    I fully agree with your comment about needing to have your eyes wide open about the state of the academic job market before entering a PhD program if joining the professoriate is the goal. Along with that, I would emphasize that program rank really does need to be taken seriously as it's the most important predictor of academic placement post-PhD. While you may pick the number 4 program over the number 2 program because the number 4 program has better supports, it would be wholly unwise to attend a school ranked 30th if you get into one in the top 10. Of course, this is with the caveat that a finished PhD is better for getting a professorship than an unfinished PhD, so don't go somewhere you'll be totally unhappy.
    Thanks for this video and all the great content lately. I'm so glad I came across your channel a few weeks ago!

    Totally agree: DO NOT TAKE A LOAN for studying PhD, do more research to find suitable country that you might have the right balance of academic training, cost, typical years of graduation.
    I have done mine in Hong Kong, we have a tuition fee of $5432 USD per year, and I completed my studies in 4 years.
    I know in Europe and Australia, PhD are strictly 3 years.
    With a PhD allowance of $30,760 USD per year in Hong Kong, most find it enough to cover tuition fees, rent, and daily expenditure.
    PhD is not a "natural next step", so it is okay to take a year off from college environment, gain skills and professional network before moving ahead.
    It's would be wise to have a conversation with people from different countries and get some information over a coffee (informational interview).

    This video is so informative. My GPA for my undergraduate is not very competitive. Luckily I have realized the importance of the study and managed to complete Postgraduate Certificate Education (international) at University of Nottingham. Also, I just finished a certificate course of International Relations at LSE with a final grade of 89.1%. Meanwhile, the experience of running my own business and teaching AP and A-Level economics at international high schools has given me the confidence that despite my mediocre IQ, I can make it if I work hard enough. And your videos motivated me even more.
    I am kind of surprised by the data you provided that only 0.8% of graduates from Yale ended up working for the government. I personally want to be a diplomat after I get a Ph.D. of Politics or International Relations, but I don't rule out of the chance of going to Academia either. It looks like it is going to be very academically competitive in Yale.
    I also have a question - when applying to universities such as Yale, do they require applicants to have academic articles published in academic journals? Or most of those universities would focus more on the applicants' MA study, dissertation, statement of purpose, etc?

    • @KaelynGraceApple
      @KaelynGraceApple  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comment and the statistics about PhD students ending up in government is based on the history PhD. As for your question, you do not have to have academic articles published before applying but they don’t hurt. I haven’t been formally published yet

    • @sjcctn123
      @sjcctn123 4 роки тому

      Thank you for your answer. I was just thinking it is because the school I went to undergraduate is an ordinary one. And even the school I am going for graduate, Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University would grant me a degree from the University of Liverpool, it may not sound as competitive as other top universities such as Oxford or LSE. So I was figuring publishing academic articles may compensate for that. I contacted my future professor, and he asked me to be more patient about publishing articles. Hence I decided to do more reading, and write down more ideas and frameworks of future articles I am going to write.

    Hey, Kaelyn, I know I’m late to the party but congratulations on Yale! I’m starting my DPhil at Oxford this October after completing my Master’s in the USA, so it seems we’re at the same stage in our academic careers but headed in opposite directions. Aside from Yale being a great fit for your research, what made you decide to not continue at Oxford? Is that something you’ve covered in a previous video?

    • @KaelynGraceApple
      @KaelynGraceApple  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you so much and congratulations on starting your DPhil at Oxford this fall!!! There were several reasons I decided not to stay at Oxford (funding, wanting to return to the US, access to sources, etc.) and I will cover them in my oxford review video soon!

    I wondered if you could advise me on if it matters where you study when it comes to finding a job in a particular country. I’m currently in a fully funded phd in the U.K. and have been approached with an opportunity to join a fully funded phd in the states. I’m not sure whether to take the opportunity or not as I’m already a year into my course in London, although I’d love to work in the states later on down the line. Would you say it’s possible for a British phd to work in the states with ease? Thank you (:

    I have a question about the research proposal. How detailed should it be and how is one sure that it is "good enough" to do in the PhD schooling? Is it common for it to change once you get into your 3rd/4th year? And (last question is) do a bunch of PIs review this proposal and it's based on luck for one to pick you and mentor you? (for clinical neuro lets say)
    p.s this is more leaned towards UK than the US but I'm open for both (and if its not how it works please correct me!)

    The LSE offered 1.5 PhD degree to Taiwan President Tsai in 1984, but the LSE hides Tsai’s viva exam professor name and could not find her thesis in LSE LIBRARY, why the LSE do so? It’s really a shame to all British! No one have ever heard there’s 1.5 PhD in the world, only LSE !
