- Composer John Williams is one of America's most celebrated musical talents - the best-known creator of music for films. He has written the scores for such revered classics as "Jaws," "Star Wars," "Superman" and "Schindler's List," and is returning to the "Star Wars" universe with the upcoming "Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker." Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Williams, and with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, who collaborated with the composer on a new album of works for violin and orchestra adapted from his film scores, "Across the Stars."

The world is a better place because of John Williams.
Truer words have never been spoken
Movie music is more kitschy, that's for sure
Well said.
The world is a sad place since Jerry Goldsmith is gone he was much better than John Williams allways

Such a passionate person, yet not showing it directly. 🙏🏼
Am I the only person who thinks it is ridiculous that he :: ONLY :: has five Oscars?
Yes.
He got no Oscar for Star Wars 3 or 1.
LOL! I LITERALLY laughed a the PALTRY 5.....
Still don't get it why Phantom Menace wasn't even nominated. I know the judges scorn hollywood sci-fi action movies, but just ignore the film and listen to the isolated score. Basically consider it a brilliant 2-hour classical symphony.

"I know, but they're all dead."
Both an excellent joke and the highest compliment.
my thoughts exactly! I laughed for like 5 minutes when I heard this part! :)))
almost feels like Spielberg already knew what Williams would say and was ready for it.
Steven is another one of those few legendary men like John Williams. Extremely talented and smart, yet very pleasant, too. Add McCartney in there.
...they should work together.
And someone who's the master of them all in his field and yet, possess such sincere modesty and humiliation.
Dan humiliation or humility?
Star Wars wouldn’t nearly have the impact that it did without his score.
His scores are the heart and soul of all those films, SW Raiders Superman etc etc
100% agree but his scores for me improve every film he touches. For me he is up there with the all time best composers especially in film.
@@lukewebber97 I completely agree, Williams is unrivaled in film.
Honestly though, it would have been like the old Tron movie

To compare Zimmer, a man who can't even read sheet music, to geniuses like Williams, Mozart, Beethoven and Verdi, is utterly absurd.

John Williams has achieved immortality like a Jedi becoming one with the force. As his music will live on forever.
I don't think any human will feel blessed with true immortality. That said, a few hundred years or so of life would not be bad.
Whether flying through the stars, over a building, off to Neverland, towards a dinosaur island, or on a bike across the moon, no composer has captured the imagination of generations the way Williams has

No, I got goose bumps instead :)
@@johnp2426 Especially if you hear it with headphones and from the very beginning, when it starts out light and soft (when the kid is reading from the comic book) and then flies up toward the stars and the kettle drums and then...magic! Music like that has to come from the heart and soul, otherwise it loses it's essence if it is "taught" and just becomes a shallow imitation.
I am always thinking the same thing. Like, please sit down with some of todays composers and give them tips on how to write melodic scores. It's a dead art, only he can do it and a handful of others.
The thing is finding your art I guess
I really wish he take a break from relentless scoring and apprentice some students. Less when he eventually passes, the classic Hollywood soundtrack may die with him.

The Imperial March by Williams is perfectly chromatic. It's in Am but uses all 12 notes in the melody. You can't say which Greek mode it uses (aolian, Phrygian etc) because it's just something else entirely.. :)
This gave me whole new insights into this man. He considers himself to be inferior to master composers who have passed before him. In future decades, I think he'll stack up pretty well against them, just in terms of day to day play time.
When I listen to his music, I am speechless. When he speaks, I am speechless.
Mr. Williams is a true National Treasure and one of the greatest composers in the last one hundred years or so.
One of the most exciting nights of my life was seeing/hearing John Williams conduct an orchestra at The Hollywood Bowl last year. Talk about goosebumps while hearing the soundtrack to modern American movies. What a gifted man!

There are a few geniuses in this world and John Williams is definitely one of them.
I was obsessed with the score for "E.T." as a 14 year old. I still consider it his best work.
Yeah it captures something pure and innocent in the heart, it elevates the film probably more then any other movie, without it it could not have been a masterpiece I’d say
The E.T. score is a masterpiece. For me, I think his score for Hook was amazing, too.
Everything in it is just perfection. Something people don't get about musicians. I wrote one 7.5 minute piano piece technically in about 3 days, but I just kept listening to it for the next YEAR and making tweaks and changes here and there before I finally just told myself I needed to let it be. I'm still technically not satisfied with it. Hearing it reminds me of all that stress and all the things I would still change about it, it doesn't actually bring joy per se.
That was one of the most relatable things I've ever heard from someone of his status. Though I don't write music, I make videos/films for a living and I always find myself critiquing everything I do to the point where I don't even like it while most people will watch and tell me how good it was. I think that's just a curse of a creative.

John Williams is the most legendary soundtrack creator ever!
I had the pleasure of meeting him about 15 years ago, before a concert. After a quick rehearsal with the orchestra, he allowed anyone who wanted an autograph to come up on the stage. He took the time to chat with each person and sign their program. He’s a fantastic guy, and I wish him many more years of health and happiness - and maybe, one more Indiana Jones film worthy of his score...

I played my mother Beethoven's Missa Solenella, and she asked if it was John Williams. That means he has matched the greats. He is the person that really got me into classical music with Star Wars when I was 8, it's 20 years later and I still love his music...

My compositions are heavily influenced by Mr. Williams' works.
The amazing Lucas, Spielberg and others' films that not only entertained, but also changed hearts and minds, bonded families, and created lifelong friends would not be as prominent as they are without the incredible film scores written by John Williams.
John Williams will no doubt be placed in history along side Mozart, Beethoven, Gustav Holst, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Gershwin, Handel and others as one of the greatest composers in history.
His humility is admirable, but misplaced. He IS a legend indeed.
what about Hans Zimmer ?
John Williams, classic movie and song composer of all time. He's a blessing to many of the films we always watch: JAWS, E.T. Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Home Alone, Harry Potter, Schindler's List, and the rest continues.
It hurts that there are empty seats in that audience... I want that seat!
What a missed opportunity on the part of CBS/interviewer! I've seen these same fluff questions answered by him so many times. The Schindler's List one on all the other composers being dead is famous. You get the chance to interview a brilliant mind who has been so significant to why people love the movies and why film music is a popular artform... why don't you actually go for a take that is more refreshing and interesting? What inspires him to create? How is the process of scoring still interesting for him? What is his actual process -- writing the music, orchestrating (which he relies on help for), spotting sessions? Where does he see film music today, as the classical orchestral score is not as commonplace? What was the impact of losing his first wife at a young age? That was laid right out on the table and was totally ignored.
Those are all GREAT questions. Damn.
These are great questions, but maybe not suitable for such a short clip which is really meant only to honor him. I'm sure he has answered these questions in other settings.
fahrenheit290 American TV interviewers are so superficial, they don’t ask the long hard questions. For the good interviewers go to European TV interviewers.
"What was the impact of losing his first wife at a young age?" - As far as I know, he dedicated his violin concerto to her. If you delve into this great work (one of his best), you may find some kind of answer to the question.
