I think they should have a "fact sheet" where they are transparent that the "magic powder" is corn starch. Would also be fun for the younger ones with a recipe of oobleck. Such a waste that companies do not use kits to encourage children's curiosity to learn more. Like 'Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Laboratory' which (despite dangerous substances) encouraged several famous scientists.
I find it mind boggling that toy companies are legally allowed to avoid mentioning or labelling the actual ingredients. This could have serious consequences in terms of ingestion, allergies etc. Of course in this specific case, an allergy to cornstarch is extremely rare so maybe that's why they decided to go ahead with it. The other obvious example is uncured silicone in Elmer's Squishies Kits and MGA Miniverse's inclusion of UV resin which was actually forcefully recalled because people could develop serious resin allergies.
@@sikorilzcx4513when money is involved, they will always go with what is more profitable, despite the dangers. What you have to do is convince them that NOT listing the ingredients will lose them money…you can do that by simply not supporting the company, filling a class again lawsuit, or something along those lines. Unfortunately in the US corporations are in control of every arm of our government so laws will always favor them until something drastically changes.
So glad we saw this video, I absolutely would buy something like this for my 6 year old but would be so annoyed by the fact it is so expensive for such basic ingredients. been watching your videos for yearrrssss! ever since your needle felting videos but i’m not sure why i never commented before, i’ve noticed your posting less and i just want to say i truly appreciate your videos and now that im much older i find myself going onto your channel to watch something as i eat rather then watching all the time since a child but I do hope you post more videos! i’m definitely not the only continuous watcher that just doesn’t comment so i hope this somehow makes you happy! your videos are so entertaining and i always look forward to a new one! you keep my love for art and crafts alive :))
Thank you so much!! I wish I could upload videos more often but I find UA-cam tends to favour longer videos with more detail, so a simple DIY like I used to make is no longer enough. I do still have tons of ideas so if I have gaps between uploads it's because the next video is probably a long one and not because I'm running out of inspiration 😂
speaking of misleading children, when I was in elemetary school, the class played with oobleck and the teachers told us it came from the moon. As a grown adult, I look back on that and wonder why in a school setting did they intentiallly mislead all the kids.
when i was in primary school (maybe around 6 years old), the globe we had in the classroom had a dent in it where australia was. i asked the teacher why there was a dent in it as i hadn't ever seen another globe, and he told me that australia got hit by a meteor and it left a huge crater and australia was inside it. obviously i belived that because i was a kid and an adult who was supposed to know things told me that, but i felt so stupid when i was older and found out it was not true
@@nerdycurls6253 I feel like there’s a time for making things more fun and a time for turning things into a genuine learning lesson because when we were taught about Oobleck in elementary school we were given a sciencey explanation/demonstration of it and I think I appreciated that more.
Ok what hell is wrong with schools, my old one put my I project groups with someone who was always bullying me, and they knew it, then I complained to the teacher and she threatened me with detention 😅

I think it was just a coincidence. When i was in middle school (2014-2016) my friends and i would make the same type of clay with cornstarch in some slime.
Yes I can totally believe that lots of kids made similar clays back in the days! Though oddly enough, there wasn't a slime clay recipe posted on a blog or video (until mine) which is why I find the Elmers recipe a bit sus. They definitely have a history for taking UA-cam trends and repackaging it as their own product.

i've also gotten my best friend and boyfriend to watch ur videos, haha! i made my mom a needle felted cat off of your tutorial for christmas in middle school. ugh im blabbering on but just so glad you've uploaded haha
oh trust they are making a profit, its a similar price if WE buy the materials, in the bulk they produce\buy they are paying a fraction of that price 💯
Yes I was very generous with my calculations and going on the assumption it would be a private person buying single packages of Elmers brand products. The cheapest option would be to just get generic craft glue, contact lens liquid/baking soda and cornstarch. The exact same products would probably set you back $5
The exact size of the spoon doesn't matter too much as long as you use the same one for all ingredients. However I felt that 2:1 of glue to activator (based on their instructions) is a very high ratio so the slime was almost inevitably going to end up over activated.
Yes it does look a lot like Model Magic but the texture is much denser and it's harder to sculpt. I'm not a fan of the smell but I find MM is a surprisingly good paper clay with a soft, fluffy texture and you can create lots of details with it. This Elmers "clay" is honestly closer to a dough and it feels like working with bread dough. You can create simple shapes but nothing more complicated than what I made in this video.
I really, really doubt that a company as massive as Elmer's stole the recipe from your video being that it's not a complex recipe at all. It's literally adding corn starch into slime - something that is already done for iceberg slime anyways albeit at a much lower amount of cornstarch. Also, they don't need to look on youtube for a recipe on how to thicken something - the market they're in is already well aware of thickeners like corn starch. If it was a complicated recipe involving a bunch of different things that aren't commonly put together, that'd be one thing. But you didn't invent putting corn starch into slime, and I'm certain that many, many people have figured that out who have never heard of your channel.
I agree but Elmers has a lengthy history of taking UA-cam trends from indie creators and rebranding it into a corporate product. I genuinely don't care whether their recipe came from my channel or not as it's not rocket science as you pointed out. However I think someone needs to call them out for the audacity of trying to gatekeep cornstarch as a top secret "magical" product.
Yep! I would recommend only activating the slime 30-50%, so it should still look quite sticky. However that gives the clay just enough elasticity to work with. From experience, using fully activated slime means you end up with a clay that keeps spreading out while drying.
Is it that we were blind to these kinds of cheap-o tactics in the past, or because we were kids ourselves and didn't care because it was fun? Or is this a newer thing?

@@maqaroon Completely forgot about the allergy risk! It is unacceptable; easy way to get sued and at worst can be dangerous for children

the fact the 'magic powder' was just one ingredient and not even a composite is ridiculous!
