    • @ashesman1

      @@ashesman1 I own two, but I do not live in NZ, and can't tell if they were ever meant for the NZ market ... have no idea ... what brand of slipper clutch do you have on your KTM build ?

    • @ashesman1
      @ashesman1  3 роки тому

      @@doncarlo5 Just the OEM clutch. I was worried it would be a nuisance and always lock up the back wheel on downshifts but only does if you really hammer it down into second. Even then its never a bother. Nowhere near as bad as my 390 Duke, that has a slipper and always locks the back under downshift!

    • @doncarlo5
      @doncarlo5 3 роки тому

      @@ashesman1 I have ridden SuMo bikes, with (KTM 450 factory SuMo) and without slipper clutch, (average dirt bikes converted to SuMo), and there is a huge difference, especially riding on track, where you normally have to shift down 2 gears at a time... I was not aware of a slipper clutch on a 390 duke, unheard before! All I know is that the 390 Dukes for the European market are built in India!
      The good news are: there is a ton of aftermarket slipper clutches for the KTM 450, (like the swiss Suter, or Adler), but I'm not so sure about the 500. I know riders who can play with the clutch lever, instead of using a slipper clutch, but SC rules on the race track (pro, semi-pro, and amateur)...
      It's way better ! At least in my modest opinion!

    • @ashesman1
      @ashesman1  3 роки тому

      @@doncarlo5 This bike is my work hack. I ride it around the hills to work most days. I may take it out to the track one day but not planning on racing. I do a bit of enduro/ hard enduro racing on my Husyk and some trials, that is more my style!
      You got me thinking though. So today on the way home I gave it a pretty hard time on down shifting. Like 100 kph full hard braking into a 2nd gear tight downhill corner. Only if I really snatch the clutch out on the second gear or brake hard enough to pick up the back wheel does it even think about locking the back. I noticed that normally I am just controlling it with the clutch subconsciously. If I feel it letting go I just slip the clutch a little. As it is a road bike, I didn't really put any effort into performance modifications. I also wanted to have it so I could switch it back to dirt bike spec should the need arise, but dont think I could handle the stone chips! Only future mods in mind are maybe a steeering damper (gets pretty shaky over 130kph!) and something to damper the handle bar vibrations.
      Yeah, all the KTM road bikes are made in India. My one claims to have a slipper clutch according to the specs but you wouldn't think so to ride it.

    • @ashesman1
      @ashesman1  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for your kind comments. To be honest I hate the mirrors too. I had intended on changing them but as the bike is used a lot in the busy city I like to have big clear mirrors. The drivers in New Zealand are completely ignorant towards cyclists and motorcycles so safety is everything. The mirrors you mentioned look pretty good though, I may look into them further.

    • @TheMocard
      @TheMocard 4 роки тому

      @@ashesman1 I understand and completely appreciate the comment about the safety side of the stock mirrors. My mirrors are not as clear as the stockers for sure. • @ashesman1
      @ashesman1  2 роки тому

      I didnt paint any parts. All were powder coated or anodised. But you could paint it I guess. It is easy to remove. If you powder coat you will need to remove the bearings and seals and fit new seals on reassembly. Powder coat was not much more expensive than paint and is much tougher. Make sure they mask anywhere that has bearings or axle bolted to it.

      The valves are from aliexpress. There are many options you can choose for style and colour. The rim tape is a 3M tape. I do not remember the exact part number but if you search forums you will find it. Its building flashing tape. Works perfectly. Nearly two years and no leaks. Make sure to cut the tape narrow to fit down into the low part of the front rim. What I did in the video did not work as got damaged by fitting the tire and had to be done again with narrower tape. After that it worked perfectly.

    • @ashesman1
      @ashesman1  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your feedback. "These people" do this for the love of the project. Also, this was a brand new bike, you cannot buy a new one like it. The total build cost not much more than the new price of the bike due to some deals I got. A DRZ400 SM is a nice bike but just doesnt have the power to weight of a ktm. I throw some oil at it every 20 hours. It probably doesn't even need that, the oil comes out like new each time. @@domenjeram9180 I wont touch the top end on it for some time yet. I have heard of guys running them for upwards of 250 hours before even looking at the top end. I will check the valve clearances at 100 hours but I doubt they will need any adjustment. The 500 is a pretty solid engine. Low revving most of the time. I have only done about 85 hours on this bike since new. I do the piston on my two stroke enduro bikes every 150 hours and it always comes out looking like new so expect more from a four stroke and a low revving one at that.

    How did you adjust the suspension for a road use ? I think the standard MX suspension is way too soft and rake angle is different now as the front wheel is smaller. Thank you

    • @ashesman1
      @ashesman1  2 роки тому

      I use heavier oil in the forks. Also set suspension to the "sport" adjustment settings so is a bit firmer. I am not very heavy so the springs are on the edge of too stiff for me. The reduced head angle is a benefit as do not need that much take on the road although it is not actually noticeable. I find the suspension very firm. Actually I wouldnt want it any firmer, especially in the back. The front does dive a bit under really hard braking but to be expected for a long travel fork. Besides it helps to pick up the back wheel.

    • @boru-cnc
      @boru-cnc 2 роки тому

      @@ashesman1 that’s what I found in mine the fork compression was ok but there was not enough rebound for a road. I think now about different offset triple clamps as it might improve the bike stability on higher speeds. Nice bike 👍

    ohhh, man I just bought some of those water flow LEDS for my bike and they didn't work! They worked fine on my car battery but on my 300 they dont work. They battery isnt on the bike no more and I just kick it over.. The stock front lights and rear LEDS work fine. I could only assume the lights were bad

    • @ashesman1
      @ashesman1  4 роки тому

      To use those LED lights I had to remove the factory indicator flasher. Then I had to add diodes on the dash indicator lamp as due to the low current the LED lights draw, there was back feeding through that lamp. To test, remove the flasher and jump a wire across where it plugs in. If both left and right turn on at the same time, then unplug the dash lamp to see if they are back feeding. If they work on a car battery, then they are all good and you will be able to get them working on the bike. At 12:50 in the video I am doing the indicator wiring for the dash lamp. I made a up a piece of wire with two spade terminals to plug in place of the factory flasher unit.

    • @ashesman1

      @@brendon8702 The lights have built in flashing so you dont need to use a flasher at all. Just like when you power them from a car battery and they flash by themselves. Test them again on the car battery, if they are still good then should be able to get them working on the bike easy enough.

    P. S. Given the choice would you start with a KTM or a Husky?

    • @ashesman1
      @ashesman1  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your kind words. I actually have a TE300 as well. Personally I don't like the look of the plastics on the personally don't like the look of the Husky plastics, but that is a personal thing. Six days KTM is same spec as a Husky. Probably the best thing about KTM is that there are so many parts avaialable. Most parts fit both, just not plastics, especially around the back end. Husky has a plastic sub frame, KTM still has aluminum so quite different. The non six days models dont have some of the nice features like better forks, billet triple clamps, map switch, bash plate etc.
      People have criticised me for not starting with a Husky, but this was the only bike I could get at the time and the price was right. Even then, I would have gone six days KTM given the option. I wanted a KTM 500, but I don't want orange. So I made it not orange. It probably is not obvious in the pictures but the frame and swing arm are powder coated in a textured finish which is quite nice.
      Hit me up if you have any questions... Cheers. Ashley.

      @stufish73 3 роки тому +1

      @@ashesman1 thanks for the reply. I have to agree with you on the Husky plastics. I like that they are well specced machines but there is just something about a KTM and something better still about a six days. I did wonder myself how you could strip away all that lovely six days paint scheme but the end result more than justifies it. The powder coating looked amazing, you have the bike that you want with the cooler scheme that you want and you did it all yourself. Nothing more needs to be said 👌.
