OMG I love this song, it was on the charts when I was a young kid going to school, it was the song you would think about when you were keen on a nice girl.. brings back nice memories.
You are right in saying this song is unique. That ocean of sound came from over 600 voices that took 3 weeks to put together in the studio. It was never done any other time in the industry as far as I know. The girl's voice in the middle was actually accidental - the receptionist was used for the piece.
All of the sounds in the background that sound like a synthesizer are actually the voices of the band doing harmonies and having a lot of reverb and such added. The drummer said it was crap and they were just about to scrap the whole thing. Then the writer/singer heard the studio’s secretary singing it - and the window-cleaner whistling it, so they put it out and it became their biggest hit. He wrote it about the girl he fell in love with at 18 and three years later became his wife.
10CC were in a category of their own. They were two camps: The pop sensibilities of Gouldman and Stewart, and the art rock sensibilities of Godley and Creme. Both styles come together here. After the band broke up, Godley and Creme recorded a very memorable mid-80's song "Cry".
10cc are a favourite of mine. Great musicians, clever and often satirical lyrics and sophisticated production. Waterfall is another track of theirs that I like.
I watched a documentary about this song and they were talking about how they got the background vocals (sounds like chants). Its actually a multi-tracker of 70 voices. It was a lot of work with 1970's technology to create this sound. When I think of soft hits of the 70's this song would be in top 10.
I ran across this kind of guy all the time. After my son was born and I became a single mother, I realized the psychosis I put myself through trying to accommodate these men. Guess that's why when my son got married, I breathed a sigh of relief. A man admitting he was in love, and not afraid to commit.
10cc loaded a Melatron with a 1000 taped voices that could be played through the keyboard to make that background sighing. When they broke up half went on to be top producers of TV commercials.
Wonderful song and wonderful reaction. Thanks :) Björn Ulvaeus in ABBA once said that this song was the inspiration for him to write "My Love My Life" , which also is a wonderful song that I think you should listen to.
Hats off to ya, IndianCouple for playing some lesser known older bands, in which as this track professes, also issued forth some really great tunes. Most won’t get it...you two got it...it is a song of irony as the guy is truly in love, but doesn’t want to admit it to her nor himself...
That's only 3 voices recorded over a 3 week period, on 16 tracks, adjusting the voice levels on the sound board to match the music's chord changes. Which ultimately came out to sounding like 624 voices on the backing track...Pretty creative, for the time...Of course with today's digital electronics the studio is a whole different thing, making this process, obsolete...There is a short Doc. on YT, with the members telling how they went about it...Very interesting.
So, after they released this song, people wanted to know if the guy in the song ever changed his mind? And on a later album, they released "The Things We Do for Love", which is like the follow-up to this song.
There was a great deal of recording engineering innovation for this song. They created a vocal synth recording harmony voices in every note and chord. What we hear is a keyboard generating the background vocals.
Interesting that there is only one short passage of bass guitar, bass ,one in the whole song. The bottom seems to be held down by the vocal and maybe the fender piano. The guitar chords are there as rhythm section, but blended in well with the mass of vocals and harmonics, guitar (rhythm) is mostly alone except for the bass drum which is muted and not very pronounced, more like a human heartbeat keeping the track in time. The middle 8 and ending have this cyclical piano loop or synth that gives a really haunting feel. Along with the amazing Rhodes, the sparser grand piano parts add tremendously. I just love this song and such a clever arrangement.
Thanks for another thoughtful review! I’d be interested in hearing your reaction to John Waite’s “Missing You”. It’s in the same genre, but in the 80's.
I don't think it's about men handling rejection. I think it's about the idea that men are often brought up to see the displaying of emotion as a weakness, and consequently, see it as stronger to ignore emotion ("big boys don't cry") and at times some men might extend this to even denying emotions when they do actually feel love, writing it off as something trivial ("it's just a silly phase I'm going through")
There were basically 2 10CC's, with Godley and Creme and then without them. Godley and Creme went on to success in both recording, song like Strange Apparatus and Cry. The other two original guy formed a band called Wax, with a song with a brilliant video called Building a Bridge To Your Heart.
When you think about it, why write a song about something you’re not? No. I think Shakespeare’s line “The lady doth protest too much.” get’s to the mystery of the lyrics of this song. The singer is protesting way too much here. There’s no question that he is in love, but he must find a way to deny that fact. The lyrics are mysterious and the singer is definitely in love with a woman who is unavailable to him for some reason. Maybe she’s already married. She might be off limits because they’re cousins - The song tells a story that leaves a lot to the imagination. Next time you listen to “I’m Not In Love” by 10cc, listen to it from the perspective I laid out above.🙏🙂
The real truth of this very popular song is this guy is love with this girl, but is scared of rejection. He doesn't say if he hasn't been rejected, but is scared of it or if he has dealt with rejection, but it was a nasty rejection. Maybe he has, maybe he hasn't. The voice of telling him "be quiet, big boys don't cry" is the voice of his mother.
The 1970's in America was known as the "me" decade and emotional attachments were unpopular in pop culture. People were expected to not form attachments to the ones they developed feelings of love for, which is counterintuitive to traditional courting. Another song from the same era that spoke of the same topic is "Never Too Close," by Gordon Lightfoot.
Did either of you listen to this kind of music before in India?? What kind of music do people listen to in India....Pop-country-Hip Hop-Easy listening-Rock?? Just curious. You 2 make a good couple. Thx for this upload.
I've always thought he was in denial of his feelings for her, and had to keep saying it, to convince himself that he wasn't. Why must people make it so hard? If you love someone, tell them. If not, let them go, so that person can move on with their lives'...
I feel the same way. Whether he was trying to convince himself he wasn't in love with her, or just didn't want to admit it, I don't know. But he obviously had fallen for her. I think we've all been there. I think of a few relationships that I believe could have been great, if I had just said something.
@@heft1983 ~ That's true for me too. I've had relationships in the past where I didn't want to fall in love. And I would do everything to sabotage the relationship... But that was when I was young and dumb...😒
@@Deborahtunes I guess we live and learn as we go along. I think, feeling the need to guard our feelings, we miss out on what could have been maybe the best relationship of our life. I do try not to stay in the past, though. Hopefully I've learned to trust more and be more open to taking chances.

Great reaction. This is such a creative song in how they put it together. 10cc is very underrated.
Lyle Smith insanely underrated
This 70's charttopper is a masterpiece with its magical lyrics and ethereal sound track 💏 Great reaction Enoma 💞

Afraid of being in love. Beautiful song.
10cc were pretty much “untouchable”. This song is analog production’s finest hour.
I like the way you put that!🗿
Haha You're in love, dude.
Just admit it.
Great song by a very underrated band.
They were were never underrated. Up there with the best in their day.
I have had the honour to see this 3 times . I was never disappointed .

Great song. I really like the Fender Rhodes electric pianio played by Eric Stewart, who also sings. It really creates the mood.

This is quite famous in the music world at the time

Nice couple

a secretary in there office next to where they where recording this was the voice singing big boys don't cry

Exactly= Your perception.
In the summer of 1974, a young guy might "handle" rejection that way. Great memories. Fine choice.

What's that river in Africa ..... Oh yeah DE--NILE ✌️♥️
One of the best break-up songs ever made!
It ain't one. He's in self-denial dude.
I think he was trying to convince himself that he was not in love more than was her.
He obviously IS in love, he is just scared to admit it.
Great song. Heard it yesterday in the car on local AM radio. Followed by "Daniel" by Elton John. Classic AM radio staples!
Loads of multi track layering for all the "backing" vocals you're listening to.
He's in self-denial if you don't already know.
Desde Tijuana México saludos

The "1970s in America" except that 10cc were a British band.
And this song was sarcastic , he wrote as his then girlfriend and future wife asked him to write her a love song.

I love "Olive's" version of this
This song is an exercise in irony and denial. He is VERY MUCH in love, but is ashamed or afraid to admit to it.
I've always thought he was in denial of his feelings for her, and had to keep saying it, to convince himself that he wasn't.
Why must people make it so hard? If you love someone, tell them. If not, let them go, so that person can move on with their lives'...
That's the way I hear it...he's hopelessly in love but he's fighting that commitment thing guys say they hate. He's hooked tho....
