      Agree with you 100% on this. The only reason why the A's can't move to Vegas right now (besides not starting work on building a new stadium) is because the MLBPA would object big time to them using the LV Ballpark due to the summertime heat. Then there is the schedule conflict with the Aviators, though the Aviators can always play their games at either Cashman Field (especially since the Lights of USL are the only tenant & only play on weekends) or at UNLV's baseball stadium.

  • @VoteAdnanShahab
    @VoteAdnanShahab 8 місяців тому

    First of all, as Brodie pointed out, the terms of the existing A's contract at the Coliseum gives them the right to refuse the Ballers playing a game there. That alone should be sufficient to end talk about this issue. We live in a country of laws and contracts that help maintain order. Enforcement of explicit language of a contract is important. In order to not waste any sort of time and effort, the Ballers should have been informed about this at the very beginning of their negotiations to play at the Coliseum. If the Ballers wanted the A's to allow them to play there, they should have offered something of value to the A's as compensation, or they should have pushed for Oakland/Alameda County officials to give the A's something they want (e.g. favorable lease terms at the Coliseum in 2025-2027). If the Ballers were aware of the A's right of refusal and still pursued this anyway without any sort of significant compensation to the A's, then that is an indication that this was just a publicity stunt by the Ballers from the very beginning.
    Secondly, if Oakland officials were still hoping, in the event plans fell through in Las Vegas, that the A's would reconsider staying in Oakland, then this pretty much ends that discussion. Kaplan and Jenkins grandstanding in this way does nothing but demonstrate to the A's that there is significant bad blood remaining on the part of Oakland officials, and any sort of pathway to a future deal that would keep the A's in Oakland no longer exists.
    Third, I find it hilarious that Kaplan and Jenkins are pretending to be so interested in the revenue and jobs in Oakland that would be generated from a single Ballers game. If they actually cared about business and jobs, their positions and past voting records on a great many issues would have to be drastically different. You can't have a career based on virtue signaling and being "woke" and then all of a sudden claim that you actually care about business and creating jobs. If you look at their records, these council members have a pattern of making Oakland an unfriendly and unattractive place to do business.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 8 місяців тому

      Of course it was all for show. The Ballers knew as did Oakland. My take is that very few people will care about rule of law with MLB and the A's. It is just a show to make the A's look bad because they were petty and being a pismire if they don't let the made up team play. Yet they also know that the made up team will draw a lot of protesting fairweather fans. Damned if they do and damned if they don't.
      A's should have said yes, but only on the condition they get half the house take, not profits, half of all money taken in except the private leased concessions. If they took half the take of the concessions they wouldn't show up just to lose money and the A's would really look no different than denying the Ballers in the first place. More bad blood, but the A's should have made a counter-offer like we get half.
      You'll embarrass us, but we make a fortune. I mean it never bothered Fisher before!

      The Athletics and Ballers are both professional baseball teams. Even if one is a top level team and one is a very low level, they engage in similar activities. They are both competing for the same set of people (in this case, baseball fans in the Oakland area). If the A's have the right to say no to any other entity to use the facilities during a certain time frame, then they have that right. It was bargained for and approved by all sides in the lease. Doesn't have to be popular. Not everything is.
      JCPenny (major well known department store) is not going to allow Boscov's (Pennsylvania known, but much smaller department store) set up a mini store in their much larger store that they leased and bargained for as another example. Even if for one day... can't blame JCPenny...

      @@stefanbrown5872 The A's haven't vacated though. They still have a valid negotiated lease through the 2024 season. They intend to play baseball in Oakland at the Coliseum as their home for 2024. Unless the Ballers intend for this game at the Coliseum to be played until 2025, they do not have the absolute right to the Coliseum under the lease the A's have. The A's have the right to say no. Just like JCPenny would have the right to say no to Boscov's (or any other store) to go into their space until the bargained for lease is expired or mutually agreed to have ended.
      You are correct in that the A's have no right after they vacate the Coliseum. Unless they successfully negotiate to play in the Coliseum for 2025 (and beyond), once the terms are met, it's over. The Ballers (or the Oakland Men's Softball League or whoever else) can enter into a lease to use the Coliseum as they see fit if they want to.
