As someone who studied production and works in theatre it's kinda fun to watch someone (likely representative of most of the population) point at positions and call them funny (to me) names

If you have 7 lasers, you'll need one additional laser pointer, just to make it a power of 2.
No no no. You are doing it all wrong. The number of hirees must be a power of 2, but you should make sure the number of lasers is always prime.
7 is prime, but personally I also agree that powers of two is the way to go.

7 lasers is perfect, you only need 3 bits to count it. 1 more and you'd have to increase your space by a 3rd
