viewers, but will really appreciate if you have a minute in helping taking a buying decision. I’m currently driving a 2020 Ioniq Ev, is a great car, however, being 1,89 m tall I have no headroom and driving position is too low for me. As previously mentioned I’m debating between the Ioniq 5 and ID4, however, in my area ( Toronto, Canada) you cannot test any of this two cars or even to see it in a showroom, so only option is to place a factory order for any of this two cars and wait probably at least 6-8 months. In your opinion between this two cars witch one can give more headroom for my height 1,89m and a higher driving position, considering price wise are similar. Thanks again!
Bravo, Thomas!! Looks like my '86 Scirocco! I loved that car. I put 300k kms on it and sold it in two days when it came time to sell it. ?: How long until the battery gets to the optimum temperature for DC charging max KW??
Great review as always, it`s a pleasure to follow - i have a Personal question - what`s the brand of your wristwatch ? Looking forward to your next video - best regards from Copenhagen
Excellent video, as usual. You have good information and you always look good too, so when the review gets a bit too auto geek for me, I focus on those beautiful eyes, zum beispiel.
@@autogefuehl You have a standing invitation to come visit Aiken in the Sand Hills of South Carolina! Here the focus is on horses and a very slow pace of living for retired guys like me. However, one of my neighbors has a Tesla. I think the nearest Tesla charging stations are 12 miles west in Augusta, GA. I'm thinking Mustang Mach E.
I thought it was only me. I agree with the Tesla autopilot. I drove a model 3 round trip Las Vegas to LA and it works great. I drove also a model 3 round trip Frankfurt to Berlin and it was terrible. The system couldn't decide what to do. In the end I just used it to follow the car in front of me. I somehow get the feeling Tesla calibrates the system differently for the EU. I think this has to do with the higher average speeds and sharper corners with those speeds. In the US interstates they are more straight and slower average speeds.
Tesla has actually been forced to nerf its autopilot in Europe due to EU legislation. If I remember correctly this happened in mid-2019. I had my model 3 before this and I felt the difference right away. The capabilities are still there in the software, and we're supposed to see updated legislation in 2022, but who knows with these things... Ghost braking is another matter, but for me this improved greatly a year or two ago. I haven't driven the new cars without radar though, so could be that that's what some reviewers of the Y are experiencing.
23:29 into the video: the comment about how simply awful the Tesla Auto Pilot system is also valid in Canada, at least in British Columbia. It's a complete waste of money unless you live in an urban environment broadly similar to southern California, I regret ever spending the money on it. At this time in my opinion - and I've been driving for 51 years in North America and Europe - Tesla's "Self Driving" and "Auto Pilot" should be banned outside of the US.
I'll take second.😁 Nope, sorry. Mustang Mach-e / GT anyday rather than that for me. "Kids.....have something against your white seats"... 😂🤣👍 Thanks Thomas, objective as always.
Enjoy your analysis, and approach, good fun, nice vehicle, Hyundai is doing a good job with Kona and Ioniq 5, some reviewers call the Ioniq 5 a boat. Does it have heat pump, battery pre- heating? We are old and long retired, maybe a boat is just what we need!
For a 1,89 m tall guy like me looking for more headroom/ legroom and a higher driving position, between id4 an i5 what do you suggest may be better, considering that both price wise are similar. I know you tested both this vehicles and unfortunately in my area in Canada at this moment due to lack of availability you cannot test drive ,only to factory order and wait 6-8 months eventually. Thanks again!
How did you achieve the full screen on Android Auto? Around 9:02 on video. Here in Holland we have a big square Adroid Auto splash permanently on the right side. Takes up about 1/3 of the screen...
Correct, it is nearly 20 kWh in total. Depends really on the country you live in if solar roof makes sense. Most likely in italy, spain, greece and so on it does make sense. Great Britain for example it does not. Panoramic roof would be a better option then or just save the money.
Hmm interesting, I am not that sure. The vehicle doesn’t have much on the clock, i cant believe its 20 kWh. Maybe another Ioniq 5 owner can help if thats 20 kWh or 0.020 kWh?
I think Ioniq5 and EV6 are both good EV's. Exterior wise KIA EV6 is the more coventional looking. Most likely conservative people will like it more. Ioniq5 is retro style, at same time futuristic looking with more open interior space. If you want more the spaceship design where you are integrated in your command central rather than open loft design then go for EV6. It's not better or worse, just a matter of personal preference.
Curious, any comment on the lack of rear window wiper? Living in Canada, I worry that the rear window will get covered in dirt during winter driving....
One of the best reviews. Unfortunately, the I5 is in Germany not available with animal free seats, if higher trim levels are choosen. It's a shame. We will probably cancel our order.
Thank you for that advice, Thomas. Kia does a good job. The EV6 is a nice car and these microfibre seats look really nice. I really adore the design of the I5. It's a dilemma.
I had a test drive in this car. We almost ordered one, the only problem was the boot space. Unfortunately for a family with two young children, the size of the trunk was unfortunately too big of a trade off.
How much do you take with you? I come from a family of four and we always managed to go on long trips with boots like in the 3 series (2014 model) or Ford Mondeo. Heck even a Volvo V40 did the job, barely. The Ioniq 5 even seems like overkill. I have got an EV6, and it feels like it has so much space that I'll never use.
@@autogefuehl Ha Ha silly Kia. They are not very politically correct. The world is one no matter what language we speak. Great reviews you do. Thank you.
How would you compare the lane-keep assist feature to that in, say, a late-model Passat? I drove one a couple months ago and was appalled at how nervous and touchy it was, especially when encountering lanes merging into one another or extra wide lanes that narrowed. Great review, thanks for the insights.
Same for me...driving a Passat GTE for five years now...after driving a Ioniq 5 I decided to buy a GTE again. All those new EVs (drove ID4, Polestar 2, Enyaq, too) are far away from the driving quality of this good "old" Passat.
"Literally every review and buyer hates them". Ah I see you have spoken with billions of people and have pin-pointed each of their opinions. More and more people (colleagues, friends, Discord etc.) I speak with about this capacitive BS tell me that A: "It is annoying", B: neutral, C: "They keep the dash cleaner and more futuristic" and D: "I didn't use most of the buttons in "old" cars anyway, so I don't care about it at all/think it is good we have less buttons". It is really not black/white.
Great review, thank you. I am torn between the RWD version and the ENYAQ iV, both I have taken short test drives in, preferred the Ioniq, however I can spend between 4-6 hours driving some days, so which do you think has the most comfortable/supportive seats? Dankeschön 👍

Solar roof probably shows 19731 Wh (19kWh). It uses comma to visually separate thousands, it is not decimal.
Yeah that was tricky
in Germany they use a comma and not a period to separate decimals, so we don't know how much time it has been out and about, but let's do math.
@@HackAttackx10 Money is better invested by putting solar power on your roof (or at least balcony).
Is that a B-class passing us? Yes, welcome to Germany, guys. 🤣
😄
I thought that your video gives a proper review of this vehicle.
Best features for me would be the looks, comfort and price. It's a real competitor in the EV market. It won't hurt Tesla sales a bit but just adds more choices to EV buyers.
I've enjoyed my 3 LR for a year now and it's faster with superior software and is more efficient. The supercharger network takes it to another level of convenience. Instead of going to the gas station and getting gouged by big oil, I now do my food shopping while getting charged.
I never had a car whose auto functions are so in sync with what I wish.
The only disappointment is I don't get to use it enough cause I'm retired and life has slowed down considerably.
thanks for the feedback!
Very cool car!!
Good job Thomas👍
😎✌️
Thanks for the review, I'm looking forward to seeing your review of the Megane E-Tech electric, if it will come

You don't need to go to the menu for changing the heated seats.
Just press "Warmer" and you get to that menu directly. Same as with wanted to change climate.
Just press "Climate".
And also that heated/ventilated seats and heated steering wheel can be auto on in cold/hot weather.
Yes with "Warmer" it is quicker, but you still have to control it in the infotainment screen
@@autogefuehl Indeed.
But now there is basically no cars left with hard buttons for that.
Got it on the little Honda E. Both hard buttons for climate and heated steering wheel.
Love my Ioniq 5 but the worst of all is the lack of a rear windscreen wiper.

@@autogefuehl great.
Excellent review as always! In my opinion you are having one of the best reviews in this field! I’m debating in placing a factory order either for this Ioniq 5 or ID4, what’s your advise? Thanks, Stefi

I like the ID4 (exterior design) but the interiors and infotaiment systems on the new VW cars are to be avoided.
Great video! 😊
thanks! Also tune in to the EV6: ua-cam.com/video/1rpS311emAQ/v-deo.html

Thank you for the review.
I can’t believe I slept on this car company because man… they are going to take over one day. (New Toyota)
Amazing car
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for the review, which EV do you consider is the best at this time in the market? (in similar category)

Maybe Tesla ADAS system is usage to you because it is designed to learn from user feedback to eventually go fully autonomous.
retro and modern in one car, cool
Love it!
Taking another look at this car after waiting 5 years for the ID Buzz and now finding out it will cost a lot and have sub-par range
It's the best designed EV for the money.

Thanks! Heat pump yes, but preheating no, i talked about this issue in the review!
In comparison with model 3 & Y, which one is better especially in terms of cabin noise and smoothness of suspension?
Suspension? This here
For a 1,89 m tall guy like me looking for more headroom/ legroom and a higher driving position, between id4 an i5 what do you suggest may be better, considering that both price wise are similar. I know you tested both this vehicles and unfortunately in my area in Canada at this moment due to lack of availability you cannot test drive ,only to factory order and wait 6-8 months eventually. Thanks again!
The perfect Car for Car Cinema with this seats 😅
ID.Life style B-)
09:36 Are you sure about the solar energy amount? It seems to have comma as a thousand separator, not for decimal.
yep it is a thousand separator, missed that
How did you achieve the full screen on Android Auto? Around 9:02 on video. Here in Holland we have a big square Adroid Auto splash permanently on the right side. Takes up about 1/3 of the screen...
Great review. Hyundai should have rebranded this can as Ioniq brand and removed all Hayundai badges.
Maybe it's because of the youtube compression but there is a huge syncronization problem within the video.
Hey Thomas, I believe that's 19.731 kWh. In Korea, the decimal separator is a point, not a comma.
Correct, it is nearly 20 kWh in total. Depends really on the country you live in if solar roof makes sense. Most likely in italy, spain, greece and so on it does make sense. Great Britain for example it does not. Panoramic roof would be a better option then or just save the money.
@@FreeMountainTom it's a shame that I didn't have a solar roof option when I ordered my EV6. It's a pretty cool feature!
@@peteyification...
You're better off with the EV6, the Ioniq 5 solar roof is an overrated gimmick!
Love the German autobahn. But if we had that here in the uk there would be major accidents every day. 🤣
Curious, any comment on the lack of rear window wiper? Living in Canada, I worry that the rear window will get covered in dirt during winter driving....
yeah it can be a problem
Use the rear camera.
wanting 360 cam and panoramic roof will cost additional 12K€... it's ridiculous.
Around 12:00 onwards, the video doesn't tally with the description.
Have you any plans to review the 5N?
One of the best reviews. Unfortunately, the I5 is in Germany not available with animal free seats, if higher trim levels are choosen. It's a shame. We will probably cancel our order.
Cheers! Yes indeed. Either base fabric seats or go for the EV6: ua-cam.com/video/1rpS311emAQ/v-deo.html
Thank you for that advice, Thomas. Kia does a good job. The EV6 is a nice car and these microfibre seats look really nice. I really adore the design of the I5. It's a dilemma.
yeah true.
Please give the width including the mirrors as it would be nice if they will fit in our garages

Thomas, not a fan of the 'MUSTANG' But l dig the Love Child of the Golf Gti and CYBERTRUCK_____iONIC 5
Beautiful Car! Far nicer than Teslas.
Great review, trying to get one in the US. Do the rear seats fold flat?
Is the lane assist a deal breaker?
I had a test drive in this car. We almost ordered one, the only problem was the boot space. Unfortunately for a family with two young children, the size of the trunk was unfortunately too big of a trade off.
You can move the rear seats forward though. The kids won't mind with the huge leg room available, and you have a larger boot.
Thanks for this feedback. I got this impression from watching a bunch of videos.
Yes but by moving the seat forward you get a gap. Where things might fall in. Also, you don’t get any cover over this small gap.
You should watch Björn Nyland banana box test of this car. It's bigger than it looks.
When you review ev6 please

Idk why they keep doing capacitive buttons, literrally every review and every buyer hates them. Just vote with your wallet and don't buy these cars
Because they are cheaper.
