Newcastle's squad is clearly good enough to get results against top teams, middle teams, struggling teams, otherwise they would be nowhere near 5th. If any other team lost at home to Fulham (or equivalent teams) there could be a multiplicity of reasons not involving improving the first team - most first teams in the division are nowhere near the standard of Newcastle's. That said two 34 year old centre half's great lads but no pace, and that's killing us, traore had Lewis on a plate most of the game, but i still think there was plenty of effort it just did not go for us today, happens sometimes, simple as.

Eddie has to understand when his team are getting complacent and set them up to start defensively and then play all out in the second half. The problem is that good managers don’t mind losing 1-0 at half time, they simply change tactics for the 2nd half. Bobby was a master of this. If the Guehi sale had gone through there would have been other measures taken to mitigate that, but probably not the sale of first team players. There's no reason they CAN'T spend Guehi money in January but there's a few reasons why it might be unwise. The players available in January are more limited and correspondingly more expensive, and there are 5 fewer months to mitigate it. Conversely not spending and getting all the expensive 2022/3 signings (including Isak) off the PSR books leaves the club in a much more flexible position in the summer window, which means they can go after bigger players that we've simply not been in a position to buy since our last spree.

We won't be able to attract bigger players if we don't get into Europe, and we would be at risk of losing one of our top players. There has to come a point where they are going to have to think "signing a handful of quality players is worth more than the 10 points we will get deducted" It's time to go for it, throw caution to the wind, sign the players we desperately need and well.... what will be will be
10 points usually a decider between UCL and no European football at all. Without UCL lure, it will be difficult to sign top players. We are skipping the foundation step in building depth. On paper, it should be sign great players then sell them for much bigger profit. For everyone sold, sign two equally promising to spread out the quality. Once you had that foundation you started to really sharpen the spear with super stars and such. The fact that we hit UCL much earlier than we should threw a wrench into the system quite a bit. Then again that’s only good on paper as the fans will never understand that.

I don’t enjoy our style of football anymore. It’s not sustainable and I don’t like how naive we are. Our style got exposed in champions league too. Football has moved on from managers like Howe and Dyche. Go back to low block & counter attack until we sign world class defenders. It’s sad but we just don’t have the players to dominate games. Biggest issue with us is clubs from 8th to 14th for example we just turn up expecting to win at times. Top 6 sides we put the graft in.
When Fulham were on top before they equalised, we should have changed it up rather than waiting until they equalise to then make changes

10 points usually a decider between UCL and no European football at all. Without UCL lure, it will be difficult to sign top players. We are skipping the foundation step in building depth. On paper, it should be sign great players then sell them for much bigger profit. For everyone sold, sign two equally promising to spread out the quality. Once you had that foundation you started to really sharpen the spear with super stars and such. The fact that we hit UCL much earlier than we should threw a wrench into the system quite a bit. Then again that’s only good on paper as the fans will never understand that.

This is what we do, we put together a couple of good runs in a season but usually we are just inconsistent and quite frankly, mentally weak and unprofessional.

But they don't play like that against Arsenal. We're unbeaten against teams above us in the Premier League in all 6 games. We don't lose to the bottom 6 either. It's 6th (Chelsea) to 15th (West Ham) where the players switch off. They are always up for the glamour games.

end of the day the back up players that can come on after 60-75 minutes simply aint good enough and it isn't there fault that they are. Longstaff, Willock, Almiron (albeit has now left) just aint gonna cut it if we want top 4/5.
the problem is there for everyone to see and if not being able to get this issue sorted out means we lose out on CL then how does this convince our top players that this is a place worth staying at?
Rinse and repeat, cut and paste just won't cut it for a Champions League spot. I question the mentality to deliver when expectations are raised. It's a shame but this team is devoid of technical quality in terms of strength in depth. They play there best with no fear attitude, today was worse there are no excuses they have to own this loss.

Keith - why can't we make a loan signing? There MUST be someone out there who can bring quality on loan to our side. I know there are costs associated with loans, but surely things can't be that tight at the club. We can't allow this transfer window to close without making sure we sign someone to give us the best opportunity to bring a trophy home in 70 years. We really are on the cusp.

I don’t enjoy our style of football anymore. It’s not sustainable and I don’t like how naive we are. Our style got exposed in champions league too. Football has moved on from managers like Howe and Dyche. Go back to low block & counter attack until we sign world class defenders. It’s sad but we just don’t have the players to dominate games. Joelinton isn’t good enough now, not at elite level. Murphy will eventually fade as well.
Joelinton was poor, looked like he asked to be subbed. Should have been off and replaced with Miley or Longstaff. Willock has had a poor run of form, when he’s had a chance.

I don’t think we need to shit the bed at this point. I disagree about the atmosphere. First half was surprisingly alright. Second half was terrible, as bad as it has been in a poor season for atmosphere but maybe because the football was toilet.
Hopefully a few of those who care let that nonplussed second half cost them a bit of sleep. If we’d played 90 minutes looking interested, we’d have won.
