Fun fact: this old men picture of Crossings's sleeve, belongs to a National Geographic photo of a tribe from Africa. I used to think it was Herbie and his band. Many years after I almost ramdomly discovered that old Nat Geo magazine in a Hostel during one of my many travels around my country and it was a big surprise to see the Crossings picture. Too sad by the time I still didn’t have a smartphone with a camera.
@@katznels5 i believe it is hard to find, as I found it randomly in an Hostel in Coroico Bolivia, but I believe that Nat Geo magazine was released in early 70’s.
Abu Bakar predecessor of Mansa Musa - After all the supplies and equipment were ready, Mansa Abubakr II crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1311. The journey was recorded in history, but no one knows if he reached America. ... However, the signs confirm that African Muslims are the first to reach America, and not European sailors. In 1324, while staying in Cairo during his hajj, Mansa Musa, the ruler of the Mali Empire, told an Egyptian official whom he had befriended that he had come to rule when his predecessor led a fleet in an attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean and never returned. Mansa Musa came to power in 1312 C.E., after the previous king, Abu Bakr II, disappeared at sea. Mansa Abu Bakr II had departed on a large fleet of ships to explore the Atlantic Ocean, and never returned. Abu Bakr: the first is a son of Sunjata's daughter who reigned as mansa between Khalifa and Sakura and Abu Bakar the second is a brother of Sunjata who was the ancestor of Mansa Musa ...Abu Bakar II .An African emperor who ruled Mali in the 14th century discovered America nearly 200 years before Christopher Columbus, according to a book to be launched this month. Abubakari II ruled what was arguably the richest and largest empire on earth - covering nearly all of West Africa. After ascending the throne of the Mali Empire, Abu Bakr II became Mansa Qu, but his aspirations did not lie in ruling the land. Instead, he looked westward, fixated on the idea of finding the far edge of the ocean and a new land beyond it.
I would have never understood this music back in 1972...maybe 1982. But, "Lord Have Mercy" do I ever know what it is all about now! And I'm almost 60 years old! :) Chicago has street names for many celebrities...how about one for Herbie Hancock? Damn...what a composition! Herbie is STILL the man.
Happy 82nd birthday to Herbie Hancock ,Herbie being one of the pioneeers of Jazz Funk never failed to deliver, once more proving his unique versatility being able to switch from hardcore fusion, straight up Jazz or Jazz funk
Yeah I agree. My only guess is that with this being the opening track on this album and the previous album Mwandishi being so mellow it could mean that the giant woke up to start this album if that makes sense.
I never really got the title of this song, I don't think of a Sleeping Giant when I listen to this song, I think of a Giant that is toppling a city, ripping people in half all King Kong Style

Is the original photo available online?

If you like Herbie, you'll probably like Chick Corea too.
Yeah, that’s a great idea. You’re right, the music was at least 20 years ahead of its time. Still not fully recognized.
@@patrickgleeson8525 thank you for your contributions, Dr. Gleeson!!
So much happening in this music. That's the place to go for a challenge.
Herbie Hancock Sextant, Sleeping Giant....Still smokin' after all these years! Amazing Stuff!
Herbie had a superb band in the early 70s-this album, along with Mwandishi and Sextant is amazing.
As the track progresses I can actually see the giant waking up and going back to sleep. The title paints quite an amusing picture.
An absolute beast of a track!

Having bought this album and listened very closely to this track I think I can safely say that this is the best thing on the internet.
A monumental achievement by Herbie and his genius colleagues. I love the Mwandishi period of his music, it's still so advanced sounding.
Yes! The perfect way to spend the last half hour at work.
I'm thinking of Charles Bronson in the first Death Wish creepin for thugs! Sick!! Glad I have this on LP!!
This is one of my favorite albums, we go way back, it's like a medicine for my soul.

Fantastisch! Crossings has always been my favourite album from Herbie. Amazing moment at 2.25...

Also that groove starting at 11:06 ... can't find the words for it yet, but it involves a whole novel's worth of prayers to it's dopeness.
nice christmas present to find this here, thanks!
7:46 Mr Len - Good Morning
Just as about as imaginary as it gets Herbie is the best....
I've heard that the segment between 11:06 and 12:50 was re-cut and released as a single.
Well, it was the 70s, everything was a metaphor for society
could be a metaphor for something. like something in society.
I'm dying at around 13:20

You has no sense of poetry, of jazz. . . .
