Pete for me is always the greatest fast court player ever.
Sampras is the example of the complete player in tennis.
The acquisition of complete mastery, nothing to do with modern tennis players.
I remember very well that every technical shot he made was done with classy finesse

Spoken like an old timer (no offence) I grew up with the much better tennis era let’s be real here. This looks amateurish relatively speaking compared to the quality that is Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Murray. It’s not the same you’re right, it’s superior in every way.

Sampras had a serve that combined a lot of pace & extreme spin (like Nadal's forehand), brilliant placement of serve, the Slam dunk smash shots, brilliant net play, excellent touch, tenacity, tremendous forehand, deadly passing shots, phenomenal athleticism, a backhand that can produce winners, heart, nerves of steel etc. Sampras, one of the very greatest players, ever.

You're right. Impressed particularly by his amazing net play (reaction time, touch, placement, general command) and cross-court & baseline passing shots. Also, he was looking always it seems to find the end of the point, rather than just outlast the other guy. Appreciated the killer instinct!
Amazing legs for covering the court, too! The way he chased & tracked balls in the open court is legendary!
I believe in his prime Pete was the greatest grass court player of all time. Roger has been amazing but he got most of his big wins after Pete and Andre and before Nadal hit his prime. Roger had an entire era with no real challenges. Andy Roddick was the toughest opponent he had for a while so his big number of titles isn't as impressive as it sounds. Amazing player but the Joker passed him and Nadal during their prime.
I know its late…I wasn’t quite into any sport until I watched Pete played against Agassi ai Indiana Wells in 1995, then I came to realize that there’s one sport could be so beautiful and attracting, and the way Pete played was so elegant and unique.Throughout my college life Pete was one my spiritual supports and I followed nearly every match he played as much as I could.
He’s my GOAT and always will be. Happy bday Pete, can’t imagine you are 50 now. Thank you for the memory all along my youth…

if I think so too, no matter how many tennis players are born, none will fill me like Pete, it was beautiful to see him play, perfect mix between silky movements and electricity on the network, the only thing I regret in this life is not being able to see him play in HD quality.
Once we are done with all this silliness about who has the most grand slam titles ever , can we all agree that Sampras was THE PERFECT tennis player. He was Sui Generis. In point 29, he moves like a Grandmaster moves his pieces on a Chess Board.

The real goat of tennis. Only player to dominate an era. The only player to stay ranked number 1 for 6 consecutive years and has a definitive winning record against all of his rivals
no chance. His only main rival was Agassi who was a baseliner who had the wrong game for his era so Sampras had so many easy free points on his serve
@@guitarreilly lmao you must of just started watching tennis. Because Sampras didn’t just have Andre. He had Ivanisevic, Rafter, Becker, Krajicek, Courier, Chang, Henman, Rusedski, and Hewitt. These are Sampras top ten rivals. That man even faced Lendl and Edburg. So yeah pretty stacked rival. Not to mention a courts played faster then anything in the 2000s and definitely compared todays game.

Disagree, Sampras had a very weak backhand on clay and his shoulder size shots were often very neutral.
He had amazing explosivity and serve, but when he wasn't serving well, he could be taken.
Before the big 3, Pete was the man! Wimbledon was his house. Pete and Andre are the reason why I wanted to play the game. Pistol is definitely one of the greatest to ever play the game!

I feel Sampras saw the tennis court in ways that most players don't.
He created shots at angels and in ways that not even todays players do.
I know there is a lot of hype around “the big 3” as they are recent/current, but I don’t want that to overshadow the greatness of Pete Sampras. My favorite player to watch of all time and (I feel) is truly the best player ever.

As people in ky family who watched all three and sampras alot on TV games, he played better and they are great but he was better and have not seen other player at this level.
Numbers are inflated due to number inflation ans the homogeneous courts and very few tournaments that they cam choose to play through the year.
Becker who si also Djokovic coach in great years of his 2013-2016 has said Sampras has case for goat because if elements of his game.
He wouldnt get a game of his broken in weeks .
Pistol was a monster in Grand Slam finals! Won 14 of his 18 finals. Almost 78%. Rafa is a distant second at 71%. Happy Birthday, champ!

See 1996 QF vs Corretja in the fifth set when he threw up on the court and uncorked a second serve ace at 7-7. His desire grew with the death of his coach so I would think twice before commenting without knowing the different eras carefully.

Pete was the GOAT of his generation and while I find it impossible to compare eras given a multitude of factors, I feel that on his day (and depending on every surface apart from clay), he could fair very well against the Big Three.

@@romuluscreative I agree, not only did I have a privileged wrist for the volleys in the net added to some feline reflexes, but also powerful blow of track background both drive and backhand, amazing legwork for Pete's height and a harmony throughout the body in the swing and execution of the blows that even today I have not seen another player so aesthetic, Pete was the ultimate tennis player. How much I wish Pete's time was in these times, watching him play in HD quality would be beautiful.

I started to watch tennis only because of Sampras, he made me to love watching tennis more than any other sports, and i was lucky to see many finals wins by him, really great moments, i was born in 80, best era of 80s-90s in my min.
I sign under your comment because it happened to me exactly the same, I knew that tennis existed but I never stopped to watch a game until by chance I put on the TV one day and Pete was playing, I fell in love with his way of playing and from there I always followed his career, he made me tennis, I was also born in the 80s :)
Pete had the greatest serve ever.
After Karlovic and Isner, who made both more total aces and more aces per match. Before you say "oh, Pete would play second serves as first serves", consider that he wasn't special for doing so. It was very typical of the 1990s. Mark Philippoussis also hit powerful second serves as if they were first serves.
@mm43501 the one most important statistic actually is "% of unreturned serves". But this one doesn't exist unfortunately.
Isner and Karlovic get benefits a lot because of their heights. Overall, i choose Federer, his serve so accurate and impossible to read if he's aimed perfectly. and his serve adaptive with different surfaces fast, medium, and slow

The best part about Pete's serve is it was so powerful and physically balanced it didn't destroy his readiness for the next shot. He was a much better athlete than other bigger servers, except maybe Roddick.

Like Edberg, so graceful so highly underrated foot speed... also underrated touch volleys... Athleticism is what set him apart... and from this u can tell his competitive spirit was second to none in his prime... this all supported his amazing serve and forehand
Pete is the master. He played to win a point with as few shots as possible. Nowadays players only play to not lose a point, with a point going on and on with endless rallies. Pete may not have the most championships but his games are the most awesome to watch.
He had the intelligence and vision for it where today's players are like high schoolers on steroids with predictable and talentless moves despite having high athleticism and hitting hard. The dumbing down of tennis is very sad.
He stopped to train at 28. This is main reason otheriwse he could get more slams.
But he was almost double the second and he didnt see the point.

The thing with modern tennis is bc players are so much faster and stronger these days they will get to more balls so points will naturally be a little longer anyway. Fed plays a similar style to Sampras but against Rafa, Novak, or even Murray he has to play longer points bc those guys are so good at returning it back.

50 that didn't occur in any of his 14 majors! Some great touch. Pete was incredible. As an Agassi fan I loathed him back in the day. But looking back he was awesome.

Huge huge fan! Pete always knew where the money was (tennis-wise). The match against Kuerten in Miami was also epic. My only regret is that he totally disappeared after US Open. I have always wondered how could he could have been as a coach or on the Senior Tour. Happy Birthday Champ!
He played the Legends event in 2007 at the Albert Hall in London and lost in the semi finals to Pioline. But he played well.
He wanted to leave the sport since 3 years before that.
He became bored and he didnt have obligation to continue playing since Agassi had 8 slams or fewer ones and he was the record holder.
Otherwise maybe he wpuld be interested.

His incredible one handed backhand was amazing and effective too. Today's players aren't smart enough, talented enough, or graceful enough to do it. It's like comparing oven cooked homemade pizza to microwave pizza with steroids and preservatives.

Sampras is a shot maker! It is interesting how he changed over the years and started working the crowd.
I think Pete was a shy guy, and it took him a while to get used to the idea that he could get the crowd to cheer for him.

Greatest overhead smasher ever, period. And that fearsome running forehand, you'd be always reluctant to hit to his open deuce court cos you'll be in heaps of trouble.
It's amazing that nobody before or after him, serves quite like he did where he finishes his stroke with his elbow high.
Even today his serve is studied in tennis schools, the most beautiful, powerful and effective service in the history of tennis.
Greatest serve of all time, by far. Pete on fast courts was just impossible to play against, literally impossible. He was the kind of guy who could get away with not giving everything in a return game, because he knew he would win his service game anyway. And ohh yea, don't even get me started on his disguise. AND TO TOP IT ALL, HIS RACQUET WAS LIKE 85 SQ INCHES. Imagine his serve with today's racquets. Happy birthday champ.

The young Sampras was the most gifted tennis player I ever saw. He didn't work that hard at it, was never the best conditioned and didn't last as long as he might've, but his athletic talent was otherworldly, Greek godlike. At his peak it's fair to say that every part of his game was the best in the world. That's never been true of anyone else. And some parts, like his serve and running forehand, were the best of all time imo with no one really close. He had more power than Lendl, was quicker than McEnroe and could out rally Agassi from the baseline. There was never anyone to match him athletically. Even the big three, as great as they all are, can't match his serve and volley or all court game. Prime Fed is probably the closest followed possibly by prime McEnroe. But I believe a young Sampras would have beaten anyone in history, with the possible exception of Nadal on red clay.
Best volleyer we have ever seen. Best serve? He’s up there. Pretty dangerous backhand too which is often overlooked.

Second to last clip of Pete's backhand up the line after being lobbed from almost behind his back was a thing of beauty.
Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer played very beautifully. Each of them has its own technique. It was interesting to watch them. Many young tennis players of today play equally boring. Hopefully Roger will play more on the tour.

I‘ve been a tennis fan since the late 1980s and my favourite player was Michael Stich.
But I was lucky to see Pete Sampras live in Stuttgart.
But although his opponent Gambill had to give up, you could see that Pete was one level above for example Krajicek that played before.
Federer, Nadal and Djokovic were absolute giants.
But in the 90s, there were so many players that could win a tournament.
Sampras, Agassi, Courrier, Ivanisevic, Becker, Stich, Edberg,Rafter, Krajicek, Kafelnikov, Bruguera...

Such talent and style that is really lacking in today’s game especially now that Federer is pretty much done. Yes, there are a lot of great and talented players but you just don’t see this anymore. Not only great playing but so much class that is lacking these days.
There would be no Federer the way we know him now without Sampras.

That is true to some extend. Pete was Federer's idol. You can see so much of Sampras's shot making in Federer. Probably Pete's demeanor rubbed off on Federer too. Good roll model and idol.

I remember asking my tennis coach "who's style" I should play like at 5'8, he said I think Pete Sampras was around that height look at how he played. I was 5 inches shorter than him, but I played like him and it helped get my team to a state championship in 2012. In his favor even compared to to 2012 Pete Sampras was short. Any person in the USA in high school, if you can go from base line to net, you will win. I was ranked in the top 100 in the USA. As most know though after I turned down a couple of D-1 offers I was done, and honestly if you are getting TOP d-1 offer after college ends so does your tennis career, the USTA picks kids out that end up playing nationally.

The eyes, hands, speed, anticipation, and accuracy. Awesome player to have had the opportunity to admire over the years of my tennis life. Always motivated me to be a serve and volleyer during college tennis.

Absolutely it fast courts he is for me better than big3, and they never played on fast courts anyway, since all grand slams were slow by late nineties.
Yeah, considering he retired at 32, whereas the big 3 today are all still playing well into their mid-late 30s (Federer now in his 40s), you have to imagine if Sampras had played with modern day sports medicine, he'd have played a lot longer and won a few more grand slams.
