Good morning Jeff, single handed narrowboating is not for the faint hearted! Great to see you & Gladys moving at last & a relief it was calm weather at the time. Every time I see someone put down their windlass I expect it to be left behind, if it was me I'd paint the part of it you don't hold to turn it dayglo yellow to make it stand out in the grass as a visual reminder to pick it up again. Look forward to the next video, enjoy having your feet on firm ground over the next few weeks!
Hiya Annie! Thanks for the comment and all your encouragement. Yes, most windlasses are a bland steel colour, so I may do what you suggest, or wrap some coloured tape around one end. I'm firmly on dry land now - hoping to go and visit Gladys in January but wont be moving her again til February. Cheers!
@Gladysthenarrowboat Hi Jeff, I've painted my bradawls in different noticeable colours because I use them outside a lot & they'd disappear as soon as I put them down. Much easier to spot now. Roll on February!
@@anniemac3075 Sounds like good thinking Annie! Yes roll on February... and roll on Wednesday when BT says our fibre cable will be repaired. Im having to hotspot with my mobile phone now and the mobile signal isn't great!
Hi couple of tips. Make sure you use your fairleads, it’s much easier to control the boat on the centreline. Don’t stray too far from the front paddles in case you need to shut down quickly if something goes wrong (better to open one paddle fully than both half way up - easier to shut down quick in an emergency when you are on your own). Always lift fenders before entering a lock. Enjoy your boat, have fun, lovely videos.
Hi and thanks for the good advice! Im going to get some full length fenders that I can clip on and off, as the slim sausage shape things that Aintree fits, are quite ineffective - I'd certainly be lifting them up when in locks. They're already on my Xmas present list! Cheers!
As already a subscriber , your welcome Jeff . Nice to see your taking short trips out. Best way to get used to Handling Glady's . Here's hoping that we Beetle owners get to come together next year. Nice video too.
Hi Simon! Yes, thanks so much for already subscribing. It was a useful few weeks and I learned quite a lot from it. Can't wait to take Gladys out again in February - Beetles are fab boats aren't they - hopefully meet up next year!
Good Morning Jeff, most enjoyable drive out of the Marina and back again. getting the feel of Gladys canal and going through the lock etc all experience and the feel of things. And lets hope the weather starts to improve soon. You seem to be handling things ok. can't wait for spring to come, As always Great editing and stay safe out there.😊
Hi John! Thanks for the comment as always - and liking the editing, thats much appreciated. Oh yes, this weather has been a real test - can't wait for the spring and the real adventures start!
I really enjoyed your solo lock handling, it was very helpful because I will be doing the same very soon, before Christmas. My boat will be delivered soon to Aqueduct and my little practice run will be the same distance that you did. So thank you, really enjoyed, picked up a lot of tips, especially to take one’s time through the locks.
Hi Coral! Glad you found the videos helpful. Best of luck with the launch - but you need have no worries with the guys at Aqueduct handling it, they're brilliant. Just stand back and enjoy the moment! Have fun trying out the short trips - in either direction from the marina. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to message me - either on Gladys's facebook, or by email Cheers, Jeff
Thanks Madison! Thanks as always for the nice comment. Yeah - I feel sorry (and have much admiration) for the hardy people who are 365 days a year liveaboards, moored out on the canals. Tough people!
@@MadisonTen yes you're right, at this point, I must admit to being glad I'm safely on dry land. My internet ability is limited at the minute (mobile phone outdoors... ) but I'll take a look at your latest as soon as I can. Going back inside now! Best wishes!
Hi Paul! Thanks, Im glad you found it interesting. Yes, its a mystery to many people, but actually a technology thats stood the test of time without much change!
Hi Jeff. Great to see Gladys and yourself out on the water. It looked like a nice day out, albeit a bit cold may be, but you dressed prepared which was good and compliments on your fine Hi Vis coat. Not being a boater myself I wouldn't know if your Lock technique was perfect or not. You went in, operated the gates and came out and it all looked good to me. A few people commenting on your windlass and where you leave it, I think as long as it's away from the water when not in use is all that matters. However, when you decide to nip on to the Worcester and Birmingham and cruise into Birmingham, I would suggest keeping your windlass close to your person. Some of our local Brummy towpath toe rags would think nothing of nicking it or simply throwing it in the canal, and their level of intelligence would leave them wondering why they ever did it 😂 I'm looking forward to your tour of Gladys, hopefully in your next video 🤞 See you in the next installment Jeff, take care mate👍👍👍
Hi Dave! Thanks as always for the encouraging comment! Im so happy with that jacket - just £35 in screwfix. I think boating techniques vary somewhat and on some vlogs Ive seen, boaters seem to take less care than me - but some of the comments made so far have been reasonable, although at the end of the day, I did manage ok - always room for improvement of course - and I have never claimed to really know what I'm doing! Also, its distracting trying to film it all at the same time - I have to think of that too - hence I took it nice and slow. I'll get better with time I'm sure. Lovely observation on your Brummie neighbours Dave - very funny comment about them wondering why! I'll start editing the boat tour tomorrow - our fibre cable was crashed down by a falling tree so at present I'm getting online via my mobile phone as a hotspot - and that wont be powerful enough to upload a 1GB video to UA-cam - BT has said it'll get fixed by Wednesday morning though, so hopefully the tour-video will go up in good time for this Saturday. Thanks again Dave, TTFN.
@@Gladysthenarrowboat Hi Jeff, storm Darragh certainly caused a lot of damage on its tour of the UK. Let's hope you get your broadband up and running asap.
Good vlog nice to see you getting used to the locks with Gladys, I think you should get one of those belts that can carry a windlass I'm sure it would make life easier also from experience I hope you've got a spare one, all the best Rob.😊
Open the gate before closing the paddles because if you have leaking from the gates you’ll close the paddles and then won’t be able to open the gates. Also buy some gloves and a windlass belt
Well done Jeff 👍 you've done brilliantly on your own, enjoyed it.
Thanks Iain - glad you liked it! Cheers, Jeff

Lovely calm information and detailed explanation of what you are doing and why, so mush more interesting your way!
Hi Nigel! Thanks so much for the lovely comment - much appreciated!
Looks like you're getting the hang of the locks. Nice vlog. Stay warm.
Thanks! Though I freely confess that I'm still much of a beginner - lots to learn still! Best wishes, Jeff

@ absolutely. It’s a committed life style. I guess some people probably love the challenge.

Thanks for the video 😀

Thanks Chris - yes good point about closing the paddles. Better gloves are on the list for xmas! I'll think about the belt too.
Ask Janet to buy you a pair of Sealskinz waterproof ultra grip gloves for Christmas. Best wishes John
Thanks John - yes, she's already on the case! All the best my friend and see you in the new year!
8 out off 10 Sorry Yes you put your back to beam every time But Putting windlass on the beam thats a No no
Thanks Trevor - only 8? Well, thats a fair score - Im definitely no expert. Mind you I never move the beam with a windlass on it. Cheers!
