  • Ever since I saw photos of the magical Cappadocian landscape topped with a sky filled with balloons, a trip to visit was planted firmly at the top of my bucket list.
The Cappadocia region of Turkey is the most popular location in the world for hot air ballooning. Last year, over half of the world’s balloon trips took place in the region, with almost half a million people taking to the skies.
It’s also one of the few places in the world you can balloon almost all year round. Trips run in boiling hot summers and snowy winters - and the landscape looks incredible in both.
On the day, we were collected by minibus at 5.30am from our hotel and taken to the balloon company’s office in Göreme where we tucked into a light breakfast of coffee and pastries. We waiting nervously for a decision by the Civil Aviation Authority on whether it would be safe to fly. Around 6.20am, the green flag was given and we set off to the balloon take-off zone!
The whole area was filled with deflated balloons lying on their sides. The balloon staff were busy setting them up, checking them for safety and starting to inflate them. It was quite a sight to see them up close.

From the highest points, the panoramic views of the region were completely mind-blowing, while from the lowest points you could almost pick fruit from the trees! There was more to it than just the weird and wonderful landscape, the view of the other balloons in the sky made made it a completely magical experience. It didn’t look real!
Once back on dry land, we were rewarded with a champagne toast and a certificate.
I visited Cappadocia this year in the month of May and got to experience something which is just not easy to describe in words. I never thought i would get such an overwhelming feeling by looking at a place which has such rugged landscapes. Like the title states, it really looks like you have stepped out of the lunar lander. It has absolutely no resemblance to any other place on this planet and once there you feel like you just don't want to go back. Before visiting Cappadocia we had a brief idea of what to expect, but the magnitude of its beauty only becomes clear once you see it with your own eyes. No amount of words or pictures can do justice to the overwhelming feeling of being there in person.
Cappadocia was the second city i visited on my trip to Turkey. The best way to reach there from Istanbul is to fly to either Kayseri or Nevsehir and the tickets are also pretty affordable. We had hired a self drive car with pickup from the airport so travelling and exploring the places becomes a cakewalk. The roads from Kayseri to Cappadocia are in amazing shape as are in all of Turkey and the views on the way are well spectacular to say the least. The landscape changes very quickly from plains to hills and then to the so called Lunar landscape.
This place actually gives you a chance to live in caves carved out from the soft stone. These are the famous so called fairy chimneys which rise from thr ground and since ages people of this region have dug out cave rooms in them for themselves. Most of these have been converted into cave hotels in the present day. After a lot of research and comparing the prices of these hotels we chose the EMPIRE CAVE HOTEL in GOREME.
The view you get from this place makes you want to sit there for hours doing nothing and just staring into what beauty god has created in this place.
In upcoming videos I will be sharing my experience of Antalya.
