The Pivetta thing only works if he signs elsewhere. Big risk to take to make sure you pick up a draft pick to compensate when you sign another player with a QO attached. Another topic: I saw a report that the Sox are going to offer a one year contract to Chris Martin. Did that happen?
There are almost two weeks until they decide, pitching is a hot commodity, you can never have enough starters. The first threshold is 241 million, and generally they like about 10 million plus breathing room. We have no idea if they will bid on players with a QO attachment, a reporter needs to ask that, and let Breslow know its a yes or no answer and not a long elaborated answer.
Nicky P is projected for 2.5 fwar, very reasonable price to pay for that. He's the 7th best pitcher in free agency, we're not going to get all of the guys projected to be better than he is.
I am ok with them giving Privetta a QO. I really doubt the Red Sox will go after a picture with a QO. unless, Privetta declines and they get a neutral pick. Hs iz not fop of a rotation starter but overall the Red Sox rotation was good. Next year should be better. Remember they are also adding GIolito. They should improve because they are still young. Bello, Houke, and Crawford ran out of gas last year. They should be stronger. In 2025, they also have something they did not have in 2024. Pitching depth in AAA with Fitts and Priestler waiting in the wings. They also have Luis Perales and Wikelman Gonzalez on the 40 man roster. Last Year, they' were down 4/5 of their original starting rotation at one point. Houke was the only original healthy starter at one point. They survived. Having Privetta for one more year, gives the Red Sox time. They will have an internet replacement by the time he leaves next year, if he accepts theoffer. Also look for the Sox to sign Shane Bieber (Your August Rotation addition). You also have David Sandlin in AA who the Red Sox are very high on. And Juan Valera at Salem, watch him he could be a breakout pitcher this year and could end the year in AAA. Plus you had all those college pitchers you took in last years draft. Any one of them could move up the ranks quickly. I think the Red Sox are going to be more conservative in their moves. They also offered Chris Martin 13 million for one year. I also could see several trades like the Alex Vedugo deal.
The only way this makes sense is if they asked him before the offer if he would take it and were 100% told he will not come back under any circumstances. This way you get the pick(s). If not and I am Pivetta's agent I tell him, take the 1 year play it out and then next year go to FA unrestricted. No team will even come close to giving him that money total so take it and play it out. As for the Sox, Corbin you hit it on the head. This move tells me they are playing it safe and will not invest again in the team this year and will stick to the plan of 2026. This is all about PR for now, if he turns this down, the Sox can say hey we knew that he would do that and we now get extra picks, if he takes it they can say, see we will invest in the team and pay out good size contracts for good players. They will throw all sorts of stats your way showing how good he is compared to what is out there. Until otherwise proven, the Sox are still a joke of an organization still trying to convince everyone they will be contenders all while cutting costs and earning money for Henry and FSG
Years ago the sox made a qualifying off to a player that they didn't think would take it and he did. Trying to member. It was an infielder, I think they picked him up for a playoff run but didn't really need him next season. Man I can't remember his name or the year ....this is going to dive me crazy
The only possible explanation I can think of is that they think they will sign a big starter by the 19th, and they know that Pivetta doesn't like the bullpen
Don't worry, Corbin, the objective is to pick up a draft pick. Pavetta is going to opt for free agency. I'm sure he wants a mult year deal. Whoever is interested will have to offer more than $21 million. That's not a lot inn today's market. I'm pleased to hear Rufschnider is signing for another year.
$21 million is the 19th highest contract for a pitcher in the mlb rn. Luis Castillo is making $21.6 million a year. Nola and wheeler are making like $24 million. There’s zero shot any team is giving pivetta a contract that exceeds $21 million a year, especially since there’s draft pick compensation attached to him now. This is one of the stupidest decisions I’ve ever seen a team make and it’s obvious we are in for another season of the front office telling us they’re gonna spend only to do nothing. I ducking hate this ownership with a passion
Thats because they are bringing in Teoscar Hernandez for Outfield. Pivetta may turn down the 1 year , 21 mill in hopes to get a 2 o 3 year deal. Great move Red Sox
Either the Red Sox are continuing at a snail's pace, and don't want an ace, or they are preparing to trade some present starters. I don't know. Either way, I would rather we use Fitts or Priester, than pay 21 MM for Pivetta.
Rob .940 ops vs lefties enough said…the Pivetta thing is absolutely disturbing..21 million dollars? For Pivetta ? It has to be they don’t think he will take it….if he takes it this is absolutely freaking horrible and stupid and a very bad sign for this off season. Paying Pivetta 21 million in any scenario is absolutely insane!…he has a 4 year 60 million dollar predicted value on sportstrac which is insane as well
I heard that the RED SOX might trade for Nolan Arenado 3yrs. left on his contract and before this year he won a Gold glove 10yrs. in a row and move Devers to 1st. Arenado is due for a bounce back year.
I'm going to throw a wrinkle into this...News is Shane Bieber may not be ready until June....Could they possibly be bringing back Pivetta to hold the fort at the spot in the rotation until Bieber is ready if Breslow is looking at Bieber?? Deep thought,I know but hey.
Pivetta move is like hording hand sanitizer at the beginning of covid. Almost every team needs pitching. Go after Ketel Marte. Make a 5,7,9 player deal. They have 1 player in the top 100 prospects. You could trade Grissom, Valdez, Hamilton, some pitching, prospects. You could possibly trade Story and/or Yoshida and take back Montgomery.
Pivetta has some very good underlying numbers. xFIP the past two years he's been around 3.5, which is top 20 in baseball. Granted, he's always underperformed that metric so grain of salt. His K%-BB% is even better and would have been 9th in baseball if he qualified. The HRs are a big problem, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a solid year for him in '25 and pitching is expensive!
I would have preferred Anthony and/or Campbell over Refsnyder and O'Neill (cheaper too!). Though Pivetta is not terrible, (Only strikeout/power pitcher on the team) but I'm surprised they gave him a qualifying offer.
The missing part of this is O'Neill - are they not making an offer to him because they have a better option coming? Who? Or do they just have immense faith in Casas?
Dumb, reaching, comment coming from me but could this be a foreshadow that the Sox will be willing to spend a little more this offseason? Maybe Pivetta is a card in a bigger hand and FSG told Breslow, do what you gotta do even though he isn’t worth 20+ mil. I can’t make sense of it either though
Bruh don't even mention trading Campbell lol, as far as I'm concerned he could be a Mookie Betts caliber player. No bueno, not worth giving up that potential for a starter, or anything really. Mayer too, just not worth it at this point.
I think the off season will be conservative and you will not see whole sale changes. I think they will get a good defensive catcher. That will help the staff greatly.
This is a really bad move from the Red Sox. The top brass has not earned any credibility from this move, but like you said. It could well be a genius move. I have a bad feeling about this.
I trust Breslow knows what he's doing. Even if Pivetta accepts, his WHIP the last two years is 1.12. K rate around 11 per 9. How many SPs can top that? Not many. Clearly other teams like TB, like him. Wouldn't be shocked if he's on the verge of a career year. One thing I've noticed about fans: they always think players on other teams are better than the ones in house. That isn't always the case.
i wasnt a big fan of the pivetta news either bc the dude was literally MID all season like too damn inconsistent. if i had to guess maybe they didnt wanna give the QO to oneill bc they thought it was too disrespectful to him. i remember this same scenario happening with eovaldi but whos knows
This is a head scratcher. 12 out of 13 names on that list are no brainers……….this one doesn’t make much sense unless there’s more to it. Red Sox have resources to improve the club in the form of money available under the luxury tax and assets that are available to trade. Every move needs to be evaluated based on whether or not it makes the team better. This doesn’t seem to make the club better unless there’s another shoe to drop that makes retaining Pivetta more important than it appears.
REFSNYDER makes sense. Totally understand and it's a good move. I don't understand Pivetta he just was not that good and no where near worth 21 million that's crazy. Does make you wonder about offseason
If kutter crawford is traded in a package for someone big (Rooker?) I'm cool with this. Otherwise Breslow is on a trajectory to be worse than Chaim Bloom.
Refsnyder definitely not a surprise Pivetta really doesn't make sense. MLB Network floated an idea they could trade a starter like Houck or Crawford or maybe they will keep the same pitching staff. This makes no sense. Breslow is going to have to explain this one. I'm likely going to stop giving Breslow the benefit of the doubt. There's got to be some reason for this your explanation does make some sense.
They must Think He Will Decline Or They Could Trade Him Instead Of Losing Him For Nothing Being Proactive. Otherwise Breslow Needs A Brain Scan At Mass General
A Qualifying Offer to Pivetta is hardly "shocking". He will decline and when he signs as a FA elsewhere the Sox will receive draft compensation. Simple story.
They are fishing for a draft pick with that choice of giving Nick this offer. Maybe they are going to sign him to a longer term.Thank goodness they kept Rob.
For what it’s worth, Frankie Montas declined his 20M mutual option earlier today and he was even worse than Pivetta last year. I think that’s some indication of how hot the market will be for starting pitchers. I still don’t love the gamble on pivetta but the Sox might be able to make out with a comp pick here. 🤞

A lot of money for a number 5 starter... I hope he doesn't accept.
Same
The only way this makes sense is if they asked him before the offer if he would take it and were 100% told he will not come back under any circumstances.
Mike Napoli?
Stephen Drew?
Nope and nope
Tony Grafanino or Mark Loretta? Maybe ?
I got it ( i think) Nick Punto I remember they got rid of him in the Beckett purge.
And maybe he let the Sox know this on the QT...😅
Paying Pivetta 21 million in any scenario is absolutely insane!…he has a 4 year 60 million dollar predicted value on sportstrac which is insane as well
The Tampa Bay Red Sox WTF😢😢😢
21 million for a dude isn’t exactly the rays MO
Refsnyder coming back does not mean that Anthony and Campbell won’t be up
Going to be just like last year
The missing part of this is O'Neill - are they not making an offer to him because they have a better option coming? Who? Or do they just have immense faith in Casas?
What a huge mistake , same old same old
Is there any chance the Sox think he can be a shut down guy for 7th 8th or closer stuff even so seems like way to much coin or maybe sign and trade
It's gotta be that they're planning a trade for Crawford or Houck. I genuinely do believe we actually will be more aggressive than last year.
Being aggressive can also be bad. This move is aggressive
It's simple they aren't going after any other pitcher.
That's my thought as well, hope I'm wrong
@@MrBacchus18 I hope so too.
Pavetta is an asset as draft pick or trade piece or if they trade one of the starters.
It is in this case
Extremely disappointed with this pivetta offer. Doesn’t make sense. No way he declines that. Love ref
i wasnt a big fan of the pivetta news either bc the dude was literally MID all season like too damn inconsistent. if i had to guess maybe they didnt wanna give the QO to oneill bc they thought it was too disrespectful to him. i remember this same scenario happening with eovaldi but whos knows
Totally makes you wonder. There has to be a lot more to this than meets the eye. Simply has to be.
If kutter crawford is traded in a package for someone big (Rooker?) I'm cool with this. Otherwise Breslow is on a trajectory to be worse than Chaim Bloom.
I like Nick ,, i think he has a few really good years ahead. He is a late bloomer
That’s great. If the Red Sox like him too they could have signed him to a contract that’s much less than $21 million a year
I don’t love keeping pivetta but I also don’t hate it. But when you add 21 million to that it begins to make less sense for sure
There is no common sense with guy’s at the front office. It’s insane that they are willing to pay a fourth or fifth starter that much money.
I just don't think Henry is going to let us spend much money.
Yeah I just simply would not understand the idea of just running back the same rotation. It was fine but there are some clear needs and obvious fixes.
I like cutter crawford
They must Think He Will Decline Or They Could Trade Him Instead Of Losing Him For Nothing Being Proactive. Otherwise Breslow Needs A Brain Scan At Mass General
Pivetta made 27 starts...healthy arm...
Nick Pivetta better than Flatery.
They could but what happens if they come up empty?
@@redseatradio They have a 21 million dollar pitcher that is streaky as all get out. Hopefully he finds a new home
Full throttle 2
Very disappointed they offered Pivetta ?
I rather sign Manea he is good pitcher than Pivetta.
I love Rob being back. As for nick, no thanks. It's time to turn the page. He ain't worth $21 million.
So that’s the Master Plan.
Noooooo !
god i hope not
Pivetta is not worth 21 million
They are trying to work a draft pick for themselves. I think they realize Pivetta will probably get a 3 or 4 year deal somewhere. Just a guess.
Yeah I think that was a lot of their reasoning to be honest with you
Also a lot of other pitchers in the same tier as Privetta got QO.
