Great advice, I have also bought several used pressure canner's and use them all. One suggestion, if you are having trouble reading the serial number, take a picture with your phone and then you can enlarge and have an easier time reading it.

Twelve (quit counting at that #) sewing machines and 4 pressure canners (oops - now 5 - neighbor had an older Presto with the plastic handles in her 'free' pile at garage sale - complete!) # older Prestos - shorts and two tall - Water baths too. Ain't addiction wonderful!

You'd never find a used pressure canner in Australia - in fact there's only a couple of places here to buy new ones. When I first started canning ten years ago, there were NO canners in the country, anywhere. I had to buy a new All American from the US, which cost $400 from here, and then shipping was nearly $300. That was for my 21qt canner. Then a couple of years later, I bought a 30qt All American, and with shipping that was nearly a thousand dollars. So $1700 for both.
Now a couple of companies have started stocking one or two Presto, and All American - but they're still hundreds of dollars.
I don't regret a cent of it though, because there are also hardly any long term food storage companies here - and the Mormons in Australia don't do food storage.
I also bought a 9 tray Excalibur and had that shipped here.
If I ever win the lotto, I'm going to start importing all these awesome American things. Lol!!

I was not aware that the Presto could not be used on a propane burner outside, that is good to know. I have been trying to decide between getting the Presto or the All American, but I want to be able to use it on a propane burner as a backup, so I guess you helped me make up my mind.
EDIT: By the way, I decided to check for used and I found an All American #921 with the "old style" top handle like yours, supposedly bought last year but never used. He wanted $300 for it, so I talked to him about it and was about to walk away and he threw in a matching All American #910 for $350 for both canners. The 910 is still in its box, the 921 is out of its box but it still looks brand new, not a scratch on it. More than I was hoping to pay, but it gets me two All American canners so I have the option of processing small or large batches for about what the 921 itself would have cost me new with shipping to Hawaii.

Canners take up a lot of space to collect . Having 2 or 3 is a good idea . SHTF situation they will be needed and traded .
You end up with thawing meat from a freezer canning is the answer .
Yes , you can use canners on all heating units - just so it can take the weight .
Propane , flat tops and even a LOW open fire setting on a grate .
Owning a canner is SMART .

For a second there I thought that was my cat walking in front of my screen! Lol! They could be twins! And my name is Lisa too only spelt differently! It's so funny, when I was younger I was always spelling my name the same as yours, until a very strict teacher called my Mom and said if I continued to spell my name different from her paper work, she was going to deduct 50%from my grade on all work with Leisa instead of Lisa!😩 Needless to say... Lol! 😂 Thought that would give you a chuckle! Can't wait to see more! Have a Blessed Day!

So glad I came across this video! VERY informative. When visiting my Family in Arkansas, I found a 50's USA made aluminum pressure canner made by J.P. Dowell in McKinney TX, where I actually live! Best part, it was $5 at the garage sale!! The aluminum is in great condition, it was beautiful burgundy Bakelite knobs and handle, and even had the rack. I sold it on eBay for $120 plus shipping, and UPS damaged the handle in shipping despite being packed extremely well (cracked the handle right down the middle). It's just been sitting in my pantry, awaiting handle repair, but after finding this video, I think I'm going to keep it and get into canning/food preservation. With the way things are heading, I think it's more valuable than I originally thought, and not from a monetary value. Thank you so much for the video!

I really like using the weight as the gauge on my presto pressure canner. I can babysit it by sitting in the same room working on a jigsaw puzzle and look up at it to check its dance . . . and mostly hearing it jiggling away at the proper weight. I am new this year to pressure canning but am greatly enjoying it. Thank you for posting your wonderful videos.

I have a gold Sears & Roebuck canner (no gauge) that my father-in-law gifted me with back in the 1970s, which was my main canner until purchasing a new All American 921 last winter. I remember, 40 years ago, just starting out, I used an empty tomato juice can to water bath (strawberry jam I think it was) one jar at a time. It could handle up to a pint jar, if I wanted tomatoes or canned fruit. I'm in southwest Ontario, and although it is the most heavily populated part of Canada, we do not have anywhere near the density that you do. I started with an electric pressure canner (don't cringe, it was easy, affordable and I loved it). When I decided that I wanted to continue and add to my canning, I looked around and decided on the All American. It had, really, no parts that would need replacement, as I considered the gauge sort of a back up and relied on the weighted gauge (however, on a side note, one of the knobs crumbled, ???, but I was able to order a replacement). Since this was during the lock down, there were no garage or rummage sales, so had to buy new. $530 with exchange and delivery. When I went to register it, I needed some info I had neglected to print out, so went back on line. Well. Three weeks (I think they strapped it to a turtle for delivery) and that model was then selling for $703 USD.

My hubby has rebuilt the first one we ever bought new.. Why do I have more? They are priceless. I will confess that I really don't like the ones you have to buy gaskets for as they don't last as long as they use to. But it is the one I most common use.. It has been at least ten years since then, and I had given up hope of finding an owner's manual for it, let alone replacement parts! That link is a valuable thing! And yes, I'm still using the canner!

I have 3 of the gold one. I have had 2 of them running at the same time several times this summer. I did over 250 jars so far this summer, with a fall crop just planted of several veggies to can in a few months.

every grandma had one, so true. we have two like the ones on your left that I doubt we gave anything over 10 dollars each, then the new one, we found an autoclave thats built off of an all american pot with an electric element and control on it for $20. There are literally millions of them out there, its just finding them.

Just ordered a used Presto Canner today!!! A vintage 21 qt! Can't wait! Instead of waiting to see what the seal is like I went a head and ordered a new seal and plug from one of your suggested places! I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I have an American 941. You read that right, and I paid full price for it. I can do a full crop of anything with it. No, I am not going to sell it. The day I can no longer lift the bottom to the stove top, I will sink it into concrete and turn it into a hot tub.

Oh hi Leisa, pressure canners galore. Loved your informative chat last night. The info you offered is amazing. I really thought it was one of the best that we have to realize our lives how they are today, our food and grain supplies. Thank you. I’ve always used the water bath. My mom and mother in law taught me a lot over the years. You’ve taught us so much. God bless you. You’ve inspired us yes you all your utube friends also especially Heather.. thanks 👍👍❤️❤️🌻🌻

Thanks for the website! I need some parts for a small canner I bought for $4 at a garage sale, it even had the instruction manual in it! I think it only holds 4 pints, but, hey sometimes that's all you need to process! Now to find it and get the serial number off of it...think it's called a can-o-matic or something, if that tells you the age of it, lol. Love the green and yellow canners, so jealous right now! 😍

You buy pressure canners the same way I buy cast iron. :) I'm planning on doing a little tutorial later this week on operating Presto canners, hopefully explain a couple of things they don't mention in the instructions. Fun fact, Presto's corporate headquarters and one of their factories is about 50 miles from me. The factory has been closed for a long time and the old timers still refer to it as "pressure cooker" as in "He used to work over at pressure cooker back in the 70's" even though that particular factory never made appliances, only artillery shell casings.

I grew up learning from my mom with a Presto, then someone gave her an All American, and she used it for years. I have the Presto, and one of the water bath canners, but discovered it did not do well with a smooth glass top range. I found a stainless steel water bath with a smooth bottom, and it worked perfectly for that stove top. Now I have a gas cook top which I love for canning. Great finds and buys.

I love your enthusiasm! Hadn’t even thought about looking for a used one and I live in the middle of a “canning culture” and estate sales all over the place.
I use an old soup pot that belonged to my parents for a water bath canner. The glass turn table in my microwave fits perfectly in the bottom and gives me the use of all the diameter of the pot.

My grandmother gave me her old pressure canner. I went and bought a new gasket and pressure plug setup for it, and had it shipped from Arizona to Newfoundland. I tried using the canner, and burned myself trying to remove the lid after cooling the unit for an hour or more. The lid or pot lip was warped. I had to beat the lid off. I took the pressure canning parts from it and gave it to my sister in law to use as a hot water canner (I didn't want anyone to attempt to pressure can in it again for safety reasons). I plan on looking for another canner to use the replacement parts I have now. In the meantime, I went and got a new T-Fal one, and am using my old Mirro one.

Your first one is probably better quality.
I have an Amish stainless steel water bath that holds 15 qts. I have a water bath granite that does nine quarts. Biggest granite I ever saw! Also have a seven pint granite.
Was gifted a 30 qt. All Amercian. Glorious thing!!! Also have a Mirro 22 qt. Which does 7 qts and sixteen pints.
I ordered replacement parts for mine just in case So glad too they are much pricier now!
I passed up two Mirro canners at thrift stores. Both were $10. My other half was so unhappy. Said never to pass one up again. Haven't seen one since!

I have three All American 921 canners and another one that I inherited that is going to need some work. The gasket was stuck in the grove and i have been able to get a lot of it out of the grove, but needs more work. Ill test it out after I can get the gasket grove cleaned out.

Thanks for this wonderful information. I join your Canuary and was viewing older videos. Glade I found this one. I found my canner when I cleaned out my mother's house and wanted to replace the seal at least since I don't remember her ever using it but know that it must be older since I've been moved away for 30 years now.

I just recently purchased a sears 21 quart pressure canner, needed a seal, but the gauge tested perfect. Also luckily it came with the manual and the previous owner had attached a card to the last page listing the new seal number since sears is no more.

this lady knows her stuff!!! a tip, a bit of steel wool and some elbow grease will help reveal the model number on the canner. found this out while trying to find a seal ring for moms old mirro m-0622. turns out, the model number was not changed but the date of manufacture required 2 different seals. found the date with the steel wool. btw, as of today here in the pacific nw on craigslist there are 5 or 6 used canners. if you're a prepper, get to prepping.
