Chris, after seeing you “see” and attempt some low percentage, even crazy, shots in your videos, I can see why you liked his carom bank on the 8. We gotta always look for the opportunity, especially when regular choices are not available.

That was a lot of fun. I hope to play against Ralf or even some other pro players soon. It's the best training I can currently get, especially mentally. If you don't want to get spoiled, don't read further. I really wanted to win for you guys, or make it at least as close as possible - but my nerves got my several times. I hope you enjoyed the match!

I play bank pool at a pretty high level. My cousins heard I was a very good pool player. At big family gathering, with access to a pool table ( bad one ). Anyway with all my relatives standing around watching me play, I put on a very poor show. Even though I've gambled at pool for decent money and was the victor many times, never was I as nervous as I was with my all my relatives watching me. So I know why you played below your true level, we are your pool family. Relax, you will get it right. :0)

That's the worst thing!!! And when you even mention the table, you're making excuses :D Only way to get around this is to get used to the pressure. Every time I go to the local pool club, I try ask someone good to play against me. I still play terribly, but at least I'm getting used to the pressure!

Sharivari you should be extremely proud playing a pro player of Ralf’s caliber. To win one game against a player like that is something to be proud of. But you winning 4 games against a world class player shows you’re an extremely talented and hard working player.. well done my friend.

I once had the opportunity to play Allan Hopkins in an eight ball race to 15... He won the lag and proceeded to break and run 15 racks in a row. I learned so much watching him shooting his racks. I didn't get a single shot and still learned something. So as long as you learned something from this, then you didn't really lose. Cheers from Massachusetts, United States.

Man it's so good to see a youtuber who is not embarrassed (not that it is embarrassing anyway) to post a video where we can see you making some mistakes. In today's age when people are so blinded by the prospect of absolute perfection that they forget what it is all about - enjoy the game, including mistakes, cause if you were absolutely spot on perfect where would the fun in the game be? I know I am repeating myself, but I seriously have to say you have helped me improve my game so much I can't even begin to describe how grateful I am. I still remember watching your videos for the first time thinking 'a draw shot over at least half a table? God I will never be able to do that', with your help I got there, and am still getting there, whatever 'there' means :D

On those key corner pocket shots with outside english going 2 rails (1:26:05), make sure you let the english do the work! Any bit softer with english (or rather more english) you would have made it and still come up nice on the next ball. On such a fast table knowing that you aren't completely in stroke, you have to consider hitting the ball somewhat slower. If you can't open up your stroke fully, slow it down- it's a good adjustment to think about next time! I would be nervous playing Ralf as well :)

  • @olavodias

When you say you didn't 'feel well' , I presume you mean you weren't confident with the shot you're about to shoot. (?) To not 'feel well' implies
your're physically sick. You did a great job though, thanks again.

@ Sharivari I also played against Ralph in the scotch doubles 9 ball tournament in Rokietnica Open 2019. I was playing with my friend, Ralph played with Adam Mścisz from Poland. I really understand why you were nervous especially in the beginning of this match. Ralph is incredible strong player (he never missed any ball in this match!). In our match we lost 5-6, in the decider I played tough 9 ball combination with a lot clusters on the table so I thought it was the safe option. Then Ralf and his friend brutally showed me that I was wrong with my decision. Greetings from Poland!

You are being WAY too hard on yourself - you were playing one of the legends of the game and held up quite well. And don’t forget Ralf got to his level by playing against many other world-class players through the years. I thought you did quite well given the pressure of sharing a table with someone of that caliber!

TWO very classy professionals. Ralf promised me that when he retires from professional competition, he would tell me and possibly the rest of the world, what he is thinking and/or doing when he is sitting in his chair. As a commentator for many pro matches, I noticed that besides Ralf phenomenal skills at the table, he is doing something else, while in his chair that is a bit different from some of the other professional players. Ralf, I'm still waiting, but you do what's best for you. I've always enjoyed your stellar play and professional manner, win or lose. Sharivari, you are in good company and making a valuable contribution to the billiard community. From across the pond; thank you both.

That was great to watch! I'm impressed that you held your own for the most part (especially when you're not a pro player). Good practice for you to play under pressure. It'll be interesting if you can in future stay in the zone while under pressure ... "in the zone", and "in your own world" (type of thing). Also it's good to lose the first encounter, so you can learn and then see if you can do better next time. :D

Much respect for both you and Ralf for doing this!! I think he may have had similar nerves being filmed (possibly) it seemed so to me. Lot of pressure for pros to teach and make mistakes. Very humble of you both.
My only wish would be for you to take something like this match and overlay your regular ball english and speed/power icon...even if you're just guessing. Maybe a line drawing and angle read for rail/kick shots that happened as well?

I took up pool about 2 decades ago, trained intensively by a friend of mine who later, without my knowledge, enrolled me into a pool tournament 😅 But that’s not the worst part 😂 Before my match, I looked at the tournament fixture and saw (75) beside my opponent’s name. Yeah a 75th ranked player in my country 😆
That discovery, along with my first time playing a pool tournament with so many people watching close around the table, I was a nervous wreck. Fast forward, after missing 3 easy shots, I decided to play safety all the way 😂 can’t recall if it was a race to 3 or 5 but I dragged the match with safety play for almost 2 hours 😂 since I knew I couldn’t win, I might as well make him sweat 😆 after he won the match, he complimented my safety play. I never played competitively ever again lol

I can’t imagine the nerves you were feeling. I play a decent game, but when it comes to playing in a tournament for money, I get the same way. I want you to know when I watch your videos, I feel you are a much better player than you think you are. You are a professional, just like Ralph and if you could keep that confidence that we all see when you do your videos, you would know that you are just as good of a player. Thank you for all you do. I’ve played my whole life, self taught, (I’m 40) and I’ve learned so much from you. And always continue learning.

It's definitely not easy stepping outside your comfort zone. Specially playing a world champion. But you played pretty good. I played a mini tournament at Griffs in Vegas and Mike Massey was there. I was just telling my dad and fiance that it would be crazy if I got to play him. 20 min later they called my name for table one to play Mike on the table that everyone watches. He had to spot me the 7,8 and 9. And I was pretty nervous but I shot great and won 6 to 3. Highlight of my playing so far. He said he wants a rematch. Hopefully this next month in Vegas at the nationals with no spot.

Enjoyed the Match and I felt your nervousness. Years ago I needed one more win to then play SVB. I think I was scared to win that match and face him, and I tanked it. One question re your choice of shots: At 46:30, you chose to hit a very difficult table length long draw on a ball next the rail and pocket. I saw a rail 1st path to the next ball at the other end. Did you consider that option?
Keep your wonderful instructive videos coming. Between you, Anthony Beeler, and lLil Chris, I’ve got all the instruction and insight I can handle.

Thx 4 ur work!! Buuut...even it easy to cmm from.the chair i have to say that u play to much with back spin. Those tipes of shoots are harder to control. Many shoots u have made put u in trouble just because ur used back spin than follow and english. Ur not goin to the ball. Maybe u was nervous and a bit emotional in that situation but for sure u had many chances to beat Ralf easy. Indeed are many things to learn for this video. Look more at Efren Reyes videos even now on 2021. Thx.

Mr. Sha was that a money game or not? if yes, wow, you're awesome to play againts my one of my idol Ralph without handicap. Here in the Philippines I dont have a courage to go against the Pro in moneygames especially my stakers/managers, they dont let me play without handicap like 7/10 or 8/10 in 10 ball. you cant play against the pro if it is not a moneygame.

English is just fine. Better than my German! Good video. Good explanation of what is happening and why. Both execution, tactics, and the mental game. A success if you are trying to show how to play. Thank you.

Embarrassing is relative. I would imagine Ralf would also considered his beginning performance embarrassing if he considered this game like a real match. You missed shots you shouldn't and your safety game was ok but you got lucky a lot too. Either way I still enjoyed this video as it made me feel better when I miss simpler shots and yall are much better than me. Get your nerves down and you'll do better next time. Remember its a game. Have fun and just visualize the ball going into the pocket.

It’s nice to see you in a real match. It’s hard going up against a player that you idolize. Not only are you thrilled to be playing against them but your nerves are in overdrive. You know that you would love to beat them but there is always something in your brain that reminds you just how good they are and they would be difficult to beat. I noticed in the video you kept mentioning how good he is at safeties and what a good player he is. That may be true but if you keep telling yourself that (in your mind) it will work to undermine your game before you have even played it.
I know this because I had this one person I would always play against and I could never beat them even thought I was a better player and I had beat better players than them. I finally realized It was all about my mindset. In my mind I had painted them as this great unbeatable player, when the truth was, they were not that great and they were beatable. So as soon as I changed my mindset and told myself I was a better player (even if it wasn’t true)and made my MIND believe it I started beating them every game I played against them.
So I completely understand how you were feeling at the time and why you may not have been playing your best. Nerves will get you every time. So better luck next time 😁👍and thank you for letting us watch this wonderful match. Take care, Dee😊

Sharivari: I understand the difficulty of English as a second language. To me the most bothersome thing is you interjecting "so, yeah" countless times in this video. This adds nothing to the commentary but is very noticeable. I hope that you take this comment in the spirit of helpfulness that I mean it to be. Keep up the mastering of the English language. You are doing much better than I am with my German. .. I watch your v8deos faithfully and I think that you have much to teach the novice pool player.

You are a great shooter. I look at the player shooting as much as the shot and result. On many of your shots in the first few games (semi-medium hard to hard stroke), you rise up a little just before you contact the cue ball. Also if you watch your cue during your warm up strokes before hitting the cue balll; your cue wavers up and down a little. These two factors add up to a little inconsistancy from one stroke to another. Now go and watch Ralf. Except on the most forceful stroke, his head, shoulders and upper body stay in the same location and that helps him to be one of the best. Once you've got it right; consistancy is your best friend. I appreciate watching, thanks.

You say you missed the shot on the 2ball by "quite a lot" But what you don't say is what you were trying to accomplish with the shot. I know that good shape was difficult, but at the speed you chose, controlling the Qball seems next to impossible.

Its cool enough you teach so great. Then its cool enough just seeing Ralph walk into the pool hall (I saw that episode too) but to see you play him is awesome. Man you played great. BTW I thought Ralph had a home also in the Philippines? I live in the Manila area and that is what I had heard. Anyways. Thanks for the video as always. I turned my brother onto your channel. Its a stupid move because now he will learn more. Oh well !

Shari, you are a good technical pool player and you let your head get into this match. The logical journeyman approach that you take on your videos is the way you need to play in competition. You've got to be the smooth Sharivari and do exactly as you do when you are giving sound instruction to us. Where is your poker face in the match? Show your opponent the flat-line, smooth, Sharivari that we see in the videos.

Watched the entire match. Read all the comments. Thanks for the great lesson. Pressure was the key issue. Normally the pressure is cash related. You had multiple pressures of concern of your audience and playing a hero. Even though it was a different type of pressure, it had the same result. Find a way to play in the moment. Maybe have someone else committed to call and analyze the match. Playing a pro requires all your attention on the match at hand. Maybe tried to play too perfect at times. The last missed shot on the 7 ball, why not just shoot easy going two rails and play the 8 in the bottom corner? Angle would have been manageable.

I think you played good but I think you should have let yourself play some of the safeties you talked yourself out of. You said it your safety and tactical play was good. You might of had a closer score. Since Ralph was having issues with his return play after.

Sharivari, for future reference, take another look at that 2 ball at 46” in the 5th game. You tried - and failed, at a difficult full table draw shot. I asked in a prior comment, why didn’t you take the easier rail 1st shot on the 2 with the CB hitting the right long rail between the 7 and 8, then touching the left long rail for position on the 4 in the right side pocket? I set it up three times using rail 1st, got perfect on the 4 twice and a bit of a cut on the 4 the other time. Comment?

Around 12:00 in rack 2, is it possible that the two ball could be kicked into the side pocket from the opposite rail? I feel that could've been a better option for him to try, though would it give him good position on the three after the shot? Still an amazing attempt from Ralf to try and make it in the side from a different approach.

I suggest going all over to different places to play tournaments, do it continuously and I'm sure you'll get better. Set a simple goal like, play in a different place once a week or once every two weeks. The funny part is, while you go to these places you'll end up being more nervous on the way there but less and less nervous after you finally get there. Good luck and godbless
