Wow wow wow!! That's amazing results. I am restoring an old Land Cruiser right now and was looking at options to clean some of the parts. Definitely going this route based on your results. Subscribed as well!!
If you add krud cutters metal prep you can completely remove all rust in 30min especially at 70deg celcius
Sweetest manual title/cover ever.
We use white vinegar, works well
Dude, I love that simple Intro. Gave me a good chuckle lol. Tks for the content. I just picked up a 30L unit, and am contemplating doing the valve covers on my Honda pilot, and if I have to tear it down, I'll do the pistons and rings as well. I hear that this can sometimes alleviate the oil consumption of the J35 enginge.
Can you try Kleen strip afterwash? Had a 3400 v6 i took apart to clean up and just happened to have a can of the stuff thought hey why not and to my surprise afterwash almost instantly dissolved all the carbon and I literally just wiped it off with a terry cloth. Give it a try see what you think, you can get the stuff in the paint section of home depot.
I have the cheap plastic harbor freight ultrasonic cleaner that I use for pistons and whatever engine parts I can fit in. The best cleaner I found as far as cheap goes is “Awesome Cleaner” from the dollar store it’s not corrosive. I can put a piston in for 8 minute cycle and it looks like new. If I used just soap and water would take idk an hour.
The worst cheap cleaners are the purple power type ones not only do they not work that great they are corrosive. Literally didn’t clean pistons any faster than soap and water. They don’t even work good for cleaning the floor any my repair shop I use zep brand it’s far better. Plus all those degreasers are corrosive they are terrible for aluminum, they will accelerate rust and corrosion on other metals if not washed off very well soon as ur done. The funny thing is people talk about how great these degreasers are but have to scrub them too. Can you tell I hate these products? lol!!
My Original 2004 Mini S has 285K miles and I need to remove the engine and do all of this to it. I've rescued one other 2003 R53 and two 2005 R52 S models, so we have 4 total. Love these cars but I don't track them.
Did you notice any of the skirt anti-friction coating coming off? This may be my new go to for carbon removal if its not too harsh on the pistons
Didn’t seem to affect anything on the surface. The stuff pretty mild overall. Got on my hands without any problems and is safe to dump down the drain.
Put them in Upside down and the inside of the piston will be cleaner.
Agh I wish it would clean it faster. I don't got 30 minutes to spare to clean pistons :(
How many kilometers has these pistons ?
Unknown. They were in the second wrecker engine I bought. I believe I was told under 200k kms.
The ones out of my original engine with 160k kms didn’t look nearly this black.

I hope your R53 will be soon on the rooad. And my R53 has the same hyperblue and i do a clutch job very soon. Take care and i like all your videos.
Ring Lands.
Or…. You can just use gasoline and a soft brass bristle brush to agitate. You can add some fuel injector cleaner with PEA (polyetheramine).
Gasoline will dissolve all the carbon and varnish in minutes.. its cheap and simple. Works every time.
I ended up using Berrymans carburetor chem dip in the 1 gal bucket with their parts strainer for $40 U.S. I did 20 minute cycles then applied dawn & agitated with a tooth brush. Multiple 20 min cycles, the 2 harley pistons almost look new. I WISH I FOUND YOUR VIDEO 1 DAY EARLIER......
