Mine showed up yesterday. One thing I found right off the hop is that the barrel jack is proud of the chassis about 1-2mm and there has already been arcing from the DC barrel plug to the chassis when I moved the switch. Does NOT bode well. Opened a case with UI Support this AM. Maybe ElectroBoom will like one of these.

I have to say, this is a VERY good intro into their Support and RMA departments and a breath of fresh air. That said, I've never had to exercise Support or RMA in the 10+ years I've been buying Ubiquiti gear for my home and home lab.
External bricks are more reliable, safe to replace, run cooler than internal ones, and don't require massive disruption to replace if they die. When the brick is integrated into the rack mount like this one, it's perfect. For a desktop or wall mount though, the brick sucks big time - there are many negatives - the size, but most of all the difficulty of cable management.

Agreed with other comments about the ridiculous power supply arrangement. They made the chassis smaller then had to invent that contraption to make it the correct width again to hold the power brick. Just make the chassis the proper 1U width to integrate the PSU! Also the Pro Max series should really have all 2.5 Gbps ports as standard. Finding 1 Gbps ports on a brand new device in 2024 marketed as "Pro Max" doesn't sit right.
In the UniFi Store, they have the Pro Max 16 PoE listed as $399 (rather than $479) and as you listed the Pro Max 16 Non-PoE for $279. Good to see they lowered the price on the Pro Max 16 PoE switch. That’s a decent price.

Great video, I have the old 16 port USW with POE but it's full width and goes into my comms cupboard sideways so I will definitely be buying this to replace that. Not that there is anything wrong with it except the POE+ isn't enough to drive the Flex that my U6-LR is connected to. Thanks for the vid.

The question then becomes why one needs the full 2.5 Gbps, and if it needs 25 Gbps uplinks. Unless one only has one switch, going past 4 2.5Gbps ports and the 1Gbps ports maxes out both 10 Gbps links. That's fine for residential, but probably not good for anything other than a small business.
I'm building a house and looking into this switch. Like others have said, I really wish this had more 2.5G ports. I'll have several devices that will be in need of a 2.5G port like my desktop, NAS, and 2 AP. Would have made sense to just split it down the middle. That would have been perfect IMO.
Looks great, just about perfect for my needs. Power supply will be easy to replace in the 1u configuration if it fails. Now hoping they release 16 and 8 port 10g switches
finally something with 2.5gbps, poe++ and sfp+ in "ok ish" pricerange! really wish psu would be included and normal 1U form factor, but still very nice!
Looks like you can flip the wall mounting ears the other direction to make them hide behind the switch? Makes the wall footprint a bit smaller, cool switch!
Nice, but I don't get the purpose of an external PSU. I would rather prefer full width oder a bit deeper. Anyways: what I really need is a medium sized 10Gbit Switch (RJ45+SFP)
For your 10gig setup, what are you using for your SFP+ 10g backbone? I was thinking of getting a Unifi Aggregation but wasn't sure if that would do what I needed to connect my TrueNAS Server and my minisforum MS-01 devices. What do you recommend for a homelabber? I already have ubiquiti hardware, so I was thinking of using the USW-Aggregation device. Is this the route you would go?
Sounds like a perfect application for the Aggregation switch. Although, if only expect to ever have two 10Gb devices, you could just skip the switch and directly attach them.
Would much rather the PSU on chassis, whether rack or wall mount. I was very close to pulling the trigger on this - I could probably get over the brick but the lack of 2.5 ports is very disappointing.
It might have made more sense to split the PoE++ ports between the 2.5Gb and 1Gb ports as PoE++ devices like the Access controllers wouldn’t need 2.5Gb and therefore would be wasting one of the few 2.5Gb ports on the switch. Other than that it seems like a great product!
This is the one I want for my own home network ... $399US (current price on UI Store) is AUD$602 ... but I bet the bloody thing is closer to $1000 by the time I get my hands on it ...
As soon as I saw this only had 4 x 2.5G I knew lots of people would complain and sure enough. People need to understand that 2.5/5G 802.3bz was never intended to replace 1G to the desktop or NAS. There's 10G for that. It was created for a niche. That niche was for powering and supporting WAP's that could saturate a 1G link while still using the existing CAT5e or CAT6 cabling in a buildings ceiling. The 10G standard doesn't include PoE either, a new standard was required to meet all needs of high speed WAP's. So this switch is intended to support 4 x UniFi U6-Enterprise or U7 Pro WAP's. The network vendors don't want to sell you a 16 port 2.5G switch because they want to sell you a 16 x 10G switch.
It was designed to deliver higher speeds over Cat 5e over a longer distance that 10Gb could go over Cat 5e. Use in high speed wireless access points was the particular use case behind it, but that’s no reason to limit 2.5GB to that use only. Every new standard starts as a niche. Using that logic the vast majority of PCs could still be 100Mb. But faster networks gets data to its destination and that means off the network faster. That reduces network congestion where it’s an issue. As a standard, it’s been around since 2016. It’s time for it to take over as the base networking speed.
I’m waiting for a switch that is part sfp+ and part RJ45 10g. Part of my network is sfp+ and the other is RJ45 10gb and I want way to put them together without having to use an adapter that gets so hot that I can could dinner on. How about a 10gb flex switch with an sfp+ connection on it instead a a 1gb connection?
Seems to have some layer 3 features though it doesn’t appear to have any real routing present. But for $399, it’ll work, was just looking for a new 16 port last night and want some layer 3 on it.
Decent specs but I'm not a fan of that form factor. It's like a hybrid trying to be out on the desk/wall and also the rack. A typical hybrid where it doesn't do either job very well. I guess for $399 one can't complain too much. Also strange to have a PRO machine without DC Power Backup possibility, especially when POE++ devices usually are important. Rack mounting is definitely secondary on this guy.
external psu = no go not full with = no go only 4x 2,5g = no go heck the 8port enterprise is better then with 8x 2,5g ports... 1g ports are a dime a dozen and can be added for like 20 bucks...
Great videos and confirmed my decision to get the UDR (Pill Shape) for my home. I have a home setup where I want to have the 16 ports, but curious if you can turn off/on individual ports like on the UDR? For example, have 5 POE ports and configure the other ports as data only. This is more an effort to centralise hardware and have a flexible configuration.
The 1st of April was long gone when this was recorded, guess Ubiquiti missed the memo. Would have preferred to see PoE++ in conjunction with port speeds that can actually support WiFi 7's real world bandwidth. Time for Ubiquiti to start getting ahead of the curve for a change. This is almost a step backwards. Just as the U7 Pro is nowhere near the caliber of a "Pro" AP. Just called it the "Pro" to charge more money. Wasting time and resources currently on this switch is comical.
I currently use all Netgear Insight switches .. I was considering make the switch to Ubiquiti and specifically this switch, as I am having some issues with my fiber uplinks .. because of the complexity of my install and the lack of resources with the ability to assist .. will these switches reach out to me with issues (internet down, connected neighbor down ... etc ...) .. Thank you for the video, I am planning to order a pair of these if the Ubiquiti management is equal or better than insight.
Thanks for sharing the info on the switch! Is the BOM cost of a 2.5 GBe ports really so high they have to keep skimping on 2.5GBe ports? I would be far more interested in the switch if it was a full 2.5GBe switch (or better yet, lets all just get to 10Gbe instead of these middle jumps xD)
I really like this switch with 4 2.5GB ports. Also the option with and without POE is great. This Nightrider Effect costs money and I think in 95% isn’t used. The 50 bugs for the Rackmount is much to high in my opinion. I think, I will buy one because of the in my opinion good home usability with the port combination. But I would like to not pay for this light games and to high priced rack mount. … and I like your videos 👍🏻
How hot does it get without a fan? Does it have a temperature sensor? Can you stack it? The enterprise 8 has got an active fan and also gets very hot. How is the temperate here without fan?
I wish all 16 ports were 2.5 Gbe. I understand power constraints they can’t all be PoE++, that’s ok, but 2.5 should be every port. If it was I would really like to get this switch. I don’t have enough ports for 24 at home but 16 is perfect with SFP’s to my vm box that runs other stuff.
How would that enable better use of rack space? People have been clamouring for companies to stop putting the ports in two rows and use a single line instead. That way ports line up better with patch panels.

To me this would only start to make sense if there is a POE powererd 2.5 switch down stream nd i dont think that exists, yet anyhow. Why else would you need POE++ and 2.5 on the same port. To me it would make more sense to have the POE++ on the one gigabit side.
This is exactly switch I need. Enough ports for me and PoE++ for USW Flex.
I'm building a house and looking into this switch. Like others have said, I really wish this had more 2.5G ports. I'll have several devices that will be in need of a 2.5G port like my desktop, NAS, and 2 AP. Would have made sense to just split it down the middle. That would have been perfect IMO.
A better featured 16 port switch was always an interesting product hole in their lineup. It’s good they fixed it.
Why do they keep shorting 2.5 interfaces?
Because this is probably the backbone for 12 cameras and a 2.5 for dvr and 2.5 for uplink, and two spare 2.5’s
Looks great, just about perfect for my needs. Power supply will be easy to replace in the 1u configuration if it fails. Now hoping they release 16 and 8 port 10g switches
I like the form factor and its flexibility in mounting, I can think of a lot of use cases for this.
finally something with 2.5gbps, poe++ and sfp+ in "ok ish" pricerange! really wish psu would be included and normal 1U form factor, but still very nice!
@@williamp6800 the plan is to eventually have more sfp+ devices (ms01 or something similar) and give it fast access to the truenas server)
This fits exactly what i need, only have two things 2.5g and can use others for u7 APs
2 things... for now ;-)
Would much rather the PSU on chassis, whether rack or wall mount.
Totally just ordered some Ultra's yesterday for my I-don't-want-a-rack home setup and now have to see if I can switch them out for this.
Needs at least 8 2.5gbe ports and should have the rack mount bracket included
This is the one I want for my own home network ... $399US (current price on UI Store) is AUD$602 ... but I bet the bloody thing is closer to $1000 by the time I get my hands on it ...
This is only saved by that rack kit having a spot for the brick however the extra cost id rather get more ports that are unused
Nice ! I want the same form factor Switch with 16 10Gbe ports ! :-)
I’m waiting for a switch that is part sfp+ and part RJ45 10g. Part of my network is sfp+ and the other is RJ45 10gb and I want way to put them together without having to use an adapter that gets so hot that I can could dinner on. How about a 10gb flex switch with an sfp+ connection on it instead a a 1gb connection?
well would only need 1 adapter to hook the sfp+ up with their 10g rj45 one... just don't lick the adapter but 1 isn't an issue at all
Seems to have some layer 3 features though it doesn’t appear to have any real routing present.
The fact that it is an optionally rack mountable and within a PRO line but without a DC power backup doesn't make any sense for me
Finally they hit the Jackpot with this one!! Its Perfect in every aspect even the Price!!
This is far from perfect lol
external psu = no go
not full with = no go
only 4x 2,5g = no go
heck the 8port enterprise is better then with 8x 2,5g ports... 1g ports are a dime a dozen and can be added for like 20 bucks...
The external brick appears to be much smaller for the non-POE version. Unfortunate that I can’t find the 16 Pro Max non-POE version on Amazon.
This is exactly what I have been looking for! Just ordered mine!
Definitely going to buy this one
I wish there is a desktop version of UDM Pro/ SE ( maybe called it UDM Air / Air SE ) just like this size to fit -in apartment space.
I agree because you would may consider then just to buy the 24 pro max as I never have enough ports and it comes with 8 x 2.5gb
might as well just buy the 24 port not much difference in price when adding the rack ears...
When are you going to take a look at the UXG Max?
This just changed the landscape of under-the-desk switches for everyone, especially if you have a Unifi ecosystem!
I'd love to see a Dream Machine in this form factor tbh. No HDD and external PSU, something that would sit between UDM Pro and UCG Ultra.
How hot does it get without a fan? Does it have a temperature sensor? Can you stack it? The enterprise 8 has got an active fan and also gets very hot. How is the temperate here without fan?
And what on earth is that external PSU all about!??? Madness!
I would have preferred, at the cost of extra depth, to have the RJ45s sockets in two rows to enable better use of rack space.
How would that enable better use of rack space?
People have been clamouring for companies to stop putting the ports in two rows and use a single line instead. That way ports line up better with patch panels.
love it, I'm a bit of a newbie to this I have a dream machine pro , would I need to get a 2.5g sfp adapter for the dmp then cable from there to the 2.5gb switch . I am looking at a 2.5g asustor nas and have 2 APs that require poe so this looks great . Also sorry for noob question i have 1000 mb internet via fibre would that benefit from a 2.5 wan spf adapter for internet in also
Nice update for those of us the have small system in our homes to expand
Can you turn of Etherlight and use as a normal Unifi Switch?
Yup their just won’t be any status lights as they removed the standard link and activity lights
Just bought 20 of them... ... I wonder when they turn up..
And ... in few weeks - the 8 port version (4 x 2.5 + 4 x 1Gb) ... I'll wait for that one :)
Yup, me too!
I hope that's the case! That's exactly what I would want, however, I'd be willing to bet it would still be pricey.
I just wish that they would finally release a UniFi desktop/rack switch with 4x SFP+ and 8-12 10G RJ45 (half of those being PoE+ or ++).
Indeed, I have to use a Mikrotik with the 4xSFP+ ports for my home network to interconnect with my unifi network.
@@shmayazuggot8558you don’t “have to.” I think aggregation switch is actually one of their better products. No mixing and patching different types of ports. Just eight SFP+ ports. That’s it.
I’m sure more expensive than the Microtik switch you bought, but everything Unifi is.
Would be nice if it was all 10G ports. I'll be waiting 10G minimum now with all NVMe storage. Also waiting for a 10G WiFi 7 AP.
$50 for the power supply mount. Its not included.
So they include the switch mounts but leave you to bodge the PSU mount or pay $50? Not great.
To me this would only start to make sense if there is a POE powererd 2.5 switch down stream nd i dont think that exists, yet anyhow. Why else would you need POE++ and 2.5 on the same port. To me it would make more sense to have the POE++ on the one gigabit side. To have power distribution through a 5 port POE or cameras and the like and keep the 2.5 open for faster devices like a few pcs not needing POE. Am i missing some application for having it this way?
Wonder what's the idle power usage.
Waiting for a docsis 4 modem
I like the line, I wish the Pro Max 16 could be powered by POE. That is the feature I see is missing.
Unless im missing something, hes showing these rack mounts AS IF it comes in the box. As per the website, they do not. Its an additional $50 USD to buy the rack mount add on. Thats kind of crazy.
I just don't know which market UI is targeting with all these new products.
No go for me unfortunately, 😞! Mainly because of the need to buy a rack mount adapter and does not look polished with the rack adapter.
arrgh.. just ordered yesterday the new PoE Smart Chime and would have ordered this as well and saved the £10 delivery...
I would love to see a video about the XMG1915-10EP from Zyxel as it's a bit cheaper and has more 2.5 gig ports.
Interesting power supply “pot”. Do you reckon that standard rack ears on both sides will fit the switch into a 10 inch telco rack?
In the installation guide it does look like it has standard ear mounting points as well as the proprietary mounts for the accessory kit. But it won’t fit a 10” rack as it’s 13” wide.
So it is called "Professional Max" but without DC power backup 🙃!?
But can it be managed within a IPv6-ony network?
Is it silent (under load), or is it like their 24 port hovercraft effect switches?
They should have kept the USW white aesthetic. It's a bit too non-discrete especially given the massive power brick and the short cable.
Nightrider? Or Cylon?
The mount being off center sucks. Best to just buy the 24 port version
