      The roar delay came from an old mix I made on Mixcloud for only MGM titles. I just put it in the description for people to check out.

    This is certainly in your wheelhouse. Those major label psych oddballs. I would certainly agree on the VU and happy to see Chrysalis in there. Indeed they have ties to my area though I believe they moved to nyc. But that record turns up here a lot for obvious reasons, and I do love it too. I have Puff and enjoy as well, including the first Ultimate Spinach, never got into that 2nd one though. And of course, Bobby Callender who I believe is from the Bronx. Very much masquerading as a mystic. But LOVE that record, and the 2nd "The Way" probably even more. Another one I'd throw in there is the Soundtrack to Zabriske Point on mgm. Not all out psych but some great tracks on there. What's next Roulette? Mercury?

    • @PsycheDerek.
      @PsycheDerek.  Місяць тому +1

      Sometimes it feels like scrapping from the bottom of a barrel to find out what is all out there on these kinds of labels. Never thought of Zabriskie Point, no soundtracks! 😂 I’d like to keep the theme going, but it takes some prep to hear & hunt down some of these. We shall see what is next…maybe Dot?

    OK here's my Top Five (out of records I own that you mentioned in this video)
    5. Chamaeleon Church: S/T
    Camilla is indeed the best song off of here. (There's an AKARMA reissue with bonus tracks of Chevy playing piano)
    4. ERIC BURDON AND THE ANIMALS - Love Is
    The Andy Summers/Zoot Money lineup of the band. The Gemini/Madman side is brilliant
    3. BODINE
    More of a countryish classic rock record than a psych record. Produced by Bill Cowsill.
    2. BLOOMSBURY PEOPLE
    My copy is a yellow label promo, never seen a blue label copy until I saw yours in this vid. WItch Helen and State Of Confusion are my favorite songs on this
    1. CHRYSALIS - DEFINITION
    I totally concur with your high opinion of this. Songs about watching insects whist high, bizarre hippie love triangles, and the generation gap. What sounds like a harpsichord but is actually a sped up piano. Great male and female vocals.
    Frontman Spider Barbour was friends with Frank Zappa and was one of the spoken word voices on Lumpy Gravy
    HONORABLE MENTIONS:
    THE CORPORATE BODY - Prospectus 69
    Guilty pleasure. The first song is incredibly catchy and caused me to buy back the record years after I sold it. Yellow label promo both times. Produced by Mike Post, who made music for ALL the TV cop shows (Rockford Files, Hill St Blues, Law and Order, etc.)
    VELVET UNDERGROUND - s/t third album
    Put here because it's taken on a life of it's own and so I could put lesser known stuff in the top five

      P.S. I don't know how much you are into instrumental/lounge type records but I feel I should mention THE ALAN LORBER ORCHESTRA - LOTUS PALACE album. Sitar heavy instrumental versions of Hang On To A Dream, Within You Without You, etc.

What’s funny of your top 10 I’ve only own 2 but of the records that didn’t make the list I’ve had all, especially love Song ‘Album’ not psych but it does rip. Also I can’t recommend ‘llxll’ by the Cowsills, would definitely have been in my top 10.

    In the late 60's I'd see Eric Burdon's The Twain Shall Meet regularly in friends collections. That'd be my favorite. It was a very popular album - recognizable cover - and of course had the 2 heavy played Top 40 singles: Monterey and Sky Pilot. Most of the others I'd see in cut out bins in the 1970's. Wish I'd bought them for the future collecting world!

    Chrysalis would be my number one as well. Puff and Ultimate Spinach in the top five too. I'd have a Beacon Street Union in there though. C.W. McCall... I had to go watch the Convoy video after you mentioned him. Good memories of being a child of the 70's...

    Hmmm, my MGM top ten would include 3 of the LPs behind you! Of course Beacon Street Union would be my #1, any Cowsills would be #2 just because, and that Eric Burden LP would be in there too! Actually, too many MGM-ers to even decide upon! Velvet Underground definitely! Especially Bloomsbury People - "Witch Helen" is a classic - got the 45! BOTH Ultimate Spinach LPs would be in my top 10! Your #1 sure surprised me, though!

    Nice lion intro.🦁 Yeah I can honestly say, a lot of the MGM albums mentioned here are one's i've never seen nor heard. I have both label designs of the first Beacon Street Union. The black label is kind of a mystery, as the black label Waddell pressing is not at the top of the list on discogs. ( I've noticed that sometimes the very first LP listed is NOT the first version released ) The black label version is not the most wanted either. Not quite sure what to make of this. It's possible both label designs are first pressings for this album. They might have just been using up some old labels from one of pressing plants. ???????

    • @PsycheDerek.
      @PsycheDerek.  Місяць тому

      That theory doesn't sound too far from reality with them shipping out the remaining black stock out there. Not sure how well it sold compared to the others here. But sometimes I feel they would repress more soon after if they had success.

    • @trevortheclever2738
      @trevortheclever2738 Місяць тому

      I doubt they “reissued” it that soon. I’m comfortable in saying that it was all the same first run of pressings using up the remaining stock of black labels. We can assume the black ones were first off the press, but I wouldn’t think of the two-tone label as any less original.

    Mike Curb became president of MGM in late 69, hence the Michael Lloyd connection. Lloyd was Curb’s prodigy, as such, and he went on to do lots of work for MGM, including the Osmonds and Lou Rawls (those two being the biggest). Bobby Callender was from New York and was a friend of Murray the K. I personally prefer Bobby’s next two albums, especially The Way, and he now currently resides in Florida, going as far as to play his first two albums live there. One can see clips of those live appearances on UA-cam. As ever, excellent choices…must check out that Paige Claire! Never heard of it before now, and it sounds right up my street! Thanks Derek!

    • @PsycheDerek.
      @PsycheDerek.  Місяць тому +1

      Oh okay. I knew he is best known producing, but his name just popped this time as I was reading the credits. I watched some recent live footage of Bobby performing. Still in his zen space. The first Paige Claire track might throw some off, the rest is in a real delicate & dreamy space. Could've almost been a Boettcher project hence the Michele reference.

    Good ol' MGM seemed to be the label that pushed the so-called "Bosstown Sound". Can't beat the mellow Velvet's period. Totally agree about Every Mothers Son 2nd album. It features some great pop-psych tunes. Ultimate Spinach! I would personally place their debut, although a little eclectic, over their 2nd. Their third is a no-no for me. Also have some "Live" stuff by them.
    Had a quick listen to Puff Derek. Not too bad. You might wanna check out my pre-Puff, "Rockin' Ramrods - Play It" video, as well as a few Every Mothers' Son videos, including the rare Rain Flowers clip.
    My number one all-time fave MGM release, is a single, which was only released here in the U.K. (do ya know where I'm going with this?) "Path Through The Forest" by The Factory!! OMG. Psychedelic Heaven!!

    • @PsycheDerek.
      @PsycheDerek.  Місяць тому +1

      I totally forgot to mention the 3rd Spinach. I used to own it, but with only one original member & a switch in direction, I think of it as just another release on the label. I think it has maybe 3 or 4 decent cuts, but I never played it much either. I actually uploaded that full-length of Puff on here on my other channel. Oh totally...The Factory single is incredible. Same as the One In A Million single "Fredereek Hernando".

    • @brucster99b2
      @brucster99b2 Місяць тому

      @@PsycheDerek. Yeah... the 3rd Spinach album ain't too hot, from what I remember. Although I do have their "Romeo & Juliet" 45, which I think was pretty cheap. Back in the mid-90's, I passed on a copy of The Factory's "Path..." 45 at $65!! Can't remember the condition, but back then, it was a fair bit of money to find. I'd bite his hand off now!! One In A Million were cool. There's a comp CD out there, but I haven't played it for ages, so I can't comment on the other songs.
