    When I try and prune my Cherokee Purple tomatoes like this, I get severe sun scalding. Fresno is known for its long, hot summers with long days with plenty of sun. I’ve tried it over and over but get sun scald every time.

      Ah, good point. That area is east so it gets morning shade, then late afternoon shade because of an Elm tree, then a another full sun for an hour or so while the sun is dropping.

    Thank you for this video 1st yr for me growing Cherokee Purple tomatoes, and they're in grow bags down here in GA. I'm gonna prune mine from bottom up...thank you. I like what you said-youre growing fruit, not leaves. No pests yet.

      Most welcome. They can be tricky but worth the effort. Our favorite slicing tomato by far. I’ll even eat the bottom half after slicing like an apple. 😀

    Very nice! Ours do NOT look that good. But we've been having a soil issue this year. Amazing looking beds 😊

      Hey hey. Thanks so much. What kind of soil issue?

    • @HomesteadFresh
      @HomesteadFresh Рік тому

      we rushed it and didn't add enough of our compost... too much clay, so the soil got too compact.

    I’ve run into the problem of branches snapping because I did not prune. I’m going to have to do the paper bag ripening. Seems like they really took off after a foliage feed of fish emulsion of weeks ago and a little rain.

      IOt is worth it my friend. We are taking them now for that very reason. CP's are tricky my friend.
      Happy gardening!

    Toms look great! I think I’m having a soil problem this year. Maybe I should have rotated tomatoes. May have pushed my luck.

    You have nice clusters of tomatoes on there. When green, they look simlar to the Brandywine im growing this. Youre getting better pollination than my Brandywine tho'.

      We have had a some good luck with those this year. No splits. Amazing. I guess I got the water perfect and picking timed well this year. It's been a good year for them in spite of the heat wave.

    Thanks for the great information! Those are some healthy tomatoes. What is Chef Beth planning for all those tomatoes? I made tomato preserves today for the first time (Ball Canning Book). Yummy!

      Well, we eat the purples as is with some pepper, make tomato pie and give a few now and then to our daughter who LOVES them. She grew up eating purples so....she's not impressed with restaurant maters per se. lol.

      @@JulesGardening Sounds like an awesome plan. Homegrown maters are the best!

    Always solid content! Like the bonus tips and tricks. I hear you about the rain. A week ago or so we had two days of heavy down pours. I staked the tomatoes that needed it because I rotated them to a bed without a trellis. The heavy rain mangled them all together and the stakes became useless. That has never happened before. No broken branches, but so intertwined that I just left them. If I need to do a little trimming as the fruits need more sun, I will. But, right now I don't want to take a chance of snapping branches. Enjoyed! Take care!

      40 day heat wave and counting. I am surprised the tomatoes having been cracking like crazy. We kept up daily with the water. That must be it. Thanks for popping in Susie!
