I love Mia Farrow in this movie. She was so funny! She also really occupied the character. When I watch, I have to remind myself that it's acting and not an actual person.
“And now, the makers of Lady Lydia Facial Cream bring you Sally White and her Gay White Way...” This is all quite reminiscent of Lena Lamont trying to learn to speak for her first sound film role in “Singin’ In The Rain”: “And i cahn’t steeand him!”
Absolutely, I'm 54 y.o. and loved it since it premiered, 70's/80's were i.m.o. the best years for W.A., very few in the 90's and then Midnight in Paris, that's all.

Not only did they nail the old- time New York accent - they nailed it for the 1930’s and 40’s in particular. My Brooklynite mother (b. 1950) and her peers never spoke like Farrow’s character but my great aunt, born 1929, *did*. So they’ve nailed in this film not only the NY accent, as such, but the NY accent with generational nuance. Less Marisa Tomei’s character in my cousin Vinny and more Aunt Bethany from Christmas Vacation (Mae Questel, born 1908 in New York City), who also spoke like my great aunt.

I recently read a professional review of "Requiem for a Dream" that, as far as I could tell, was written by a 21st-century transplant to Brooklyn from elsewhere in the country. He made a wry comment to the effect that "the only thing regrettable about Ellen Burnstyn's performance is her rendering of the New York accent. Meanwhile, I had been impressed by Burnstyn's accent -- greatly impressed -- and had thought to myself "she talks just like my Aunt Renee" (who lived in Flatbush, Brooklyn, came of age in the 1940's, and who was sixty-something in the late 1970's, precisely when "Requiem" was supposed to take place). This overconfident critic had erred in his assessment because he wasn't as familiar with New York speech as he thought he was. Burnstyn's performance reinforced my appreciation for the professionalism of actors who prepare their roles far more than may be evident to others, apparently, at first blush. The critic's comfortably knee-jerk reaction was that the accent was just "bad, bad."
I've never really cared for Woody Allen, but I love this movie. It just glows with another time period, right down to its muted palette and excellent art design, another period I really wish I could see and experience for myself, just once. This is the closest to doing so that I ever can, I guess...
I experienced this world about 9 years later, in 1952, as a small child. The interiors were the same, people still wore clothes, the hairstyles and drove cars from the 1940's and radio was not yet completely dead. I had an aunt who was a local gangster's mistress. And roller rinks hadn't yet been driven out of business by the insurance companies. The 1950's didn't look like "the fifties" yet. My memories are of magical times with my extended family.
I grew up in NY and in order to get a job in broadcasting I was told to lose my Longg Gighland accent so this scene makes me laugh with the memories.

Peter Bogdanovich's 'Paper Moon' (1973) (with Ryan and Tatum O'Neal) also evokes the 1930s. Well worth a viewing.
