Southwestern Railways are also taking some of these for the London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbor service as they want more trains per hour. A total referb is now under way.
A new operator called Grand Southern will most likely use these trains to form a new service on the London to Southampton (swml) line. It's not been given the go ahead just yet, but the capacity is there and local People and MP's are backing it. Blooming exciting times!
The Class 442s have been permanently withdrawn by South Western Railway since March 2021 and will be replaced by refurbished Class 458s for the Portsmouth Direct Line and the SWR 442 sets were withdrawn from service in March 2020 at the start of COVID-19 Pandemic and also the SWR 442 sets had a lot of technical problems and also have future problems complying with accessibility regulations from 2024
👍Oh they're so classy and lovely. If i was incharge of them I would get the depots to make as many of them as possible and have them running in Kent, Surrey, Sussex, South West London and Central London for as long as possible. They're the best or one of the best trains in England ever especially when they were the Gatwick Express⭐.
They've been part of the scene on the Gatwick Express run for a number of years, but they still look in good condition. Hopefully they will be sold on / rebranded rather than scrapped?
I used to like travelling on the 442 it’s better than what we have now running I don’t know why they took them off doesn’t make sense look how long hst been in service before they took them off they should bring back the 442 it was a nice train
Apparently alliance rail is to use the 442's on the London to Southampton route offering 300 seats. is this true or will this no longer be happening? we can't just let these trains sit here and end up heading off to the scrapyard of doom. they are far too young!
Crap quality but I must say its strange as I thought they were scrapped I heard rumours of themcbejng used on the new South West Trains Ckpany whatever it's called but that's so strange seeing all in one depot being stored and not used it would make great service and frequent trains to Gatwick especially in the summer where everyone goes on holiday.
Will be nice to see these being re-used again although First, that has won the franchise from Stagecoach South West Trains decided they would prefer to use these in place of the brand new class 707s SWT ordered which probably means brand new units being put into storage! Never forget their slogan... First transforming travel.! They have destroyed our buses. destroyed our HST's.. More like First destroying travel😑
chris217 Don't they still have the HSTs? Also the 442s were amazing, remember the good old days when they ran with the slam doors on South West Trains, or soon to be South West Rail (I hate that new name)

@Chiltern Transport Productions now they’re not :(
Thank you for subscribing to me, much appreciated.
I thought the plan was to use these units once refurbished on the Portsmouth to Waterloo route
How can you get that close to them as I was trying to get as close as you were to the hsts abs I got chased off my security

saw some being towed by a class 47, down south through Basingstoke last Friday 6.1
London to Portsmouth, not the main SWML.
@Chiltern Transport Productions The Portsmouth Direct Line, mainly, although if stock is sorry of the 444s, the 442s will be used for that (I believe)
@Chiltern Transport Productions I never said they wouldn't be used on the SWML, I explicitly said that they would.
Hopefully one will go into preservation in some form
I believe 2401 as the speed record holder is destined for the national collection. That said they may well only preserve the DSO.

Aaaawww what a shame I loved the old Wessex class ☹️

why couldnt they use these on viva rail instead of 1978 ex london tube stock!
Vivarail is meant for branch lines and these wouldn't make very good local branch line stopping trains
How are they a Ex-southern 😂😂😂😂😂
Doesn't make any sense and we are using pacers in the North some 30 years old 😡
In the Isle of Wight, we have 80 year old trains.
