Senbonzakura (1000 cherry blossoms)
This song is about the westernization of Japan. Despite having an upbeat, oriental track, the song contains rather dark themes, mentioning guillotines and ICBMs. In addition, the lyrics state things such as "Songs of lament go unheard" and "This is a banquet inside a steel jail cell".
The song is taken from Vocaloid, Hatsune Miku has the original for this.
Their entire first album was taken from vocaloid but has since written their own songs. They announced a few days ago that they will release a new vocaloid cover album on August 17 with known and unknown vocaloid songs "Vocalo Zanmai 2"
Next song: "Kyoukasuigetsu + Tsukini sakebuyoru" (Two songs) From react tour 2019 or "Hakushu Kassai" from Daishinnenkai 2018.
In my opinion, they only have good songs.
Oh wow, thank you so much for explaining it to me and I will look out for that album in August as well! ❤️
@@GOTGames Their mix of modern and traditional instruments places them alongside European counterparts such as Nightwish and Eluveitie.
The song is also based on real-life incident in Showa-era Japan called "2.26 Incident" where young officers of the Imperial Japanese Army staged a coup to restore direct imperial rule under Hirohito. But the coup failed which led to the execution of the officers and the military influence over the government further increased.

Love your reaction 😊😊
They exist 🤣They are real💓
Big hug from Japan 🇯🇵

I found this band only recently (regrettably), and was immediately convinced that this band has the highest level of musicianship (musicality/virtuosity) and showmanship (visual/theatrical effects)
Actually, I think this band is among the best fusion bands ever existed, and the very best when it comes to originality and showmanship. Moreover, they can sing/play so effortlessly with smiles on their faces! Mesmerizing both visually and auditorily. As a live performer, this band is peerless
収益の問題点かもしれないですけれども、解散予告が有ります。日本人も、とても悲しいのです。良い案内を提供して下さい。彼女が中国人にスカウトされたら地球の音楽は終わりです。
Your pronounciation was perfect and you also did the sensible thing and split it into it's syllables, which often makes Japanese words easier to say. The consonants usually translate as one word too - here 'senbon' means 'a thousand' (though it also means 'a thousand needles' too; as is very often the case, words can have multiple meanings) and 'zakura' or 'sakura' means 'cherry blossom'. I've been really enjoying seeing your happiness (and jaw-dropping!) at discovering all these bands from Japan over the last couple of months and hope you'll keep exploring all the BabyMetal, Band-Maid, Lovebites, Wagakki, Nemophila back catalogues as well as continuing to discover other Japanese bands. Have to recommend, for more Metal-based awesomeness, Asterism, Ningen Isu and Aldious. And lots more Band-Maid....and BabyMetal...and Lovebites!
Oh yeah more wagakki band! Absolutely love this band. I hope you’ll listen to more of their songs. 💜💜💜
This is probably the most beautiful and diverse pair of songs [a slight break between] that showcases how incredibly talented they are. Currently Yuko [the lead singer] has been hospitalized due to a difficult pregnancy [she's married to the koto player - the harp like instrument]. Hopefully all goes well. You'll love her voice in the opening of this. 和楽器バンドWagakki Band:鏡花水月(Kyoukasuigetsu)+月に叫ぶ夜(Tsukini sakebuyoru) - REACT tour 2019 (sub. provided)
As a Japanese,I’m so glad you like Wagakki Band!
They have toured both the US and Europe, but it has a number of years. With their greater fame, thanks to YT, it should get them to tour the US and Europe soon. Beni Ninagawa is playing the Shamisen, she has her own YT channel plus videos of her playing her shamisen with accompanied by Cockatoo.
The woman you're referring to is Beni Ninagawa, her instrument is a shamisen. At the 5:38 mark, Yuko introduces "shamisen Beni"
Her playing is so much like the Yoshida Brothers. I love their playing.
I totally agree with you. Wagakki is something very special band. If you want to listen more like this ( mix of traditional & modern instruments) please react on The Hu song called “Great Chingis khaan”, “Shireg Shireg” or “Black Thunder”.
I'm in my 50's, and over the past few decades, I have seen and heard a few other bands that attempted to fuse the traditional Japanese sounds with the modern. But as far as I know, Wagakki band is the only one that has succeeded in this type of fusion at this level of sophistication. I'm also currently not aware of any band like Wagakki in Japan.
The Wagakki Band is made up of top-notch musicians who agree with Yuko Suzuhana's (main vocal / sometimes piano) idea of "I want to send Japanese classical performing arts to the world more POP."
"Senbonzakura" is a song included in their first album "Vocalo Zanmai", and when the music video was uploaded, it attracted worldwide attention. (Currently over 140 million views). It was an opportunity to tour in several countries such as France and the United States. They were also selected as official ambassadors for the Tokyo Olympics 2020, but unfortunately they were unable to activity in the Covid-19 lockdown.
* Notes on using Wagakki Band images. *
Wagakki Band terminated its contract with Avex in June 2019 and signed a global contract with Universal Music.
I think it is related to copyright, but MVs other than Avex-owned live video will almost certainly be blocked if used as they are, so processing is required.
New subscriber, but Wagakki Band has many beautiful songs. One of my all time favorites from them is "Tengoku" meaning heaven. Really beautiful piece. Keep up the awesome reacts!
The version with Amy Lee is just as insane. They also duet Bring me to Life and ugh so goood
Sorry, but the Amy Lee collaborations are not up to Wagakki Band standard. They had to hold back to avoid embarrassing her. She was a superstar at one time but by the time they did those collabs she was way over the hill. Wagakki Band is a treat best enjoyed straight.
It’s been said when you go to a Wagakki Band concert you go to an experience!
There are quite a few bands from all over the world that have been using this concept and have been around for years.
Nice to see you headed down this rabbit hole.
IMHO, Yuko’s vocals are some of the best on the planet. She is in my second tier female (there is only one Floor) along with Kirstin Maldonado (Pentatonix), Amy Lee and Lzzy Hale. So the first one of my updated list has Yuko and Amy TOGETHER!

Because what Japanese bands are aiming for is HAPPY METAL!
Please join us at one of our live shows, all bands are fun!
They nailed the tracks and you nailed the reaction. I probably even looked more amazed.
I think ... WagakkiBand and BABYMETAL are the definition of "perfect LIVE" .
... there's nothing that can surpass them in terms of live performance. period.
May I include or introduce Band-Maid into the picture as well? (or no? If not, sorry for intruding.)
@@_goliath2577 .. well, i am truly a fan of BAND-MAID, and LOVEBITES also ... :) .. but, LIVEs of BABYMETAL and WAGAKKIBAND are so theatrical, not just a music concert, a total experience... what i meant :)
The singer is so pretty omg! And her voice
Bring me to Life or Sakura Rising, both featuring Amy Lee(Evanescence) live!!🔥
While you’re at it, should add Senbonzakura with Amy Lee to the list too!
@@GOTGames Plus there's a symphony orchestra and conductor on stage too for Bring me to Life and Senbonzakura
Thank you for another great reaction! Wagakki Band is on another level. Just keep them coming :)
I just want you to take a look at what this happy song is all about.
This song is about the westernization of Japan, which happened during the Meiji Restoration (1868). Despite having an upbeat, oriental track, the song contains rather dark themes, mentioning guillotines and ICBMs. In addition, the lyrics state things such as "Songs of lament go unheard" and "This is a banquet inside a steel jail cell".
Senbonzakura (Eng: Thousand Cherry Blossoms)
With a bold and sudden calling
Western Revolutions starting
Let our hearts be open to it
Pacifist nation
Riding on a penny farthing
It's the flag of our sun rising
Warding evil spirits like an
ICBM
On the train tracks, running along
the line
Let us move forward,
don't look behind
Boys and girls becoming like samurai
Just like those from our previous life
Thousands of cherry blossoms,
Dwindling in the light
Though I can't hear your voice,
keep what I say in mind
This bouquet that surrounds
is iron poison, see
Looking down at us from that big
guillotine
Darkness has just engulfed
the universe we know
The lament that you sing
can't reach ears anymore
We are still far away
from reaching clear, blue skies
Go ahead, keep shooting
with that ray gun, fight!
Veterans who've trained through
struggles
Are now officers in battle
Here, and there, we see the harlots
in procession
This one, that one, doesn't matter
Every single person gathers
March on to our saintly deaths, now
One, two, three, four
Passing through the gates on the
mountain peaks
Escaping this world, kill all the
evil fiends
Surely, this will end in a denouement
Among the crowds giving their appluase
Thousands of cherry blossoms,
Dwindling in the light
Though I can't hear your voice,
keep what I say in mind
This bouquet that surrounds
is iron poison, see
Looking down at us from that big
guillotine
Darkness has just engulfed
the universe we know
The lament that you sing
can't reach ears anymore
We are still far away
from reaching peaks of hope
Go ahead, keep shooting,
use that flashing bolt!
On the train tracks, running along
the line
Let us move forward,
don't look behind
Boys and girls becoming like samurai
Just like those from our previous life
Thousands of cherry blossoms,
Dwindling in the light
Though I can't hear your voice,
keep what I say in mind
That bouquet that surrounds
is iron poison, see
Leaping down to us from that big
guillotine
Thousands of cherry blossoms,
Dwindling in the light
Once your song can be heard,
we'll dance with all our might
This bouquet that surrounds
is iron poison, see
Go ahead, keep shooting,
with that ray gun, lead!

It's always a little weird watching WGB or any live music really when the crowd can't cheer, sing along, etc. Normally, the crowd would sing that little part at 4:07 in this video. It's fun to watch, I'm sure it's fun to participate in, but thanks to covid, the band has to do it all. It's like a barrier between the crowd and the band that neither side wants. It's sad, but hopefully it'll end soon enough. Hopefully.
As far as where to go next, I'm going to suggest "Yoshiwara Lament" from 2017 when the band played on a makeshift stage in front of Heian Jingu, a Shinto shrine in Kyoto. The Heian Jingu show is one of my favorites from WGB, and this song has an incredible melody. It was written by the bass guitarist, Asa, and the performance is a lot of fun despite the song's dark and sad true topic. Here's the link.
ua-cam.com/video/86SNHf94jl4/v-deo.html
The Crowd was not allowed to sing due to policy. All people there had to show a negative test and had to wear masks and were not allowed to leave their seat or place.
So because of COVID they can't sing along? I'm not sure what the rules are ❤️
And thank you so much for the recommendation!
@@GOTGames Pretty much the rules now for any live events in Japan. The most crowd interaction they can do is with applause. Before Covid, Japanese performers had great interaction with their crowds & they fed off it.
@@Stefan7020Love it when people "well actually" me on things I'm already aware of.
I'm very honored to be Japanese ☺️
Senbonzakura gives you a great feel of Japan 🌸🇯🇵
I didn't create or sing Senbonzakura, but watching videos like this makes me feel superior 😂
Thank you for always making videos like this! I'm using a translator so I'm sure there are some weird parts, but I'd appreciate it if you could understand!
There actually are at least a few other bands that combine traditional and modern music in similar ways. My introduction to the concept came in the early 2000s when I discovered a band from Sweden called Garmarna. They basically take traditional Nordic folk and Viking music to rock and metal levels of intensity. Then a few years ago I discovered Wagakki Band and was absolutely thrilled to see the concept taken to new heights Japanese style. Absolutely loving the ride! 😎🤘
Edit: Actually I think my introduction to the concept came several years earlier. There is also a Scottish/Canadian band called Seven Nations that does Celtic rock. They don't really venture into metal territory, but well worth checking out if you like some awesome rock music with fiddle and bagpipes 😊
Thanks for coming back to Wagakki Band. They are bigger than Babymetal in Japan, and a world treasure.
if you want epic performance try this from WB: 鏡花水月(Kyoukasuigetsu)+月に叫ぶ夜(Tsukini sakebuyoru) - REACT tour 2019 ua-cam.com/video/aWlMc-pbDc8/v-deo.html
you won't be disappointed
I would recommend you to check Kagrra, they have this neo japanesque music style, mixing traditional Japanese sounds with rock music. The voice of the vocalist is beautiful and very versatile. And if you check the last live they had before disbanding and before the vocalist passed away you can appreciate that harmony of the band as one and also with their audience, it is beautiful . I really hope one day you get the chance to react to them.
They are pretty good! From what I've read, They have 8 members and 7 instruments, The Hu have 8 members and 9 instruments. You just need to see more Hu! And these folks too, of course!
Akatsuki from the Japanese game/anime Ensemble Stars also mix traditional with modern and they are really great. They are animated and so not live but the songs are fantastic and absolutely worth a listen.
You asked if there are any other bands like them that blend East and West. My first thought was YMO or Yellow Magic Orchestra. They’re a much older band, founded in 1978 and famous for being pioneers of electronic music. Their most famous member is Ryuichi Sakamoto who has composed many film scores, including the theme for Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.
Nice reaction as usual !
There are other bands similar. In Japan you had Kagrra, who unfortunately disbanded and their singer died, but they play modern songs with a traditional twist. For non Japanese, check out Heilung.
I freaking love them so much!
You should check Onmyo-za (e.g. KUMIKYOKU [YOSHITSUNE], Konpeki no Soujin) they create songs based on Japanese folklore in heavy metal music.
This and Ado's version of this song are my favorites.
I think Gacharic Spin "Mindset" MV should go on your list. I've seen enough of your videos to know you will love it haha.
Wagakki Band has great live videos, but their music videos are also beautiful, cool, and wonderful.
We hope you will watch the music video "Senbonzakura" as well.

I love the Wagakki Band. They are amazing!!
You’re reaction is so cute you should do more reaction for those band can’t wait to it 🙏✨🙈
Pronunciation guide: Sen-bone-zah-koo-rah. "e" are said as an 'eh', "o" is said as "oh", "a" are said as "ah", "u" are said as "oo", and "i" are pronounced as "ee". The Japanese language is built around a few constantans paired with vowels. They are broken up in to A, I, U, E, O pairs, so the "K" sounds would be (KA) Kah (KI) Key (U) Koo (E) Kay (O) Koh
I love it so much👍❤️💖🔥
Please do a Yousei Teikoku reaction, try the first song from Shadow Corp ("D" Chronicle) and Age of Villains (Autoscopy). Super underrated band imho!
Wagakki Band are amazing and i think in the number of Instruments melting to gether they are unique. Take Sun Wheel as next song. And listen also to bands like Aterism or SCANDAL you will like them, because listen to more J-Rock is always better :-))

In the anime "Bleach," the character Bayakuya Kuchiki has a sword called "Senbonzakura," and it has a special attack called "Senbonzakura Kageyyoshi" where the sword shatters into a thousand pieces, and the light reflecting off the pieces makes them look like cherry blossom petals floating before they annihilate his opponent. I kinda feel like this song annihilates me every time I hear it because it is just that awesome!
I have been so surprised nobody made reference to Kuchiki Taicho in regards to this lol
Wolfpack's here and everywhere. No, there's no other like this group. They are one in a kind. This song is good for a starter. If you really want to see their insane and incredible real performance, try Toono Monogatari Yon-yon ua-cam.com/video/WlSVRNAkVXY/v-deo.html. You won't believe it how only three Japanese traditional instruments can do insane performance. Amazing crazy solos.
Kyouka Suigetsu + Tsuki Ni Sakebu Yoru ua-cam.com/video/aWlMc-pbDc8/v-deo.html is a most unique and beautiful and epic fusion of Japanese folk sound and heavy metal. It is the best showcase of Wagakki Band with solo of each member.
The banjo like instrument is a Shamisen but This type Futo-zao Tsugaru Samisen is a little diverged from a regular Shamisen. We can talk about instruments when you react to Toono Monogatari Yon-yon as mentioned above.
Ummmm............ NO. There is NO band on Earth like Wagakki Band!
This is it. This is the only one. No England. They did a couple shows in US but I was preoccupied traveling for BABYMETAL.

Amazing reaction. :)
Wagakki Band's mission is to introduce people with wagakki - traditional japanese instruments. Yuko' singing style called "shigin" and that three-strings instrument called "shamisen".
You called them an orchestra... So you can react to their collaboration with Amy Lee and the orchestra with song "Bring me to life". I think you know this song but with Wagakki Band it sounds really different.
Also you have to watch official music video "Senbonzakura" not for reaction-video... for yourself. It is so beautiful!
Thank you for your reaction. I'm waiting for the next japanese music reaction :) And sorry for my English.
You should definitely check out Heartless Scat by Ningen Isu. I really think you'll enjoy them.
Yes they are in anime openings jpop cpop and jpop also you heard aldy a mixed one of traditional sound mixed with hip hop rap from agustd for example and this one is a mix of japanese traditional song with a hint of Rock

The only comparable I can think of is conceptual: Steeleye Span in the 1970s combining 18th and 19th century english music with electric instruments. But even they didn't do traditional instruments, just traditional songs.
I'm not sure if the singer Nao Touyama generally has similar music to this song but at least her song "Tomoshibi no Manimani" is like this
Check out Luna Lee from South Korea she moved to Dallas 2 years ago, sultans of swing
you would also love Sun Wheel (WGB JP tour 2020), then ~

I think Wagakki Band actually takes a lot of inspiration from the soundtrack of Naruto. Naruto would have been very popular in the years leading up to their formation. I actually wrote a paper about Naruto in college because I noted the music excelled in blending traditional instrumentation with rock elements. Waggaki Band has definitely added their own flair to the mix, especially the vocals. I'm definitely not the only one who has noticed this. Wagakki Band ended up performing music for the Naruto kabuki play adaptation and one of the openings for the sequel series Naruto Shippuuden.
That's nonsensical. Combining the Traditional with the modern instruments was pioneered by the WGB'S vocalist Suzuhana Yūko! This is entirely her's and the band's novel idea. Don't go around spouting some non existent role of 2010's Anime! Besides that Naruto play, WGB have also sang for Attack On Titan Live action movie. Don't glorify your fav anime by imbuing credit of someone's intellectual property! 😒😑
@@kevinclifton8276 He was only speculating and Naruto came out 2002, so to say it was pioneered by WGB is wrong when it was already popular 10 years before them as they formed 2012
@@karljuliuz May be. But the proper and the finest fusion is from WGB. Also if there was something like this 10 y/a it'd hv been sensational but since it wasn't than their fusion might not be as good as WGB.
I Enjoyed your reaction, I've never heard this group before. Please consider checking out SuperM and Taemin. SuperM is made up of members from EXO, Shinee, NCT and Wayv. Taemin is a member of Shinee, he is regarded as the "Idol" of Idol's as a soloist.
