I didn't come by seeing this 😩 until today. These 1960's Japanese radios 📻 are a far cry 😢 from the modern Crosley (much better). Too bad the world can't go back to the good old days. Please keep these GREAT Japanese radio videos coming!! Your friend, Jeff.

Nice collection. I have about 7 of these. I bought them many years ago when i first started collecting. I do NOT have any white ones. I only bought the colored ones. My favorites are my teal one and my perry winkle blue one.

A fine example of a quality Japanese-made product, not some piece of Chinesium crap.

I like those little radios you have, never thought about collecting those, I mostly have wood radios.

And we already have 2 AM stations that play music (and a 3rd if you have a good radio and a 4th if you happen to be in the area around the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio) one of those 4 is CFZM 740 in Toronto (that's why a good radio can still pick it up in the daytime because where I live I'm in the daytime range of 740 in Toronto) the other 3 are smaller stations 2 are to the south (one can reach here in the daytime (960) and the other puts a strong signal into Canton Ohio in the daytime (1310) but there is one that is a local station and they also have an FM translator on 93.5 and that is 1590 so yes there are areas where AM stations still play music (we had another local station that did holiday weekend rewinds back when they were a top 40 station (640) but they stopped doing that (that was my station when I was growing up but they were a daytimer that went off at California sunset and their rival was 1590 which now plays music again to this very day after trying other formats that included talk but they always went back to music)

I just wish that 1590 would turn back on the AM Stereo signal because they had it when it came out so they should still have the equipment to do so (and 640 when they were doing their rewind weekends should have done the same because when they were Contemporary Christian they were also in AM Stereo and I wonder if they still have the AM Stereo equipment (I still wonder if 960 is still in AM Stereo, I would have to dig out one of my Sony SRF-42's to find out

Thank you for the schematics. I screenshot all of them, including the ones that weren't at the end of the video. They're all useable.

The design is light... yet seems well considered where it mattered. Nice fix up! ❤

This one reminds me of Allen Sherman's version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas", which he performed in the same era these radios were made. "On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me: a Japanese transistor radio!"

A note about the small oil filled caps--at their age they could contain PCB-esp on a low cost radio. They were too small to fall under the PCB regs for electrical components. So wash your hands and the area in the radio if the cap blew or leaked.

These performed better than one might expect. Many of these had a longer ferrite rod antenna for better reception

I believe dry bearing grease & dust can interfere with the metal to metal contact for the movable fin assembly.

I remember those cheaply Japanese radios from that era. You’d give one of those to family members you didn’t like or as a zonk gift. We called them turd-o- Mattics! It was very rare to get a brand new radio home from the store and have it actually work!

eBay has turned into a Five-and-Dime for cheap crap from China along with the absurdly over-priced vintage stuff. Just today I spot checked for a couple tubes. You could buy the same tubes brand NOS from the well-known tube houses for less than the eBay sellers wanted for used.

$10 in 1965 is $100 today even using the extremely conservative rates claimed by the BLS. Even in 1969, a ten spot was worth $87.73, again, using these extremely conservative rates that are claiming a much lower rate of inflation than the real one.
So these were not by any means cheap. In 1969, minimum wage was $1.60/hr A MW worker had to work 5.9 hours to buy that and even longer than that once all the taxes are removed. So probably more like 8-10 hours.
Radioshack lists a solid state AM radio in their 1969 catalog item 12-1346 for 9.99 That was probably a much better deal.
