OK, so it’s a year later, and I’d love to hear about a follow up on your thoughts of this radio. Although I’m not a drone racer (but I’ve thought about getting into drones latwr), I AM a car racer who is about to get back into the hobby. Would you say that the Surface version of this radio (the DX6R) is worth checking out based on your experience with the iX12?
I think what people need to bear in mind is this is a fairly new tech for Mini Quads (Android on TX) the idea is amazing and the more we promote and feedback I can see Android TX’s being the future standard 👍🏼
My only problem with spektrum is that I feel like it's way overpriced. The ix12 is $600-$700 compared to $250 for a x9d plus SE. Has spektrum added enough value to warrant the $350 price difference?
Mark Evans I've been in RC for 30+ years and overpriced is still overpriced. Nowadays frsky is a proven reliable option. It's like the legacy brands just ignore that and expect their customers to continue to pay a premium for something that in my opinion doesn't warrant the high price tag. I wouldn't pay $3000 for a 40inch flat screen tv today just because that's what they used to cost. I still have some old futaba, airtronics, and even some first generation spektrum transmitters. While I have paid the premiums that were basically required to get into the air in years past I still find the latest generation of spektrum transmitters to be overpriced when compared to alternatives.

I have experience, I actively participate in the hobby, and l'm offering reasonable criticism of the price point.

The hall effect gimbals feel amazing, and yes I have tried Spektrum gimbals, they were not as good, you can adjust the tension of frsky gimbals so they were probably not the right tension for you, you are the only fanboy here, thinking something is better just because it's more expensive is just dumb.
Thanks for the review! I fly RC Helis and have a DX6 and a DX9 and would love to get an ix12. Now for my other radios I use a Pulse 4000mAh LiPo pack which feels to last forever at least compared to the rechargeable AA’s I used before (my DX9 was used so don’t have a charger for it so never tested the stock battery). I am wondering if that is possible on the ix12. On my radios you just remove the whole plastic enclosure and the LiPo fits right in. And the radio allows you to change what battery type you have for accurate battery level measurement. I do have to unplug it for recharging but then I use a small 50W charger and it’s ready in about 45 minutes charging at 1C. Could be done in about 25 minutes at 2C but I am ok like that. So wondering if you can take some video of that (at least the back battery slot) and probably test that battery out. Cheers!

+Drib2 Is your DX9 and iX12 backs the same mold shape? Curious to know if buying an iX12 replacement back would be a good way to convert / upgrade it. Horizon Hobby need to make a kit for the DX9
Have you tried Flysky, the Nirvana? Curious to what you think on that one, although it does require new receivers it looks like it might be pretty good

I really like that Android touch interface and I am on the fence to buy the Horus.. but if I could use the ix12 with all my frsky receivers, I think I might go spectrum.... Thoughts on the matter? Also, come fly in the twin cities!!!! Or do a kwad kamp here at the least! 👌
Taranis is far more superior. And just get a stupid cheap module for taranis like50$? And you can fly all spektrum models and many others that are on the market with the same transmitter. Edit: If you can afford Horus, why settle for something like spektrum??? It's a no brainer.
Over a year later and the answer to all the Spektum problems is still called "FrSky". $600+ for a transmitter that requires another $200+ for a Crossfire setup to avoid the "Team Fail safe" syndrome is just nuts.. I over paid for a X9D+ SE Black Edition at $280. This and a $13 XM+ receiver gets me out to 1/4+ mile of trees and such, and past 800mw video signal easily. Fail safes are something I read about (and my buddy looses his quad in the river from).. Yeah, I know. Everyone flying an $8K plane is using Spektrum.. Lol.
Is there any new improvements on the Model Switching ? Love to hear your opinion (a follow up) since you have had it for half a year now. Please make a video about it.
Nice video. Thanks. Drew, I use a Flex Innovations Aura 8 flight control system in a few of my planes. My biggest grip is not being able to adjust the Aura setup in the field while using my DX9. Because I am an iPhone guy not an Android guy I do not know if the IX12 would allow in field Aura adjustments. Flex Innovations has an application called Aura Config Tool that on my computer at home allows easy Aura adjustment. Do you happen to know if I could run the Aura Config Tool app on the IX20 and adjust the Aura in the field?

I'd like to see an equivalent on the Frsky side. I'm gonna go over that one for now, I'm just not ready to buy a bunch of spektrum receivers or switch to CRSF yet.
Hello Drib 2, I bought mine used couple days ago with TBS module but the problem I’m having is that the TBs module doesn’t go to sleep or turns of when I put the radio to sleep mode? Basically even the radio is on sleep mode, the tbs module still on, any thoughts or solution?

Gimbals are super smooth. Same as dx9. If you’re happy with DX9 I don’t think this is a necessary upgrade unless you really like cool toys. And nothing wrong with that ;) And the sticker come with Drib Hypetrains 😁

Drew, How "Future Proof" is th ix12. also can you do a video on how to change vtx channels, pid settings, ect. A comparison to frsky open tx abilities.

Drew, great vid! I have the Dx12 and the battery issue was driving nuts. Doing upgrade today! It’s the best radio on the market particularly if you fly multi aircraft. I fly Heli’s and planks and love the gimbals, setup options and overall functionality. I have been flying FPV for 4 months and thinking of getting crossfire for it. Would be awesome if you did a vid on setting up crossfire on DX12. Keep up the great work!
Hello I have Spektrum IX12 and drona Blade vortex 150. I have an IX12 installed speedybee app. But I do not, the transmitter tells me that I do not have an otg cable. So when I try to put a PC mouse or something else instead, the transmitter responds to them.
Hey Drew. Since you travel so much, you could do a video on this channel. Maybe show how you pack/props on or off/and what to expect from security. I have traveled with mine but it's still a point of concern everytime I travel
My ix12 decided not power on today help. After update ix12 app firmware it's dead no power on on lcd, but the orange above power button flashing 2 time and repeat flash like that.
Mark Evans I dont have a taranis, my crossfire is on my dx8 at the moment (externally powered). The main reason i asked is i know the ix12 uses a 1 cell battery and the crossfire tx uses 2 to 3 cell power. Wasnt sure how that would work if at all
I had the ix12 for about 6 months and have had nothing but problems. I switched over to taranis x7, best decision I made. plus you had to wait too long to switch quads and boot up.
Cool away from my radio at the moment it’s in Saudi and I am in Uk. Notice you got the TBS attached I have my crossfire unit cable ready to set up with my next build. So I would be super great full if you would do a Crossfire config, as I would like to be able to run my crossfire on just one build. So I guess what I would like to know is how to switch between TBS and normal RX while flying different setups. Scraggy.
Thank you for this very informative video. The radio is getting more and more interesting for me. I have a DX9 and i love it. With a 4000 mah LiPo in by DX9 i charge about once every 2-3 month. Its fast and easy to use.
Like 2 min is a big deal l it would be fine if it took 4 min for me anyways. I shut mine off inbetween flights and it does not bother me at all to turn it on it takes ame more than 2 min to get the plane ready anyways lol usually it takes about 5 min to get the plane/drone ready. So I turn it on get the plane ready and the remote is ready by the time im done
I am glad it fixed yours but it made mine worse. After watching this I went and did the update from the play store and now my Andriod settings say the battery is 86% but Airware says 55%. I have had mine for 2 months and I hate it more every day. Waste of $600. I love Spektrum and have flown helis with Spektrum for many years but this radio truly sucks for all of the important stuff. It's great to have keyboard for setup etc but really how often do you do that? It sucks.
love mine! gotta go home and update it... wish there was an app we can use to tune mp3 files for voice functions... mostly just volume.... the google voice and beeper is loud but would like my mp3s files to be just as loud.
In addition to the software glitches, I think Spektrum could have used a faster processor in the iX12. A faster processor would alleviate the slow speeds. Thank u for the video. Good job!

Given that for the price of this thing you can get 2 TX16s with TBS module, 4 in 1 module etc, Its miracle people actually try to defend these products... I ve been longtime spektrum user, but Im totally over them now.
i noticed in one of your other vidios that you have a qx7 hanging on one of the walls........ if you put hall efect gimbals on it it would be just as good as the ix12
The IX12 is better but its also more expensive. If you have the money and if you like the special features of the IX12 than its better. But if these Features arent as important and you would have a better battery life and you have less money for this than buy the DX9: DX9 Pros: Less Expensive (half as Much) Better Batterylife IX12 Pros: More Channels Touch Screen Display with Android and many other smart features

I love my ix12, not issue with battery. Just turn on the radio before you get your quad ready while that ix12 is ready. Only downside is the crossfire adapter has beeing back order since day janary.

John Doe its not colored, its a trait passed to offspring of mothers that used the now banned beta-hexifluride sulfide in their makeup like eyeliner and hair dyes. Most of the time it just discolors the skin green or red but sometimes it strong enough to effect the hair follicles and create green and red strands of hair.
Having had three spektrum sets fail in 13 months I won't trust spektrum again and that thing looks too ridiculous for words. I'll never need anything more than my orange tx6i which is cheap, light weight and does the job very well. For example when you switch it on its ready in about two seconds!
Dude its basically a cell phone... does your phone stay charged longer than a day? Didnt think so. And come on man 2 minutes boot up. How fast do you really need to stary a radio up to go fly? If snything it sluggish... but your issues are irrelivant.. however thanks for the bataware advice.
My dx6e change model in 5 sec 👍 but I might still buy a taranis Q X7 because every new bnf that’s come out are in frysky 😒 and why the fuck do I need to buy a dongle to fly a sim on my PC ??? The Q X7 as a usb port standard!!! 👍

@Joshua McIvor About a year ago I was about to buy one. I had it for testing to see if I'd like it. And even the guy in shop told me, that why would I want to change to ix12 if I'm possibly not going to like it. (He knows me for very long time as I'm a customer for many many years.) I had it for nearly two weeks. As Le drib says,I was surprised with the time it took to turn on. Menu navigation was bit complicated but nothing I couldn't get used to after a while. Battery was draining for no reason when off. Yes Taranis is going that way (like TBS and trappy) to protect themselves but I still don't get it. It's open TX so anyone can use it. You still have options to upgrade to access or downgrade to ACCST protocol if you wish. No limitations.-yet I guess. Plastic quality of spektrum is better. It doesn't feel cheap. Jumper will have problem to run the all models module at some stage.or just exclude the Frsky one the Frsky goes full access. Jumper is a good transmitter since I got one to test and to play with for a while too. It feels cheap but it's going the right way. It's bit thinner too. For me it has same problem: it's still took big and switches and buttons feel flimsy. But, it can run all models out of the box for what a 1/3-1/4 of the price of a ix12? Touch screen is not really important to work with transmitter (it would make things easier) but it can get damaged/break easier too. (If you don't use a case of some sort) Smudges and oil from the nitro engine helicopter is not helping . It's really down to what every pilot likes/ prefers more. To me, it has all many switches that are not used and it's just a bit annoying. Size and the antenna always in the way makes it bit awkward to store or fly with do different countries. Anyway, it's just an opinion and not ment as an insult. Stick with what works best for you. All I was looking for was One transmitter to fly all my models with (I'd have to bring several since I have different models with different receivers )and it had to be compact. So in this case Taranis X-lite does all of that for relatively low cost. Even if it breaks, it's easier just to buy a new one and it won't hurt as much. No need to get offended sir.
@Joshua McIvor I apologize for making it sound like that too. I still have spektrum and I have to agree it is way easier to setup and work on/with. Ix12 is a top range transmitter and has spec like no other. The price is the only downside. It was/is something that nobody has done before. Spektrum changed the whore RC. Thanks to spektrum, we have the digital retransmission and frequency hopping. Spektrum opened whole new world for us. I'm still using spektrum for my helicopters. I'm too used to the pinching with it and the setup is bit more complex with the beast X build in flight controller. Just too much hassle to change it over to Frsky. I had really great time over the years with it it's just recently (about a year ago) I started to feel the need to upgrade . Especially with so many different quads and receivers on them and I had to carry and charge all the extra stuff to fly. Frsky hasn't failed me -yet! (Knock knock) But I'd really like to upgrade to xfire (crossfire) for that extra safety not so much for long range . Just to be sure that I'm not going to fall out of sky when I fly behind dense trees or behind some houses sheds and so. There are certainly pluses to the full size transmitter (holds better in hands and the stick resolution is better) than the X-lite. It's the compactness and form factor (as an old gamer I kinda like the game pad style ) transmitter. It just feels natural. I'm definitely not hating on spektrum. I'd still like to give an iX12 a crack just can't afford one! For all the other functionality and sexy screen I'd sacrifice a few minutes of my time. Plus if the bootloader was ever unlocked it would open up all sorts of possibilities!

If waiting 30 seconds to change model is a problem for you, I’d like to know why you’re needing to switch models any faster

Drew, are you using an external battery for the Crossfire? If not what TX power are you able to run on?

Are you running a external battery for your crossfire? If not that's is also pulling down your battery especially if your doing long range flights.

Drew, great vid! I have the Dx12 and the battery issue was driving nuts. Doing upgrade today! It’s the best radio on the market particularly if you fly multi aircraft. I fly Heli’s and planks and love the gimbals, setup options and overall functionality. I have been flying FPV for 4 months and thinking of getting crossfire for it. Would be awesome if you did a vid on setting up crossfire on DX12. Keep up the great work!
Hello I have Spektrum IX12 and drona Blade vortex 150. I have an IX12 installed speedybee app. But I do not, the transmitter tells me that I do not have an otg cable. So when I try to put a PC mouse or something else instead, the transmitter responds to them.
Hey Drew. Since you travel so much, you could do a video on this channel. Maybe show how you pack/props on or off/and what to expect from security. I have traveled with mine but it's still a point of concern everytime I travel

My ix12 decided not power on today help. After update ix12 app firmware it's dead no power on on lcd, but the orange above power button flashing 2 time and repeat flash like that.
I had the same issue on startup time with the Weatronic radio why not use non-volatile memory and just load it once.
I'm trying to mix my flaps and elevator. I can't get my inputs to stick. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Mark Evans I dont have a taranis, my crossfire is on my dx8 at the moment (externally powered). The main reason i asked is i know the ix12 uses a 1 cell battery and the crossfire tx uses 2 to 3 cell power. Wasnt sure how that would work if at all
I had the ix12 for about 6 months and have had nothing but problems. I switched over to taranis x7, best decision I made. plus you had to wait too long to switch quads and boot up.
Drew, time for a follow up! Betaflight setup, and questions about battery drain using xfire, rssi settings etc, etc... Give it to us, we'll watch it!

Cool away from my radio at the moment it’s in Saudi and I am in Uk. Notice you got the TBS attached I have my crossfire unit cable ready to set up with my next build. So I would be super great full if you would do a Crossfire config, as I would like to be able to run my crossfire on just one build. So I guess what I would like to know is how to switch between TBS and normal RX while flying different setups. Scraggy.

Compared to other radios, the battery is bad, but compared to smartphones the battery is good

Thank you for this very informative video. The radio is getting more and more interesting for me. I have a DX9 and i love it. With a 4000 mah LiPo in by DX9 i charge about once every 2-3 month. Its fast and easy to use.

Like 2 min is a big deal l it would be fine if it took 4 min for me anyways. I shut mine off inbetween flights and it does not bother me at all to turn it on it takes ame more than 2 min to get the plane ready anyways lol usually it takes about 5 min to get the plane/drone ready. So I turn it on get the plane ready and the remote is ready by the time im done

Hi I'm in Australia I have a spectrum DX7S can I get telematry and can I upgrade my firmware
I am glad it fixed yours but it made mine worse. After watching this I went and did the update from the play store and now my Andriod settings say the battery is 86% but Airware says 55%. I have had mine for 2 months and I hate it more every day. Waste of $600. I love Spektrum and have flown helis with Spektrum for many years but this radio truly sucks for all of the important stuff. It's great to have keyboard for setup etc but really how often do you do that? It sucks.
You don't really need a touchscreen on a transmitter. If it was the same price as standard and fast. It might be worth it.
It's more the fact that it's literally an android tablet built into the transmitter, you can literally use any android app, that includes betaflight.
love mine! gotta go home and update it... wish there was an app we can use to tune mp3 files for voice functions... mostly just volume.... the google voice and beeper is loud but would like my mp3s files to be just as loud.

In addition to the software glitches, I think Spektrum could have used a faster processor in the iX12. A faster processor would alleviate the slow speeds. Thank u for the video. Good job!
Price point though. In Australia it around the 1000$ for it. A frsky is around 200-300$. I don't see the appeal

Given that for the price of this thing you can get 2 TX16s with TBS module, 4 in 1 module etc, Its miracle people actually try to defend these products... I ve been longtime spektrum user, but Im totally over them now.

how do you connect the crossfire to spektrum?
Sound prompts are poorer fidelity, & are much lower volume than my trusty DX18.
Also, the sound prompts are intermittently absent/silent.

The IX12 is better but its also more expensive. If you have the money and if you like the special features of the IX12 than its better. But if these Features arent as important and you would have a better battery life and you have less money for this than buy the DX9:

I love my ix12, not issue with battery. Just turn on the radio before you get your quad ready while that ix12 is ready.
Only downside is the crossfire adapter has beeing back order since day janary.

John Doe its not colored, its a trait passed to offspring of mothers that used the now banned beta-hexifluride sulfide in their makeup like eyeliner and hair dyes. Most of the time it just discolors the skin green or red but sometimes it strong enough to effect the hair follicles and create green and red strands of hair.
Hmm, I have to question the strategy of building an R/C Tx around an Android tablet. To me, that's a BAD idea.

I just can’t see spending 1,000$ for a transmitter like that and then 60-80$ for recievers when we can buy a 200$ tx16 and fly anything on the market.

Having had three spektrum sets fail in 13 months I won't trust spektrum again and that thing looks too ridiculous for words. I'll never need anything more than my orange tx6i which is cheap, light weight and does the job very well. For example when you switch it on its ready in about two seconds!
Dude its basically a cell phone... does your phone stay charged longer than a day? Didnt think so. And come on man 2 minutes boot up. How fast do you really need to stary a radio up to go fly? If snything it sluggish... but your issues are irrelivant.. however thanks for the bataware advice.

@Joshua McIvor About a year ago I was about to buy one. I had it for testing to see if I'd like it. And even the guy in shop told me, that why would I want to change to ix12 if I'm possibly not going to like it. (He knows me for very long time as I'm a customer for many many years.) I had it for nearly two weeks. As Le drib says,I was surprised with the time it took to turn on. Menu navigation was bit complicated but nothing I couldn't get used to after a while. Battery was draining for no reason when off. Yes Taranis is going that way (like TBS and trappy) to protect themselves but I still don't get it. It's open TX so anyone can use it. You still have options to upgrade to access or downgrade to ACCST protocol if you wish. No limitations.-yet I guess. Plastic quality of spektrum is better. It doesn't feel cheap.
Jumper will have problem to run the all models module at some stage.or just exclude the Frsky one the Frsky goes full access. Jumper is a good transmitter since I got one to test and to play with for a while too. It feels cheap but it's going the right way. It's bit thinner too. For me it has same problem: it's still took big and switches and buttons feel flimsy. But, it can run all models out of the box for what a 1/3-1/4 of the price of a ix12? Touch screen is not really important to work with transmitter (it would make things easier) but it can get damaged/break easier too. (If you don't use a case of some sort)
Smudges and oil from the nitro engine helicopter is not helping . It's really down to what every pilot likes/ prefers more. To me, it has all many switches that are not used and it's just a bit annoying. Size and the antenna always in the way makes it bit awkward to store or fly with do different countries.
Anyway, it's just an opinion and not ment as an insult. Stick with what works best for you. All I was looking for was One transmitter to fly all my models with (I'd have to bring several since I have different models with different receivers )and it had to be compact. So in this case Taranis X-lite does all of that for relatively low cost. Even if it breaks, it's easier just to buy a new one and it won't hurt as much.

@Joshua McIvor I apologize for making it sound like that too. I still have spektrum and I have to agree it is way easier to setup and work on/with. Ix12 is a top range transmitter and has spec like no other. The price is the only downside. It was/is something that nobody has done before. Spektrum changed the whore RC. Thanks to spektrum, we have the digital retransmission and frequency hopping. Spektrum opened whole new world for us. I'm still using spektrum for my helicopters. I'm too used to the pinching with it and the setup is bit more complex with the beast X build in flight controller. Just too much hassle to change it over to Frsky.
I had really great time over the years with it it's just recently (about a year ago) I started to feel the need to upgrade . Especially with so many different quads and receivers on them and I had to carry and charge all the extra stuff to fly.
Frsky hasn't failed me -yet! (Knock knock)
But I'd really like to upgrade to xfire (crossfire) for that extra safety not so much for long range . Just to be sure that I'm not going to fall out of sky when I fly behind dense trees or behind some houses sheds and so. There are certainly pluses to the full size transmitter (holds better in hands and the stick resolution is better) than the X-lite. It's the compactness and form factor (as an old gamer I kinda like the game pad style ) transmitter. It just feels natural. I'm definitely not hating on spektrum. I'd still like to give an iX12 a crack just can't afford one! For all the other functionality and sexy screen I'd sacrifice a few minutes of my time.
Plus if the bootloader was ever unlocked it would open up all sorts of possibilities!
