Bealtaine is definitely a little piece of heaven on earth. Increasing age and decreasing mobility have necessitated a move much further south after 50 years in one house. I miss all my trees, I miss the green grass, I miss all the plants and flowers, I miss the birds. I really miss the rain. My feeder and bird bath that used to be crowded with so many different birds has seen one regular wood pigeon in a month. The tiny garden has no insect friendly plants and the ‘lawn’ is plastic. Even the earth doesn’t smell ‘earthy’. Outside in the evening or early morning there is no heavy perfume of a living garden. I know that I was no longer able to care for my old acre, but this will be a new challenge, to invite Mother Earth back to this tiny sterile ‘oldies’ garden and bring some life back into it.

I feel your pain. 7 years ago we moved from our little homestead of 30 years. It’s tough with the health issues. I miss it so much. We live with HOA rules now😢. But I’ve managed to cover the deck in the back of the house with lots of potted plants. And snuck vegs into my flower beds. Sadly health issues are getting worse so I may have to give even that up. But we do what we can😊

I was homeless for years and I planted gardens everywhere I was living.
I also cleaned up old graveyards and planted roses. ground covers and other types of plants that provided beauty and a celebration of the people who were buried there.
I always picked up trash everywhere I went and found a place to stay for a while that was beneficial for me and the environment.
It was my choice to live with no home and to enjoy life without any kind of support, plans and learning to live with what I needed rather than just what I want ❤😊

I feel anytime someone rescues an old home, it's wonderful. Whether they stay or not, it's saved and loved and "home" for someone. Sometimes it takes a while for people to acclimate to nature, especially if they've always been city dwellers. Kudos to those people with the tenacity to jump in to such big projects. You should feel proud to be such a perfect example of such.

Hi from Scotland. Our weather is similar, but it keeps our country lush and green. I only have a quarter acre, but like yourself I have planted 5 fruit trees, fruit bushes, bamboo hedges, herbs. A lot taken from cuttings. I have created something quite cheaply. You just have to be patient and let it grow. I love my garden, it wraps around so my dogs and cat snuffle, come for walks with me, investigating what is growing. We have friendly horses over our back as we are out in the countryside. Our view panoramicially are stunning. I have an army of little ants, lots of slaters under wood and some damp places, bees, slugs of course. Wee horrors ate my strawberries 🍓 lol. Birds, butterflies, a hedgehog to name a few. I feel so more at peace at home, tranquil, my brain is quiet.. I always speak to Mother Earth and my angels. I always have gratitude and love my Earth. Thanks for speaking up for our planet. We need more people like you. ❤

It’s actually a wonderful thing that newcomers have decided in some measure to buy rural homes and property in Ireland, and rescue them, bring them back to life, rather than let them sink into irreversible ruin like the many thousands sitting out in the elements now. Most who want a life in the countryside are there for a life of nature and gardening and some measure of homesteading. Ireland is less expensive than other attractively safe and fertile western countries, so right now it’s popular for those seeking to make a healthy change. If a few of them make UA-cam channels, all the better. Just like your channel, those content creators make money, yes, but also help send a good message about living naturally, reclaiming a traditional life, rebuilding old structures and giving them new life, and valuing life the way it should be valued. UA-cam can be a tremendous force for good, even though social media is often the opposite.

Hello from the beautiful northern California! You have done amazing work, your love for nature is seen in the beautiful paradise you have created. It's true that if we are in harmony and love with nature, it doesn't matter if it raining, foggy, cold, or gray outside but we always find beauty in it. I love to see your place, I wish everyone would have the chance to experience what you and I have found. It's the best therapy against depression and other dark beats mining people's minds these days. I was born with a condition that expressed itself with fury in my early 30ths, and in my 50ths it limited my mobility and I stopped working. I'm 64 now and what has kept me sane and happy, even over painful days is my love for nature. I don't have the big garden I used to have, but on a minor scale, I created a new small, and beautiful paradise. Thank you for sharing your vision, your feelings, and your creations. 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤

Rainy day musings - poignant reflections. There is such beauty in the Three Acre Wood and within Bealtaine Cottage itself because of your Inner Disposition, Colette. Though my heart and soul long for a more rural setting, my life with my husband has been urban, for the most part. But each morning I now spiral my way up onto the rooftop where I can see before me the sea 5 miles in the distance. The Parthenon 🏛 stands to the west of us rising above the coral-like homes of the Athenians. The sky arches Blue with clouds beaming Pink - awaiting the White Sun’s appearance over the top of the mountain to the East. On our morning walks we encounter many cats and often a neighbor, with whom we stop to gossip and catch our breath before continuing up the several hills. I notice the trees blossoming, fruiting, casting their leaves and flowers upon the ground. Wild Oregano grows through cracks at the curb. Often plants thrown to the curbside take root and become part of the ever shifting “landscape” in the city. As you say, “Love of Nature” matters greatly - no matter where your dwelling may be. 🌺🍃🌱🪴 -V

That's sounds like a great afternoon. I love a bit of John Nettles ❤ All then is needed is a pot of tea, sandwiches, and a cat on my lap(I can't have a dog, after my dog Sammy, the love of my love) You've lovely close-up shots of the garden there. So nice to hear your voice and talk about nature and the rain. I really loved how you showed doing up your kitchen because it reminded me of when I was doing my kitchen. I'd have days where I was thinking about what I need to be doing and then before I knew it was dinner time. I remember about 15 years ago, being up a chair painting the kitchen a colour called mango. I had got curtains from heatons in cornflower blue. Also then reminiscing about painting my Aunts kitchen a colour called rubber duck and getting swirl and fluer de lis stamps and making a border like a dado rail height out the stamps with alternating burgundy colour and an orange colour. That I got done in one day. Sorry for long message, I go on a ramble sometimes. I need tae now 😂

As an American who is seriously considering moving abroad permanently, I also wonder , who wants us? I do not want to assume we are wanted. So many places have rents climbing our of reach for the locals but might be affordable to someone form away. It doesnt feel fair here and I am guessing it doesnt feel fair there. I can imagine that maybe few Irish want to restore an old farm but I am also guessing there are many that would but can't afford. I dont want to be a wanker! I think if you are doing up an old cottage I would say fair play to you. Its such hard work and it's a shame to see the old cottages go into decline. I live in a 300 year old Irish cottage and it's a money pit, we have our own septic tank no main drainage and it's very expensive to put in or replace, a lot of places in the country don't have wi fi so that's another consideration. That's what puts a lot of young people off. But if you want to do it, go for it. Also you will have to accept it rains a lot.

We all have to learn to make a special effort to keep our own personal choices of what we do and how we treat ourselves and the environment with tenderness and nurturing. Every single moment is a new beginning and the opportunity to experience peace and understanding through our own focusing on the love of life unfolding in the mystery moment by moment with wonderment and creativity.
You don't have to move to the idealistic dream of the grass being greener somewhere else. Make a wonderful contribution to your own life and create a sanctuary that is fulfilling your needs and your life unfolding in the mystery moment by moment with creative passion and inspiration to make a difference in your life now as you are now regardless of the circumstances.
Community gardening is a great resource for centering our lives with abundance of plants and community.
Even a single plant in a window is a great way to get a better feel of how much nature can help us in our lives with love, attention and the ability to connect with nature.

Dearest Colette, I found you here years ago but something occurred, I don’t know what, and I left your channel…sad to say. And now something else has occurred, I’m not certain but I can feel it, and I’m back with open arms and open heart. I’d always been a lover of Mother Nature and She with me, as seen here on your channel…this channel, this wondrous love affair eternal. You are, that I’ve found today, the most ardent human heart and hands…and spirit of Mother Earth/Terra. You are Gaia incarnate…now fully grown. However, your human self needs your attention as you’ve given everything and everybody in your sphere. This you already know. Earth Angels surround you with deep love and gratitude. You are the Blessing❣️ Sounds all gushy, I know…💚
P.S. I’m a single 71 yo presently residing in NorCal in USA. My mother’s mother was Irish 💚
So much love to you ❤️

Such wise words. I’ve stopped watching some irish cottage renovations utubes as they just seem to be focusing on to be honest destroying all the habitat around the cottage before they have even started, and not considering the impact they are making. I have somewhere to cook and clean and a fire but just concrete on the floor and many jobs to do in house but I felt I owed it to the land to observe and nurture it as a priority. Thank you so much for this video it makes me feel better. You’re a true inspiration.

I 100% agree with you on “it’s not what’s inside, but what’s outside.” My family & I have always looked at WHERE the house sits & have settled for a smaller home just because of where it sits…always looking to be close to water & lots of trees. We stay outside so much more than we are indoors.

Oh, Colette, you are so right. Life is really very simple. The purpose of life is love: love for one another and love for Mother Earth, and when we do, we become one with nature. You have achieved that, and the result is magical. Love and blessings to you!❤ Thank you for sharing your wisdom. ❤

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! Gardening and creating a habitat for the plants and animals has brought me so much peace after so much grief and loss. I love the rituals of watering, planting, and filling the bird feeders. I sit with my coffee or pot of tea and lose myself in the paradise I have helped create. So Magical. Your life, work and garden inspires me to go deeper. Thank you!

Thank you for this particular video. I live in San Diego CA USA. Retired last year after fifty years at a very stressful job. I cannot afford to do much as I retired without much savings. But I was completely exhausted. I needed time off and now I'm depressed. I've always loved nature. And animals, horses and cats mostly. And plants. Its been in the 90's this summer. My plants are dying. I'm so tired of the heat. Wish we have smellavision , would love to smell the rain where you are, and the greenery. This video is just what I needed tiday, toget out in nature, even if its not the perfect weather. I will go to the beach tomorrow or a park. Thank you dear. Say hi to Patsy for me🐶

Your garden and property is beautiful. As much as I try to plant trees, shrubs, herbals and vegetables, here in central Ontario Canada I am in a constant battle with the deer and they eat everything!! I have to fence everything I want to keep or constantly spray a smelly homemade concoction that they don’t like. They are beautiful creatures and their babies are very cute so it’s a bit of a love hate relationship. Do you have deer in Ireland? Your videos bring me much peace, joy and inspiration. You are a wise woman😊 Blessings to you.

What an oasis of sanctuary you have created in this place out of love and hard work, amazing how beautiful. You have green fingers and a sense of what grows and a creativity of what is relevant. Nurturing and knowing and creativity has made this little sanctuary so perfect. I understand your yearning to create a safe place. I can see it in your little dog that loves to run out of the house.. My journey to find peace, was after living three decades abroad I came back home to northern Ireland, with my jack russell Georgie, who I lost last year, he loved it and I miss him still. This is the place I was born, been back here eight years and I don't regret my choice to do that, it just feels right somehow, even though people say you should never go back. I came to a small town by the sea, have lovely people in this community that respect each other, are there for each other, great music, say hello to each other, are there to help each other if need be. I am an artist I am creative in another aspect, and dabble in the greenery and enjoy my neighbours. who can enlighten me on the names of the plants that pop up in my garden. Thank you for showing what you have created and the rain, it has been quite a rainy summer this year!

I found a lot where I live which backs onto a greenbelt. We put in lots of windows and decks and it feels like living in a treehouse even though I’m in the suburbs. Bears wander through my backyard in the summer. It does make a difference being near nature. I love the colours in your sweet cottage.

Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Your garden looks incredible in all weathers. I wouldn`t mind dish washing wiith that view. You are so correct about us needing to live with nature. There are certain people who would pave over everything if they could and don`t seem to care about the danger. Greed and wanting to build! build! build! Anyway.....back to inside your house I think your choice of colour for dresser is lovely. Hugs to Patsy E X

I'm in the middle of building an art studio/apartment out of my son's garage. My yard portion is my biggest joy so far...we don't have the usual "lawn" because we took out the lawn and have been working on a beautiful sustainable ecosystem that has the neighbors now doing the same with their spaces. It's been a grand time in this neighborhood. Even the opossum is showing up now and then for a visit with a few bunny buddies🐇🌻

It truly was a huge project when you bought the place. Here in Florida U.S.A., if there isn't any lightning, I work outside in the rain in our many long hot months. It cools me and keeps the bugs away. I can't imagine that you will ever regret your decision to take on your project.
