- Balut is a fertilized duck egg with a duck embryo inside. Would you KNOCK IT, or TRY IT? Tell me in the comments!
Balut is a common street food in Asia, notably in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia. I grew up eating balut in the Philippines, and I still LOVE eating it today.
Balut is the most flavorful hard boiled egg you could possibly have! It's got 10x more umami compared to a typical chicken egg, and it even comes with a delicious broth. YUM!!
For beginners, I recommend eating balut without taking it apart first. Just bite right in!
Get a taste of the fertilized duck egg, realize what you've missed out on, and then eat some more!

Balut is my favorite! Especially the duck!!!❤❤
Wow that looks delicious! The balut looks great too.
I miss eating balut with my friends! When we go to the park, we usually eat balut and it's sooooo good. I miss the balut vendor saying "baluuuuuuut". I haven't able to eat balut because I can't go out because of the pandemic :(
you good?

I LOVE the white “stone” part!
Thank you, Jeanelle for this video - it brought back such nice memories of my own experience with balut!
I absolutely love balut! I am from Romania and I travelled some years ago to the Philippines and spent some time in the Baguio and Abra area. That is where my filipino friends introduced me to balut! So thankful they insisted that I try it! lol... I was a little apprehensive at first, but the very first time I tasted it, it just blew my mind - couldn't believe I actually absolutely loooveeed the taste! It was such a fun and yummy experience! I kept asking to go get some more and that's when my friends explained how rich in calories and proteins only one balut was - so it was recommended to not exceed more than 3-4 baluts a day... lol ... I was quite sorry coz I kept wanting more! lol...
The way they showed me how they were eating balut over there was a little different from the way it is shown in the video. We used to crack the round part just a little bit, only enough so as to drip a little salt and vinegar inside and then just sluuuurp the amazingly delicious juice inside! Yummm!! It is true that the balut in this video did lack that wonderful "juice" while those in Abra always had a fair amount of it inside! Sooo yummy!! After slurping the "juice" we would peal it a bit more and just drip more salt and vinegar over it and just bite into it like in this video!!
Jeanell, you are totally right saying that the juice announces how yummy the rest of it is!!! Absolutely exactly right!! I really don't know what tastes better - lol - the juice or the actual "chick" inside!!! They are both amazing!! I definitely would encourage anyone and everyone to try it, if they can put aside thinking of the "embryo" inside and all the "issues" that may come with that train of thought!!!
If you don't think too much about what exactly and how exactly everything inside came to be and looks and so on (just like Jeanelle says in the video - don't observe it too much, you might find it disturbing! ) - that was a good story Jeanelle about how you couldn't eat it for 2 weeks after seeing the head... lol ... if you don't overthink the whole thing that you are about to try, you are much more likely to get to actually try it and I am pretty certain that you might discover - just like I did - that it actually tastes absolutely incredibly delicious!
Just like many other things in life - don't overthink, just do it, coz you might miss out on something great!
Thanks again Jeanelle - really nice video and hopefully it will inspire more people to try this true delicacy of your country!
There is no way in hell I’d eat this. That being said, I love your enthusiasm for it. This was an enjoyable video to watch - even if it did make me squirm a bit.
😮Interesting food! Floating eggs generally mean the eggs are going past their "use by date!" They get a gas bubble in them! 😊
I am pretty sure I ate the part you are supposed to throw away. But I absolutely LOVE it!! I remember after I tried it, I saw it on the show "Bizarre foods" with Andrew Zimmer and I think he described it the best. He said "It tastes like a hard boiled egg cranked up to 11".
It really is cranked up!
I had been eating balut for the last 40yrs . Now am 55yrs old from Nagaland. Actually some parents doesn't allow small children's to eat balut, saying it spoils the eye seight of children's. Now we know why. It's simply so tasty so children's aren't allowed to eat balut in the old days.😁
Why does this disturb & repulse me so much?? I'm not bothered by people eating normal-unfertilized duck eggs, duck-meat, caviar (unborn fish) or tiny creatures like sardines, but a tiny unborn duck seems absolutely horrible, not sure why - logically it should be no different than eating any other meat, but it is just totally grotesque for some reason...
Because you see tiny face of the baby duck in it for godsake, it is totally normal to be horrified!
caviar is not fertilized btw, not the same thing.
Probably because the duck's neural tube is already developed at that stage so it feels all the pain of being boiled alive.
@@mattk6101 lost my appetite for eggs…
Because your brain registers it as a baby, and babies must be protected. That’s instinct.
Oh hell no. My first rule - I don't eat anything with face...
But you can eat your boyfriend with face? Lol get the hell outta here
Very interesting. Not sure if I will try it but at least I know how to eat it. 🙂
Mucho saraps ng balut!
Oh ok beer. Yeah I would have to be very drunk to start trying to eat balut.
First! And I’m Filipino to boot! Haha!
I am from western Europe but I would try this anytime! It seems tasty 💕
Haven't had balut in a while! I'm salivating lol
I haven’t eaten this in about 4 years! My white mom gets disgusted thinking about it but my Filipino mom thinks there delicious and so do I!

Missing to eat balut back home!😍

thank you so much!
I could never
I came from Clubhouse. I really enjoyed your moderation on Food Content Creators. I just started cooking video on UA-cam 1 month ago. I want to learn more from you. I am native Japanese currently live in Chicago. I also visited Manila many times and I love Philippines foods. I subscribed your channel and looking forward your coming videos.
I made my students watch this at school. Some of the are super keen to try it
Which one do you prefer the 16 day or I think the 22 day embryo ones
Whichever is bigger! so that means the 22
It’s a rite of passage in some circles! In the Philippines, my relatives were so proud when I tried it. :-)
@@Jeanelleats usually the 22 day old will have feathers on the chick, and a lot bigger, the 16 day old egg is better for me bcoz' the chick is covered with the white part and doesn't have feathers yet, and the stone will be a lot smaller. Btw, you won't feel the bones with the 16 day old egg too much.
Try it
You make it look so delicious! Can’t wait to try it! 😋
You drank beer with balut as a child?
What exactly is the stone
Let me try to explain, balut is like any other egg, it has the yolk and the white part, when fertilized, the chick will form from the white part, when it grows a little bigger the chick will be encased on the white part, the yolk is where the chick will get the nutrients as it grows (this is the best part to become a "balut" because the chick is still not that big/old and won't have any feathers yet, we call this "balut sa puti"(stlill "covered in white" - the chick is covered in the white part - as Jen said some of the white part/stone are sometimes big and some are small), as the chick grows bigger or develop it will grow feathers and no longer encased in the white part and will become tough, and that becomes the stone, you can actually eat it as well if you want but it is really like rubber and tasteless not like the yolk which is like a regular yolk from a chicken egg . Hope I manage to explain it to you. Try it one time, you might like it.
Very education for someone about to travel to the Philippines!
H my god I love this us asian eat this all the time.
Is there hare onit?
Love Balut, probably one of the top reminders of good childhood memories. A reduce tamarind sauce or thai sweet chili with a little rice is soooooooo good.
I’ve eaten balut many times but I have really enjoyed it only once. That was in the middle of a 10 hour drive we saw this vendor on the side of the road. I ravished 3 baluts. And it’s true what they say I felt my knees stronger. No redbull or coffee can give that instant kick of energy. It was delicious 🤤
One way fo' eat the bird!
😁!
Balut
I like put tabasco on top
&Like, Wow aynaku the Pilipino
vinegar is supah dupah
omg! I have to try that next time! thanks for the tip!
My Kuya likes it so much btw my Kuya is my cousin only philipino know wat is a Kuya
Lame on them not having broth. Didn't realize Americans thought this was weird until I was Jr high lol
Americans be like: OO an egg “opens egg” AAAAAAAAAAAAA
I’m philipino I love Balut
Accidentally bought some of these thinking I was getting underutilized duck eggs - I didn't notice until I cracked the egg to fry it. I didn't want it to go to waste, so I fried it, but the duck burned real fast and the rest of the egg wasn't that good. Clearly, frying is not the way to go - I'll try it this way next one!
I've tried it twice balut and that century egg ..
i had a vertion of this at my aunts wedding but there was a pig embryo somehow
My mother-in-law's favorite snack was balut in the Philippines......I'd probably need more beer but I'd try it.
Many, many, many beers
Try it! Friend just ordered some. I'll let you know next week what we think.
I would love to try it. If I'm "brave" enought to try deep fried testicles and cheese (powdered) crickets, among other things, this shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I found this YT video with an interest in balut.
I eat the rubber. Lol
I thought it was a joke so I came here to watch. I’m not open to try it. We are all alike yet so different. Some eat bats, rats and dogs. Now I’m watching a woman eating a fertilize eggs. I would throw up if I see this in person. I can’t judge because I enjoy fish’s head.
nope.
oh
i ate the part you were supposed to discard 💀
The white part is one of my favorite parts. I always eat that part.
I agree not to separate the layers. Just eat it like a normal hard boil egg, and you'll just be fine. I eat like half a dozen in one sitting.
That baby also same as human baby how they eat it…
What
I wood take some shots of tequila and then try balut
I would never eat this
I LOVE BALUT!
I THINK IS YUCKY I HATE EATING DUCKS IS IT ALIVE??
I'm from one country in Central America and it looks curious to eat, maybe the next year I travel to that region and eat some balut haha
That’s nasty!
I do not like the white hard part
This is cruel and disgusting. OMG.
no bones???
Nope 👎
Nope.
