I got into trouble in college because of a rain scene in a short I made because the tutor realised I hadn't signed out any rain protection for the cameras for the shoot. His face when I told him the rain wasn't real was priceless. He bought me a beer after college that day to apologise for going off on me lmao
I love VFX shots like this. The kinds that you wouldn't even consider to have much "touching up" (maybe aside from color grading) because they blend so well with the original footage. Killing it as always guys!
I looked for tutorials about making VFX rain for a few years already and never could find anything good. I experimented myself trying to come up with some realistic ideas but again didn't really work. Now this video is totally gold. Thank you!
One of my projects back in film school involved filming indoors with rain, blood, and fire all involved. I built a rain machine using 2x4s with a spiraled hose with holes in it and then someone would stand above it on a ladder and pour water from the school's water fountain in a funnel that would trickle into the hose and create rain over my actor who was covered in blood by a chair that was set on fire for real. My actor also got sunburn from the lights over the intense 3 day shoot. I spent 8 months on the project... I got a B+. Not even an A.
oh my god, i thought it was going to be a failry complex way of maybe using some cgi or effect but actually utilising already made footage but just making it transparent? honestly this is blowing my mind, it's easier and more simple than i ever would have come up with xd thank you so much!
Shooting a music video for an actress on Disney this weekend and she wants a very climactic end of the video rain scene but it won’t be raining this weekend. This just saved my life! I’ll definitely use some practical water mixed in with the digital. Looks extremely realistic, well done!
Great tutorial. I love how you break it up with the funny outtakes. That always helps with longer tute's, although, this was a short one. Thanks for the content.
This is an awesome breakdown. Specifically, the blending of the practical effects with the hose blending with the digital assets. Definitely something we should have thought about when we did our first short that involved rain lol. It definitely didn't look this good. As always, you guys are the best for helping filmmakers to achieve their goals at any budget/skill level!
Just watched the old wand episode...boy remember when "Ry" spoke super fast? Me too..also still waiting for you to jump over to Full Sail for advice from the pros ;)....Booya indeed
Watching you guys from year one, it was a love-"hate" relationship, cause you gave me more inspiration and love for this craft, as you put more fear in me for even attempting to enter this business.
the first thing I looked for and noticed was the lack of raindrops impact on her. It's also what the Avatar VFX team said is the hardest thing to do digitally. How raindrops interact with different materials and texture at different velocity and angles and the massive amount of it. I don't even wanna know how long it would take to render that.
A really funky (yet easy) work around that I used to create haze or a promist feel is using an adjustment layer with the blend mode set to screen and gaussian blur turned up to like 400 and then just lower the opacity to liking. Not the same as red giant but great say to add haze in premiere without the glow effect
@@evilpigskin Davinci has a build in effect named glow. Make a parallel node with the footage as is below and add the glow effect to the upper node. Set the mode to light source only and adjust the glow threshold and lower the overall gain if needed. Can't wish for more. ✌️
This is a great tutorial to see what can be done by someone familiar with all the tools. If I, as someone coordinating production of a film project, handed a scene to someone and asked them to "make it rain" (presuming this person knew what they were doing), how long should it take to put something like this in place? Is this an hour's effort? A day? Presume that the shot had been done with all the necessary components, and they only needed to do the digital work.
Josh is hilarious. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, you guys could really do great if you started your own mini series on here. Sci-fi / comedy adventures, I would tune in for every episode.
For the wide shot, I think that the only thing that is missing is having Emily actually being wet and having some interaction with the water. I think that having someone stand on a ladder and spraying her with water and having a clean plate to mask out the ladder and person spraying the water would have sold this effect.
I feel like Russell Crowe from a beautiful mind when he realizes he's seeing people who aren't really there when I see Emily. "She never gets old" also another great rain scene in a movie.
Ahh filmriot, I came back to your channel to look for teleportation tourettes, can't believe I wasn't subscribed for some reason. Love your videos, I remember watching you guys so much back in the day when 1080p was a pipe dream only very few channels had. I hope all of you are doing amazingly well :)

This is the best lie of the year
Wow🤔😂🤣🤣

This looks much better than I would have thought. You really put a lot of effort into the depth, scale and lighting.

Yes, as always killing
That was amazing how real you got that to look!
yes
Legitimately have a band wanting to do a rain scene in their next music video. This is gold.
I love the behind the scenes of Josh and Emily! Amazing results as usual!
Same, I just love seeing all of their interactions as a family
Brooo thankss, now i can finish my project

wow Amazing and Very Very Nice Video Superb 👍👍👌👌💯💯🙏🙏🙏🙏.....
This was incredible
Y’all’s skits need to be expanded upon into bigger stories, that opening was SO GOOD.
Randomly came across this awesome video and then randomly saw the Pal's 10 minutes from my house 3:32. What a small world!
I don't even like compositing and vfx, and this made me amazed.
This is solid gold. Not every movie can benefit from electricity bolts or gunfire, but rain...super versatile.

Bro I would of just died
I wanna watch it
I really wish you guys would have more fun during your shoots lol. Seriously though, I've always admired your family dynamic, it's pretty rad.
I love the skit! It's amazing how many horror movies forgo that kind of suspense, and just use cheap jumpscares instead. Well done!
You guys never fail to impress me with what you can do with effects
Geez, this is amazing. When I saw the shot I thought this was going to be more of a practical episode. You guys blew me away
The Emily and Josh shots are so cute on top of an already amazing tutorial :ooo
I asked Andrew at conference once if he could do a rain tutorial for VC. He said it was way to hard.. I'm stoked you tackled it!
I thought for sure the first time I saw the rain in the wide shot that it was practical. Genuinely amazing results! ✨
I remember subscribing after the original rain video back in the day. Time truly does fly!
Dude this looks so fucking real omg
The transition from all the rain to none at 10:29 just seems like normal Florida weather...
oh my god, i thought it was going to be a failry complex way of maybe using some cgi or effect but actually utilising already made footage but just making it transparent?
honestly this is blowing my mind, it's easier and more simple than i ever would have come up with xd
thank you so much!
This looks so good. The wind on the raincoat really helped with the wide shot as well as well
That rain alone was more realistic than my life
Cameraman never died, even though he was hit by a rainstorm for hours to shoot a scene, he never had a high fever...

I am huge on atmosphere. So this is amazing! Great job! Also love the chemistry between Josh and Emily. We need more of that going foward!
The "make it rain" song was playing in my head during the flashback
Amazing result! You are the best!
I'm from Brazil, I'm really enjoying the videos now that I'm studying video editing and VFX, thank you very much, teach us everything
LETS GOOOOO BABY NEW VIDEO always love to see a new one drop this one is super useful, keep up the good work!!
Frickin' love you guys, nothing but respect and admiration for you all, for your hard work, to teach us something so amazing. Thank you so much.
I could watch Emily and Josh interacting on set all day lolol. Yall gotta make a separate BTS channel with the craziness lol.
Unbelievable, great work. Can't believe how realistic this looks.

Josh's laughter made my day. Thanks for that Josh. From the bottom of my lump of coal.
Dang that looks real :o I still remember using ccRain or whatever the effect was back then and it wasn't great haha
the first thing I looked for and noticed was the lack of raindrops impact on her. It's also what the Avatar VFX team said is the hardest thing to do digitally. HOLY SH*T YOU BY FAR ARE THE MOST TALENTED WITH VFX I'VE SEEN ON UA-cam!
These Emily and Josh cutaways were the best lol. Very cool effect. Thanks for sharing!
I didn't know this was fake rain until you said it was. i think the wind help sell it

I use this for fog I think it works well :)
Now I gotta do this in DaVinci.

TNice tutorials is literally the best tutorial on UA-cam. It's right to the point, and very informative at the sa ti. Thank you so much
OMG this is so nice, looks like Hollywood movie 😍
funny that the only part that looked fake was the real water being sprayed onto the car.
Wow! Look at the amount of work needed for this awesome shot footage! 👏🏻 U guys are great!
