I'm starting a new video series called The 400 Square Foot Garden. I'm going to teach you how to grow food from May thru Fall with a crop plan for succession plantings to take all of the guesswork out of growing. I'm hoping to inspire as many as possible to create a small sustainable garden using only a small 20x20 foot area in their backyard!

We are doing this feed with our layers. We have heavy breeds and they'll lay in Winter (I'm in Zone 6). We have Welsummer, Buff Orpingtons, Partridge Rocks, and Golden Wyandotte. They do well on rice & beans with the Black Soldier Fly larvae. I watched your videos quite a while ago and decided to work with the diet. It works and we are getting more eggs than we did while feeding a quality feed! So we're happy with a home-cooked feed.
Currently, I make rice every other day and am using or home-canned beans. Once I go through my final case, then I'll have to switch my cooking around. Preparing our hens' meals are not a problem and whether we're saving money or not isn't the issue. We want quality eggs, we need to give our chickens quality foods.
During gardening season, we've always fed our poultry lots of fresh produce. You'll enjoy growing foods for your hens. We also forage for those delicious weeds they love (they go crazy for chickweed or purslane). It's fun to watch them come running when they see us walking down to their yard -- they know it's "treat" time.
Thanks so much for the kind words. I agree with you it’s more about quality eggs not necessarily the cost. I’m a little jealous you’re still getting eggs though, mine are on a break. I love seeing the chickens eat the weeds we pull and other goodies from the garden.
I love how you are feeding your chickens, and a garden for the chickens, genius! Someday I hope to have chickens. Val C
Thanks so much you won’t regret having chickens!
Definitely excited to see how your chicken garden goes! Great idea
Glad to see you’re excited as I am! I really want to push the limits of what I can grow in a small scale backyard
I LOVE how you put the rice &beans and liquid in a PUMPKIN SHELL!! What a great way to incorporate your garden produce into their diet. I can't wait to see your chicken garden!! Such a good idea that i will enjoying trying when I get chicks. Do you have the leftover lettuce, radishes, turnips etc under a low tunnel?
I don’t have them under a low tunnel, so they suffered some frost damage but they’re still alive enough to satisfy the chickens, they don’t care too much!
I'm a zone colder than you, so the romaine lettuce, ironically enough named Winter Density, was annihilated by a week of round the clock temps in the 20's. The leaf lettuce, Red Fire came thru okay. Everything in the low tunnel was fresh as a daisy . I signed up for your newsletter. Looking forward to it!! @@onceuponatinyfarm
@@anniebancroft1175awesome!!!
I’m a little surprised chickens can be raised on rice and beans - I don’t know why I’m surprised - ah, okay , bugs and greens too - okay now i understand - good for you ! A chicken garden sounds like a lovely idea
You could cook up a big batch of bean and rice, portion it out into daily amount and freeze it. You still would be thawing it up and warming it for them every day so if you are tempted to take a break this could be one way to do it. I cook grains and rice for me this way😄
I’ve never considered freezing this in larger batches but that’s a really good idea. Some mornings I am getting up later to cook for them and they eat later, would be nice to have it ready to go. 👍sometimes I make it the night before and just grab it in the morning too, it stays warm that way. I’m glad you’re excited about a chicken garden too!
you get there compost also. your eggs taste so much better,
Absolutely I’ve been using so much of their compost made in their run this year
Just make sure you cook the rice separately in a way that removes most of the arsenic. Rice contains arsenic, so rinse your rice several times, then boil it in a lot of water like you do pasta, and discard the water. You don’t want your chickens or yourselves to be exposed to arsenic on a daily basis. 😉
Good advice 👍
@@onceuponatinyfarm I like the rice & beans suggestion!
I was doing some research and it looks like Chewy sells black soldier fly larvae for a couple dollars cheaper per pound than the one you recommend. Just thought I'd point that out in case you or anyone else is interested in saving even more money.
I’ve checked out that site before too they had good deals and brands of layer feed as well
How much was ur initial hens flock? And whats the mortality so far
I haven’t lost any birds
My will eat the rice but not very much of the beans any idea
Mine will eat the rice first and later in the day they will come back to finish the beans.
Ok I will keep feeding them both
@@monapittman2135make sure to really overcook the beans so they’re really mushy I notice when I don’t cook them to be soft enough they won’t touch them either so I try cooking them longer
