I remember the pre race interview when Alonso just straight up said "From now on I don't consider F1 a sport anymore". If he said that today, the FIA would force him to start in Mars for the Dutch Grand Prix. F1 is just not going to be the same without him.
It would be good but its also very well documented. Beauty of Aidan's videos are the level of detail he gives to events that weren't well documented at the time IMO
There's definitely a lot more to that season than "Lauda would have been champion if he hadn't crashed at the Nurburgring' which seems to be the most common comment you see about 1976
Hard to argue against it though? They weren't exactly equal rivals. Either way its a very well documented season. Arguably it's been done to death which is the opposite to the season that came 30 years later and is somehow almost forgotten about.
@@samupton7654 Lauda and Hunt were very much equal rivals in the 76 season. Despite Lauda's crash, the subsequent races he missed and walking away at Fuji they both finished the same number of races that season - unrelliablity, DNF's and mechanical failures (which Lauda's crash was) were a bigger part of the sport back then.
I remember Patrick Head of Williams saying the penalty was decided by someone with rocks in their head, or something to that effect. Just a bizarre circumstance all round.
If I'm not mistaken, that's happened with multiple F1 drivers at the time and before it (and just like with Lauda and Hunt, they too had some intriguing at odds dynamics).
Niki was a bit more of "a lad" than he appeared when doing his job. He had a great sense of humour, and Hunt apparently thought a great deal about him. Don't assume that everyone is like they are at work (applies to anyone!), outside they can be completely different. I'm not saying that Niki was as wild as James, but he wasn't prim and proper 😂
I think another thing that long played into the perception of Ferrari bias was the whole payouts situation with Ferrari getting more due to their legacy. Everything for years had looked like FIA bias towards Ferrari, especially when they were winning championships
A conspiracy theory that I have is that Vettel’s first lap puncture at Abu Dhabi 2011 was “for the show” he’d been winning almost as much as Max is now. The championship was wrapped up, penultimate race of the season, and it was a very odd puncture that Pirelli said was not a tyre failure and didn’t look like debris damage either. Made a good talking point and meant someone else won a race that otherwise Vettel would have “boringly” dominated. As an aside I reckon that if Red Bull had dominated as much as this during the Bernie years there would have been some interesting penalties or mid season rule changes “for the show” too.
Bernie famously said "Ferrari winning is good for business" yet he and the FIA came up with that bullshit one tyre rule specifically to stop Ferrari from dominating as TV ratings were plummeting in 2004 due to Schumacher winning everything.
Alonso’s had an amazing amount of bad luck when it comes to penalties, rivals not being penalized in incidents that affected him and rule changes that came after they hurt him.
Oh God another football-motor race crossover. Alfie in HITC Seven also talked about Juventus-Agnelli relation... As well as Briatore's takeover of QPR.
Wasn't the QPR takeover banned by the FA, or his ownership of it. I have some vague memory of there being a big row over him being "unfit" to own a football team, especially a top tier one as they were back then. No idea what league they're in now and couldn't care less about it, but back then it was a team worth owning. If a team is ever worth that amount of money and trouble!
There's also the fact that Monza had been resurfaced just before that race - without Michelin being informed. To quote Mark Webber: "Do you mean to tell me that you can resurface a track in Italy without Ferrari knowing about it? Michelin turned up with their compounds and bang. It’s a small thing, but at the same time it’s massive." Lotta shenanigans going on that year.
This season was also a joke because they banned Renault’s mass damper system mid season. The shift in results towards Schumachers favour at this exact moment from the USA onwards is ridiculous. I was going to argue with that, but after thinking about it, in the 2.4L era the title was decided at the final round 5 out of 8 seasons. That feels completely mad after the last decade of F1.
