Hey everyone, it feels great to be making videos again! Next week I’ll be looking at a couple of project boats and I’ll be taking you all with me. Don’t forget to check out the link nordvpn.com/wildlings to take advantage of the Nord VPN deal. Thanks to them for helping out the channel with this sponsorship! All the best, let me know if you see any interesting boats! Peace!
Great to see you back at it Captain! Take your time on the new boat. Building a Wharram would be cool, but a proper space to build it would be the most important aspect. The rest is just plywood and epoxy. If circumnavigation is the goal, start there and work backwards and try to get as much, in terms of size, as you can. Bigger boats are generally faster, smoother and safer. A big "musher" from the 80s with a +1 inch thick hull of solid fiberglass would be pretty much bullet proof in any kind of seas you're likely to come across. All you need is a sound hull, all the rest can be upgraded over time. Washington state does have several boat building locations, such as Port Townsend, where your fellow Brit and boat builder, Leo (@Samson Boat Co), is completing Tally Ho, but California has lots, as well and the weather may be a bit warmer, which could help with all the epoxy work. Check out the @Salt&Tar channel and their boat Rediviva. They started a build in Washington state, I believe, and finished in California. The East Coast of America has some amazing old sailing and boat building towns in New England, as well. Check out @Tales from a Shipwright channel here to watch, Lou Sauzede, a true salty dog boat builder in action. The @CaptainQ channel here takes trips many of these quaint, little towns and shares a story on a boat of the week that is for sale (great resource for learning about older boats that might be in your price range). The towns themselves are delightful, but the weather can get a bit yucky in the Winter, just like Old England, I suppose. Further south on the East Coast are places like Oriental, North Carolina that have a long boat building and chandlery tradition too. I'm down in Florida where we have boats galore! There are also lots of warm, cheap places to build them and you can get any materials you may need in virtually any town, so virtually no "shipping" of most things. Even the fish have boats down here. If you should decide on Florida, let me know if you have any questions about any particular places, or facilities. It's a big state with lots of different people and places. We're much more than Miami and Disney. Cheers!
Hey Mark, so happy to see your "soft" landing. You are so fortunate to have such great family and friends and so fortunate to have the wisdom to accept their help and support at this time. I am watching another "sailor vlogger" going through a relationship breakup and it's super painful to see him doing everything wrong, prolonging his pain and suffering, the opposite of you. It's still a tough time for you even with all the support but you are positioned to safely sail these rough seas with your awesome crew and come out a better man at the end. You are a great person with a great story and I'm sure most of us will stick with you regardless of your upcoming content and it's frequency. Take care, keep moving forward. Tim
