My Dad met Jimi in 1969 at Madison Square Garden. He and his friend were watching Aretha Franklin do her set. My Dad heard a couple of people talking behind him and glanced back and sitting directly behind him was Jimi Hendrix and his manager was sitting behind my Dad’s friend. My Dad elbowed his friend and told him quietly, “Jimi Hendrix is sitting behind me!” My Dad’s friend quickly looked and My Dad heard Jimi’s manager say, “We should get out of here, people are starting to notice”. About that time, Jimi and his manager made a run for the isle. My Dad gave chase and Jimi finally stopped in the isle. My Dad said, “I just wanted to tell you that you’re a fantastic guitar player”. Jimi said thank you, shook his hand and smiled at my Dad, and said he was sorry but he had to go. About a year later Jimi passed away. Recalling that night, my Dad said he had the longest and thinnest fingers he ever saw. He said Jimi was genuinely very nice and gave off a very kind and likable vibe. Nothing arrogant or pretentious about him. No autograph and my Dad said the entire encounter lasted about 10-15 seconds. My Dad saw Jimi live 4x including Woodstock (he was about 20-30 feet from Hendrix, so close he could hear his fingers hitting the fingerboard on his guitar). RIP Jimi Hendrix
WE USED TO SEE JIMI ALL THE TIME MY GRANDMOTHER LIVED IN 129TH ST BET 5TH AND LENOX AVE. AND WE WOULD SEE HIM WALKING AROUND AND WE SAW HIM PLAY AT A BLOCK PARTY ON 136TH OR 137TH ST.ALSO WHEN WE WOULD GO PAST THE PALM CAFE ON 125TH ST 8TH & 7TH AVE. MY AUNT KNEW HIM AND SHE INTRODUCED MYSELF AND MY BROTHER TO HIM AND TOLD HIM THAT WE BOTH PLAYED GUITAR ,BASS AND DRUMS I REMEMBER HE WAS A REALLY NICE GUY.
Now that is true irony!!!!! Chris Squire has a very funny story about opening for Hendrix. Brian Auger has some good stories as well. I love listening to these real vignettes about Hendrix. Too bad that movie about Hendrix made him look like a sourpuss. I don't think he was at all from everything I have seen and read. Thanks for the post. It makes Hendrix come to life again!!!!
This is a reflection on Jimi never really being accepted by the black community which I think he did yearn for and explains a little bit about the sound he was experimenting with towards the end of his life adding more r and b flavor to his music and adding his old bass player buddy, Billy Cox to the band.

Jimi found his path
At 2:00 into this recording... Jimi Hendrix was the first or one of the first people to do a 'fist pump' instead of a handshake.
