very nice document style. I formatting a Torah manuscript and cant figure out how to create a Reference to auto-update in my page header. i basically want the chapter nr and verse nr on each page like for example bereshit 5:20. any ideas

Hrm. I love the cleverness of the "hidden" chapter title variation. But honestly I think it'd be faster to just do the initial solution you showed: Go to each chapter and apply the character style to the text you want to appear in the running header. Because the second solution you showed, adding the "end nested style here" character, still requires individual editing of each title, yes? And if you wanted a section from the middle or the end of a chapter title, no need to create an alternate version that's then made "invisible," just apply the character style to those characters.

I guess it depends very much on the book. I find that most of my books I can just use the hidden character style and then often just truncating the title is enough. When it’s necessary to create a different version of the title, then I simply type the new title at the beginning of the chapter title, put an end nested character style in and then I have a little script that makes the initial text “invisible” by making it point size 0.1pt, width 1% and none.

I have a "Hide" character style for hiding text, no need for script. And with two searching queries it can be "turned” on or off.
Also, I have multiple character styles for running headers: Run 1, Run 2, Run 3. Respectively on master pages I put 3 variables. Usually 2 of them is enough to create a shortened running header. For convenience, by default, those char styles are highlighted with different colors.

Petru Strimbeanu I can’t use a cstyle for the invisible because I am using a cstyle for the runin so that the running header trick will work.

@ how you create TOC in this case? I'm not using hide method in headers, only cstyles.
